_v7gu··on Nuclear power saved Armenia
The comparisons with Russia and Ukraine feel really weird; wasn’t Armenia the country occupying Azerbaijani territory for about 30 years? Do we now expect Ukraine to not cut off Russia’s access to resources?
_v7gu··on The FCC wants to make robocalls that use AI-generated voices illegal
I wouldn’t call Canada that. The amount of spam calls I received there made my phone basically unusable for calls.

Whereas in a developing country I had like 2-3 ad calls/wk and now I get none in EU.

_v7gu··on Citation cartels help mathematicians-and their universities-climb the rankings
It’s not like the “principal-agent problem” already exists in the literature
_v7gu··on A confusing probability question: Red and green balls in an urn
since everyone is sharing code, why not? I feel this is a simpler way of sharing reasoning anyway. (in k; ! is iota, % is divide and +/ sums up a list)

wa:!101 / world amplitudes given we picked red (i.e relative probability)
wp:wa%+/wa / convert amplitude to probability
np:(wa-1)%99 / probability of next pick being red for each world

+/wp*np / sum the conditional probabilities
of course, if you wanted to golf this, you'd end up with {2%3}
_v7gu··on Apple's Proposed Changes Reject the Goals of the DMA
> is like having a cookie wall where pressing accept all is a single click, instead to do reject all you have to uncheck 50 checkboxes one at a time.

Which is an extremely clear violation of GDPR

_v7gu··on Meta now lets EU users unlink their Facebook, Messenger and Instagram accounts
DNT exists, and the cookie banners did not need to be regulated into existence if the websites did not strategically ignore the DNT header.
_v7gu··on Flipper Zero: Multi-Tool Device for Geeks
The last one is hilarious, just endless speculation on how the guy could have handled it better, the guy coming in with the account of how he handled thing pretty nicely, and then just crickets.
_v7gu··on Dynamic programming is not black magic
The name "Dynamic Programming" might seem out of place because it doesn't come from programming as a discipline. In this case, it actually refers to something like optimization, similar to linear programming. Dynamic programming is basically a method you can use to solve decision problems with discrete time, i.e picking the optimal sequence {a_t} in order to maximize \sum_t u_t(a_t) (plus constraints). The "dynamic programming" is defining a value function V* where V*(t) = max_{a_t}{ u_t(a_t) + V*(t-1) } which greatly reduces the dimensionality of the optimization problem.
_v7gu··on Programming Language for Ternary Computing
Godel's incompleteness theorem strikes again. At least, you can be sure that your models can be consistent.
_v7gu··on Bad scientific code beats code following "best practices" (2014)
Yes, some people read Clean Code and think every file should have less than 20 lines. I recently inherited a React project that has all single-use utility functions, graphql queries and component types extracted out to different files. Having to edit five+ files to change things in one component is a nightmare experience and slows down changes a lot.
_v7gu··on The worst kind of programmer
I think Go creates a false sense of “getting things done” by allowing too little abstraction and increasing LOC. The writing/thinking ratio is great, but most of it is having to write 4 lines of repetitive code for every reduce that should have been one line instead
_v7gu··on A programming language coding in a grid
Excel also allows for circular iteration if you allow it to. Helps with solving dynamic programming problems
_v7gu··on Code Is Not Technical Debt
Honestly, the array languages are special in a way that the shortest solutions are usually also the most generalized solutions. I’d be more afraid of javascript or Python codebases that were built to minimize loc.
_v7gu··on Code Is Not Technical Debt
That’s the kind of opportunity I’m looking for to introduce array languages to the codebase :^)
_v7gu··on Don't Use Thorium Browser – If Installed, Remove It
Any images referred here are hosted publicly and unencrypted on github. The feds would have gotten him a long time if the stuff was illegal.
_v7gu··on Don't Use Thorium Browser – If Installed, Remove It
Too much misinformation, christ. After checking another thread, it appears the browser contains a softcore furry image, and the alleged CP is the anti-circumcision propaganda images the guy hosts on his public github.io page.

Furry easter egg removal commit is here:

https://github.com/Alex313031/thorium/commit/9947421f1480bd1...

And these are the alleged edits on the github.io page:

> the site for thorium at one point had a documentary about circumcision on it, alongside furry porn and other weird political stuff, when he was called out on it, it magically disappeared.

_v7gu··on FCC votes to ban termination fees for cable and satellite services
The economics doesn’t fully allow for that, due to both visibility and time preferences
_v7gu··on Beeper Mini is back
God I miss F-droid, hope EU makes apple allow them in soon
_v7gu··on 23andMe updates their TOS to force binding arbitration
How about a "continental law" solution? Usually you can't give up rights you do not have yet, so you can't sign a binding arbitrage clause if you haven't been wronged yet. This is in addition to TOS'es being restricted heavily by laws that define the limits of general terms and conditions (generally contracts that are offered to a large amount of people) and the existence of consumer arbitration committees that make it really simple for consumers to go after firms.
_v7gu··on Why we’re dropping Basecamp
Posting discriminatory comments in support of fighting against discrimination, oh the irony
_v7gu··on Show HN: YouTube banned adblockers so I built an extension to skip their ads
Sponsorblock is quite literally an ad blocker, and thus not allowed on YouTube
_v7gu··on Bhutan declares its entire street dog population fully sterilized and vaccinated
They already do? If you see a dog that has their ear marked, it means the dog has been sterilized by the municipality. If you want to help, you can take ant stray dog to a vet and they will sterilize the dog for free.

The real problem is the “people” who attack the dogs for no reason and teach them to be violent. Dogs are very social animals and they learn to respond to the society they are in. Where I live the biggest problem we have with stray dogs is we feel sorry for some of them being obese.

_v7gu··on Bluesky migrates to single-tenant SQLite
piracy websites were using base64 encoding for this purpose a while ago, but now it seems they moved on to a proprietary algorithm
_v7gu··on YouTube's plan backfires, people are installing better ad blockers
0$ to 10$ is an infinity percent increase in price, while 14$ to 16$ is not that much.
_v7gu··on Grist is a modern, relational spreadsheet
You might want to look into calculated columns
_v7gu··on App::Rak – 21st century grep / find / ack / ag / rg on steroids
APL is one of the least complex languages I know (simplest being Lisp); there isn’t much syntax to learn and the language doesn’t really have implicit footguns. You just string together function applications and modify some of those functions with adverbs
_v7gu··on Why doctors in America earn so much
I'd say that the law of one price applies here. Doctors need to be making this much to compensate for living in debt their whole youth and early adulthood. Also having money is probably more enjoyable when you're younger.
_v7gu··on How to find a lost phone in a no-cell-coverage camping site?
The implementation seems reasonable, but how are the private keys shared between devices? It should pass through Apple some time since a phone can decrypt a laptop’s location. Or do they use bluetooth whenever near?
_v7gu··on Nix Survival Mode: macOS upgrades won't break Nix anymore
The main advantage for me is that Nix will not run a system-wide upgrade command (that takes quite a while to execute) by default while running a simple install command, causing breakages all over the place
_v7gu··on How to find a lost phone in a no-cell-coverage camping site?
They have leveraged their userbase into an (admittedly very useful) spy network
