a254613e··on The Battle Inside Signal
>no one should be able to think or speak free

Who says that? People, myself included, don't want specific harmful for society groups to be allowed to speak free, not that nobody's allowed to say anything.

Yes, nazis should not be allowed to speak free. And no ramblings about privacy here on HN will ever change my mind.

In fact, I'd be happy to sacrifice my own privacy if we can root out the evil of racism, nazism, terrorism, and other things that absolutely everybody agrees are bad.

That being said, I think the frameworks used to prevent that at the moment have a lot of potential for abuse, especially from private companies. And it's something that should be improved upon, and normal people should have privacy as much as possible.

a254613e··on DDoS-Guard to forfeit internet space occupied by Parler
>but the only cases where the corresponding NIC takes action is when someone complains for content-motivated reasons

Can you name some examples of this where someone was fraudulently claiming IPs, but corresponding NICs refused to take action when provided evidence like in this case?

a254613e··on Giving More Time for Our Recent Update
What exact terms have changed that are "bullshit"? I see a lot of hate for whatsapp and statement about people switching etc, but nobody can explain what EXACTLY in this privacy policy update has changed to warrant that? From what I can tell absolutely nothing changed for the average users, only those who want to communicate with businesses - but perhaps I'm wrong.
a254613e··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
That sort of behavior is very selfish, wouldn't you agree? You expect everyone to be annoyed and go through the hassle of contacting you, when you can't even keep one app installed to communicate with all of them.

And in a lot of countries you wouldn't lose access to "some groups" but you would lose access to ALL of them, from social, to every other group.

a254613e··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
If you click on the message you get a Message Info screen which shows you exactly what the state the message is and the timestamps. It explicitly says "Sent"/"Delivered"/"Read" alongside the ticks and at what time it happened.
a254613e··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
To me that sounds perfectly reasonable, and in fact a good policy. It seems like you lost access to your company account, based on your comment, so who is "we" that lost thousands of dollars worth of project code? If it was your employer that you had the email with, why couldn't you just restore the email?

What in your opinion should github do when an employee loses access to their company email, and 2FA, because they're fired? Should the employee gain access to all the code and the account by just contacting github via their personal email?

a254613e··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
While 18 hours is what apple says, their scenario for 18 hour usage is probably very uncommon.

At least for me it is. And thus I get around 2 days battery life with a 4 year old series 2 watch.

Their official test includes "45 minutes of app use, and a 60-minute workout with music playback from Apple Watch via Bluetooth"[0] - so unless you plan on doing that you can easily expect double the battery time.

a254613e··on Apache OpenMeetings – Video chat, messaging, white board, doc editing and more
What is it about open source that it can't attract UI/UX designers to try and contribute? Are most open source projects just unwelcoming to that kind of help? Missing tools/platforms for it, or something else?

A lot of times, like in this case, I wouldn't even consider the product because of its bad UI/UX, even if the underlying technical implementation might be slightly better than the closed source alternative.

a254613e··on Spying with Your Robot Vacuum Cleaner: Eavesdropping via Lidar Sensors [pdf]
The roborock S5 and older models can easily be rooted, and you can install alternative open source firmware [0], newer models still require hardware disassembly in order to flash the firmware, so it's not quite user friendly yet [1]

For newer versions you can however extract the API token from the app, and use it to control the vacuum without internet access and block its external internet access, since the vacuum uses a known protocol. [2]

a254613e··on Show HN: Self-hosted offline Internet from your browsing history
Well, not quite.

It seems like the license went something like this:

MIT > Dual GPL/Custom license > No license > AGPL > No License/Commercial only > Custom license > Different custom license > License with a commercial pricing? > AGPL (3 days ago)

Most of this happening over the last few weeks, and the readme says it's dual licensed.

a254613e··on Show HN: Self-hosted offline Internet from your browsing history
I remember seeing this on reddit, the license changed quite a lot over the past month, with some very weird custom licenses asking you not to be a fake victim, lie, etc in the process - https://github.com/c9fe/22120/commits/master/LICENSE - how safe is it to assume that the current license will stay?

a254613e··on Amazon destroys $1.5m of sellers inventory – now homeless
That sentence is so important, yet lacking so many details.

Did he try to submit the removal order, like one day before, or way earlier? Did he try it only once? Did he communicate this to amazon? He was obviously in contact with them for a longer period, did he mention that he can't get the removal order submitted?

a254613e··on AI slays top F-16 pilot in DARPA dogfight simulation
With perhaps the exception of the training, wouldn't most of those problems (and some other ones mentioned in this thread) be something that can be solved using remote controlled, but still controlled by humans, fighter jets?

There must be a reason that I'm missing why this isn't already a thing, anyone got an idea?

a254613e··on Thank You MDN
I would absolutely not donate a single cent to Mozilla, so that their CEO can keep the 2.5 million/yr salary. Because that's what the donation would be really.

First the CEO, and other executives, get 100% of their salary (millions $ per year). And if there isn't enough money to pay the developers then the community should pay them? No way. If there isn't enough money to run the company then there isn't enough money to pay such high salaries.

a254613e··on Where Am I? NYTimes or Google?
I do, and I don't even live in 3rd world country - I live in Germany in one of the largest cities in the country.

But even if I can load both pages at roughly the same time AMP experience is just so much better, they always load at the very least at the same speed as the original website, there's no weird scrolling implemented, there's no annoying popups, etc.

