_underfl0w_··on Undocumented arm64 ISA extension present on the Apple M1
> By not making it available to datacenters, they are supporting other CPU vendors in the race to catch up.

This is by far the most charitable characterization of this monetization scheme I've seen so far. Some would argue this is actually in place to ensure that purchases go directly through Apple each time (i.e. a one-to-one of customers to hardware purchases), rather than through a cloud provider who may purchase hardware once and allow thousands of customers to access it. c.f. Apple's restrictions on subletting use for no less than a single day per "machine".

Occasionally AMZN will send out questions others have asked about products to you in the form of an email if you have previously purchased the same product. Some people mistake those for questions directly asked to them instead of realizing where their answer will be posted. StackOverflow doesn't do that AFAIK.

This is also a fantastic way to do the opposite - bring a book/reader/tablet/phone (and maybe a fruit or snack) and power through some learning materials.

I haven't been able to get PS running in Wine since the 2017 CC release (and that required some hackery).

Are you aware of a way to get recent releases working aside from QEMU or KVM?

_underfl0w_··on Things You're Allowed to Do
Strangely I found when owning a smallish truck in college, strangers would apparently decide to use my truck bed as a trash bin for their various drink cans. Very strange and annoying. Random beer and energy drink cans would fly out on the highway. People just have too many cans, I guess. Maybe it's just us southern states.

If the driver in front of you loses a piece of trash from their truck bed, consider it may not even be theirs!

If only they had the equivalent of `git diff`.

Side note, who mandates these time constraints? Why are seemingly arbitrary deadlines applied? If a bill can stand on its own, why rush it at all unless you intend to enable surreptitious changes that will hopefully be missed?

Many laws have been written appearing to be one thing, while being enforced for another purpose entirely.

Some commenters may be concerned more with potential for abuses justified under law, rather than the specific use case the law appears to have in mind.

> 2. The military by nature is much much less likely to turn against the citizenry.

While comforting, is this actually true?

We have seen this happen very recently with protests occurring - yes the police were there and heavily armed, but so was the actual military, who came swiftly to the president's beckoning.

It's an organization that prioritizes rank, the chain of command, and doing what you're told without question or hesitation. There even seems to be quite a lot of perks (think education, monetary reparations) to getting your hands dirty so that elected officials don't have to.

Ah that seems so obvious now that you mention it - a sort of "thin client" model - but I was genuinely confused finding an X11 binary on a company AS400 the other day. Granted, that machine is older than I am. At least that binary makes sense now.

This article is from a personal blog on a website with a URL $someguysname.ninja.

Maybe you should be the one to write the article you seek! Believe in yourself. If you find yourself with steadfast values that you find tedious to repeatedly communicate, but that you thinks others ought to know about, why not write them down? Who knows - if it's good and resonates with others, is sounds advice, etc. one day it may end up on HN too.

Therein lies the problem, frankly.
_underfl0w_··on Apple targets car production by 2024, eyes ‘next level’ battery tech: sources
> Apple isn't known for being a machine learning company, I'm sure the car will be very pretty but they're kidding themselves

Remember the first versions of Apple Maps compared to the (relative) incumbent's? It felt incredibly half-baked and received user/media feedback accordingly.

I can already see this happening with cars with the same response - "Well... building a [map/car/ml system] is hard..."

_underfl0w_··on Apple targets car production by 2024, eyes ‘next level’ battery tech: sources
The implication is pretty overt, no? Asking OP to explain almost seems deliberately obtuse.

You mentioned, in a decidedly technical forum, that a superior at work made a somewhat questionable tech-related decision by owning a car with dashboard software by a company whose software is commonly joked to crash frequently and be less-than-reliable. I'm sure it was purely in lighthearted jest, but not exactly subtle given context. I'm sure your boss was/is a nice person.

_underfl0w_··on Introducing the Open Library Explorer
I'm sure a simple algorithm could fake book spines based on the dominant colors in the cover. Could maybe even train a ML model if you want to really over-engineer it.

e.g. how the Android app "Blackplayer" colors the music player UI based on the album cover.

I think key is that both generals have already agreed on a predetermined "meaning" of each coin flip outcome, rather than having to communicate it on a different, slower medium after the coin has been flipped.

So really it just front-loads that portion (I.e. removes it from consideration as part of the proposed solution) instead of allowing it to slow down solving the overall problem. It requires precomputation/agreement beforehand, rather than during the time allotted to the problem.

The speed of that precomputation would still be unchanged, and still be the slowest portion.

_underfl0w_··on Physicists Create Time-Reversed Waves of Optical Light
I do the same, but am just now realizing it after reading your comment. My hypothetical future also seems to be missing a certain massive surveillance machine, now that you mention it. Is there a phrase akin to "rose-colored glasses" but for the future?
_underfl0w_··on Physicists Create Time-Reversed Waves of Optical Light
Not a physicist, but this might not work quite the same since light is both a particle and a wave, whereas sound is just a pressure wave on a given medium. Would happily be proven wrong though!

Seems like the cancelation happening in your scenario would likely be from a delay of half the period of the sound waves, effectively making them roughly "complementary" or "inverse". Can't say I'm familiar with the research, though.

On a sillier note, have you heard of the Speech Jammer? [0]

It's a device to disrupt a person's speech by playing it back to them with a delay of a few milliseconds. Hilarious results. Also easily reproducible at home if you're bored.

> It is almost impossible to wear a $550 device on your ears and not become immediately biased

Not saying I disagree about confirmation bias at play - especially given that TFA states at the beginning that they received a pair for review purposes - however I've personally become upset by dropping large amounts of cash on lackluster products before. Not everyone is necessarily susceptible. Some might ask for their money back. In this case, the author didn't even pay the $550 though.

_underfl0w_··on My Son Was Killed Because I’m a Federal Judge
Oh wow, this is a very isolated take, seemingly based solely off on snippet from TFA. I initially thought the same because I was genuinely surprised women couldn't already register, but a quick internet search of the assailant's name gave me whiplash. If outspoken misogyny isn't your bag, you may want to look into him further before getting behind him.
_underfl0w_··on My Son Was Killed Because I’m a Federal Judge
An aggregator of stories on a given topic can make anything seem to happen frequently. This would, by design, ignore any stories that don't fit the narrative. It may be a good source for stories on that exact topic, but is by no means an accurate indicator of frequency, especially as a sole source.

Friendly tip (in case that wasn't autocorrect in action) - "prey" is someone/something that is hunted, "pray" is what people do to talk to their favorite immortal deity or what-have-you.
