a_f··on Help the Graphics team track down an interesting WebRender bug
I too have seen the same issue, and I also have a GTX 1070. I also sometimes see the characters on a page suddenly not render too, or parts of the page go black like the squares they mention. I will keeping an eye out to see if I can get some repro steps.
a_f··on China building 1k-bed hospital over the weekend to treat coronavirus
Ebola too
a_f··on When will Google shut down Stadia?
Microsoft is curenlty alpha testing its xcloud service by the looks of it, which encompasses exactly that. There is also the Nvidia streaming service too.
a_f··on AI Clones Your Voice After Listening for 5 Seconds (2018)
Maybe a little less insidious than your examples, my first thought was being able to generate voice actor lines for videogames. Maybe not main characters, but background NPCs and the such. Might make the VA union a little nervous going foward though!
a_f··on The next big thing will start out looking like a toy (2010)
I guess by a bit of a leap you could see it as a pre-cursor to city-wide electric transport, such as electric scooters?
a_f··on 50 U.S. states and territories announce broad antitrust investigation of Google
Have you seen Google Image search recently? They have updated it such that when you click on an image to select/expand in view, the selection is now presented in the top right hand side of the page. But the selection is not floating with your scrolling - so selecting anything below the fold means you end up scrolling back and forth between the top of the page and your previous position. Honestly not sure why they changed it. Terrible.
a_f··on Tell HN: Thank you for not redesigning Hacker News
Thank you for this! Just installed and a quick smoke test provided a much nicer experience for me. :)
a_f··on Germany for First Time Sells 30-Year Bonds Offering Negative Yields
I too am starting to believe helicopter money could be a potential solution. Although I have to say my understanding of economics is pretty limited
a_f··on Uber Posts $5.2B Loss and Slowest Ever Growth Rate
I wonder if you could set it up such that all donations go into a pot/fund, and then have each person vote for the party they wish to receive the funds proportional to that vote.
a_f··on Reinventing Firefox for Android
Its such a nice change, I cant believe I haven't come across this yet. From what little I have used of the app it feels really nice and slick.
a_f··on Shazam-like technology used to identify bars illegally streaming soccer games
I wonder if you could steam an sports FM service through an app and add a delay equivalent to the feed you are watching?
a_f··on Mary Meeker’s 2019 internet trends report [pdf]
I agree, and having bikes stolen in the past know of the pain with this. I now have insurance for my bikes.
a_f··on Chrome extension manifest v3 proposal: comment from uBlock Origin author
I wonder now that Edge is moving to be Chromium-based that it will take, or be forced to take the same approach?

I can imagine Microsoft carving a greater slice of the browser space if they continued to support Chromium extensions whilst Chrome did not.

a_f··on Quake II RTX: Re-Engineering a Classic with Ray Tracing Effects on Vulkan
I believe the origanal proof of concept didn't do the retexturing, and just focused on the lighting; it looks fantastic: http://brechpunkt.de/q2vkpt/
a_f··on Dwarf Fortress is coming to Steam with graphics
Love Tortoise, it is my go to for Git % SVN
a_f··on DRAM Prices in ‘Freefall’
The 2200G comes with the Wraith cooler, which I believe is actually pretty good for a stock cooler. So you should be able to get away without the Coolmaster, saving some additional cash :) [Unless your prices are CPU only] Edit: You would probably need to put the savings into a PSU though!
a_f··on Major Games Publishers Are Feeling the Impact of Peaking Attention
Whilst the launch window for Titanfall 2 was pretty bad, I have a feeling that the multiplayer and longevity of the game would have suffered regardless. The skill ceiling is too high for most players, and I feel that without the casual audience the playerbase would drop off as it has even without competition from the other shooters.
a_f··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
The demo is tomorrow on Twitch and Youtube (24th Jan)
a_f··on What I learned from reading over 100 weight loss studies
I believe there is a significant risk of heart conditions arising from stimulant use.
a_f··on My Life After a Heart Attack at 38
And when you do it is important to chew it, which helps increase the speed in which it works.
a_f··on New Mac Mini
I guess you could expand it with an external SSD via the USB or thunderbolt ports? Not ideal, but a potential workaround.
a_f··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Whilst the studio is dead, there are rumors of remastered C&C(s) on the horizon from EA.
a_f··on Tell HN: Now Washington Post is asking to turn off Firefox's tracking protection
I wonder if you could create a service like Netflix or Spotify for Newspaper articles? Where the newspaper/journal get a fee for publishing through the service and the users get ad free access to the articles. This would only be successful if you could get almost all publications in though.
a_f··on Apple's Proprietary Software Locks Kill Independent Repair on New MacBook Pros
It does take some setup and tweeks; but you can create a perfectly serviceable W10 laptop without the crappy start menu and advertising. I primarily use ClassicShell (www.classicshell.net), although others exist, coupled with Spybot's antibeacon (https://www.safer-networking.org/products/spybot-anti-beacon...)
a_f··on Cable networks are speeding up TV shows to cram in ads
From my experience the US broadcasts of soccer do have a ad popover the playing game on some games; often over or in addition to the scoreboard. It is much like an animated banner that you would get on a website. It does not cover the entire screen; but it is still intrusive. Of course there is still exposure to the stadium side banners, and shirt sponsors as with all soccer games.
a_f··on An office building in Seattle that doesn't have air conditioning
Server room maybe?
a_f··on AMD Reveals Threadripper 2: Up to 32 Cores, 250W, X399 Refresh
If you are shopping for a bit of a CPU than newer models, make sure that the motherboard that fits your requirements is also available. Motherboards tend to get more expensive 2nd hand once they stop being manufactured, as opposed to CPUs.
a_f··on Amazon device recorded private conversation, sent it out to random contact
Could be a problem if you plan on sleeping, but you could some rules to get around that
a_f··on Impersonators who are paid to flirt on dating apps
I personally belive this to be the case.

I cam across an interesting article here on HN posted about the link between polygamy and upheaval in the Economist https://www.economist.com/news/christmas-specials/21732695-p... .

Whilst its not evidence, it certainly makes the case.

a_f··on Goldman Sachs questions whether curing patients is a sustainable business model
The toothbrush is meant to remove a growing living substance, namely bacteria. The shotgun cleaner is meant to removal particles.

After a period of time the toothbrush too will become a colony of bacteria. It will then add to the existing problem or at least offer no benefit. This is why you should change them so often.

The shotgun cleaner is not used to remove bacteria primarily and will not suffer the same issue provided the particles/grime can be removed from it.