I always choose AMP pages when possible, compared to the "native" ones - because I know for a fact that I'll get fast loading, and other stuff mentioned above.

FCA statement: https://www.fca.org.uk/news/news-stories/requirements-impose...

>On 26 June 2020, the FCA imposed a number of requirements on Wirecard including, that the firm:

a254613e··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
I had issues with google maps being broken for the address when I moved in. I reported it too many times to count using the website.

In the end what worked for me was registering as google maps client/customer, reproducing the issue via API, and then reporting it as an API issue. The underlaying data was fixed within a day or two, and I got my emails answered by google engineer within (literally) minutes.

a254613e··on Google Pixel Buds
Even ignoring the fact that google has the resources to pull this off easily. In countries where they already have all of that set up, because they sell other products, these issues still exist.

Selling a newer version of a product in a country where the old version is already being sold is not an issue for small companies, and it shouldn't be for google.

I have never had any issues buying Samsung, OnePlus, Apple, or any other brand devices no matter the device category.

In fact last time I wanted to buy a google device (the original pixel phone) I was on the waitlist for almost 2 months before I walked to the apple store and bought an iPhone - and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

a254613e··on Google Pixel Buds
What's up with google and their inability to:

A. Launch products, both software and hardware, worldwide (or at least majority of countries).

B. Launch products with clear dates and not just "Join a waiting list". At least in German store that's the only option.

a254613e··on Show HN: Kosmi – Hang out with friends and family online
Tried it now with a non-tech savvy person.

* Mobile version hid the chat and everything.

* It was not clear how to start video chat.

* Audio wasn't working at all, even after 10 minutes of trying to get it to work (permissions were granted). At this point I'm not sure if it's a feature or a bug.

* Half of the apps aren't available.

I'm sorry, but in the current state it is not usable for me, or anyone I know, at all. Compared to whereby, hangouts, etc I'm not sure which currently existing features it really offers that are better.

a254613e··on Twitter says an attacker used its API to match usernames to phone numbers
That's great for you, but whatsapp is de facto standard messaging app in a lot of countries. Memorizing hundred numbers, or profile pictures (assuming that everyone has one) is just not feasible.

An app (such as whatsapp) getting access to all contacts is a valid use case, even though it doesn't apply to you.

a254613e··on 23andMe lays off 100 people as DNA test sales decline
And if someone kills every memeber of your family, and they leave DNA behind, but police are not allowed to use DNA databases which WOULD find the person that commited the crime and they don't have a match otherwise (since we're already making assumptions that something will definitely happen)?

I mean this goes both ways. One thing I don't understand about this whole hate for DNA databases and matching relative's DNA on HN is... why?

Why does something that can help police catch criminals is such a bad thing? Because there are false positives? But those exist in pretty much all other investigation techniques. Cell phone positions, being seen on a surveillance camera few blocks away, having a similar car and being in the area, etc. Why is DNA so much worse?

In fact wouldn't adding more variables, such as DNA, to the existing techniques reduce the number of false positives as in "Oh yeah it's the same car, but there's 0% DNA similarity so no need to investigate further"?

Police "barging into your house with assault rifles and ballistic protection gear, and pointing guns at all members of your family" seems extremely overkill for a, let's say, 10% DNA match. And if they do really do that, then it's a problem with a police that needs to be addressed - not the DNA databases.

a254613e··on How I automate my home
I'm curious why not use home assistant, and all the integrations that come with it, and then just expose them as homekit devices if you need/want to use homekit? Seems like it would save you a lot of time and custom code.
a254613e··on German court bans Uber's ride-hailing services in Germany
Taxi companies do have apps "free now" (formerly "mytaxi") and "taxi.eu" that majority of them use. The functionality is more or less the same as with uber.

https://apps.apple.com/de/app/taxi-eu/id465315934

a254613e··on German court bans Uber's ride-hailing services in Germany
This is terrible news. Taxi drivers, at least in Munich, are just horrible. They're always unfriendly, and their driving is very aggressive, more often than not accompanied by swearing, and just overall uncomfortable. Cars also aren't as clean as the uber ones.

I avoid it at any cost, even when they're free, for example when public transportation has issues they offer free taxis to the affected passengers. I always opt out for walking, renting a bike, if it's close, or paying for an uber if it's a longer distance, rather than driving for free with the taxi.

The only advantage taxis had over uber is that there's more of them, and during some larger events such as Oktoberfest uber was always fully booked.

The regulation needs to be relaxed so that uber, and others, can compete based on their service - not some other rules and weird laws like the one mentioned in the article "that hired cars have to return to a rental firm’s main office after carrying out a ride,"

a254613e··on JetBrains: $270M revenue, 405K paying users, $0 raised
Only vacation. I think 20 is the legal minimum on full work day vacations that the company must give if you work 5 days a week. On top of that there are 14 national holidays. Normally companies in Germany give their employees 28 to 30 days, so 25 isn't that great.

Sick leave does not count towards any of those, if you're sick then you don't go to work and you still get paid - as simple as that. If you get sick while on vacation those days then count as sick leave and not vacation.

a254613e··on Amazon Ring went from a smart doorbell company to a surveillance network
I don't have the above mentioned cameras, but I do have cameras that are completely blocked from the internet.

The way I do it is: When I leave my home my home assistant will enable the FTP upload on motion detection feature of the camera. If there's motion then the camera will upload the recording to a ftp server running locally (synology), this then gets synced to google drive.

Home assistant can also do push notifications if there's movement detected.
