_underfl0w_··on FIDO2 security key company releases hardware that's open source and uses Rust
The hardware is open-source, you can theoretically update the firmware so you're not vulnerable if a researcher finds a bug after your purchase, there's currently no support for getting it to act as a keyboard and type the password for you AFAICT, to name a few.
_underfl0w_··on Multiple Beverly Hills PD officers now weaponizing copyright against streaming
No the exact thing you're after, but you may be interested in Spleeter[0] which can pick out individual instruments from a given track with surprising accuracy. Deezer uses it to aid in song recognition. In this case, you could theoretically pick out the whole track and leave everything else or something.

This is kinda both hilarious and helpful. Thanks for sharing.
_underfl0w_··on LinkedIn’s Alternate Universe
Survival of the fittest != survival of the friendliest.

If it takes a lack of empathy to get ahead, those without empathy will be ahead where possible. Won't win you many friends, but why fraternize when you can delegate and enjoy the credit?

Or you can get it from the official source [0] and not some PDF on a file sharing site linked from an HN comment.

I've also personally never understood the slash syntax. Since one word requires the "s" and the other doesn't, shouldn't we use parentheses like when words may or may not be plural? e.g. "(s)he" like you might say "socket(s)" or "Unix(es)"?

Moot point if it doesn't solve the issue of it still being binary, I guess.

_underfl0w_··on Creeping as a Service
There used to be a service - IIRC called "please rob me" - that tracked users' movements based on geotags in EXIF data posted to social media. Pretty scary, and actually implemented. Most sites weren't stripping EXIF data at the time, so if somebody posted a photo 5min ago you could get latitude/longitude by just examining the file. If the coords wasn't the person's home address, you'd know they were away and open to being robbed.

FWIW the U.S. equivalent is "banana hammock".

Didn't downvote so can't be 100% certain, but it may be related to the fact that this isn't Reddit.
_underfl0w_··on The divide between political parties is smaller than we think (2020)
Unfortunately this would effectively pin down a candidate to their word and past promises they may have made - most politicians seem to avoid doing that when possible ;)
_underfl0w_··on The divide between political parties is smaller than we think (2020)
Unfortunately there is a non-negligible percentage of those who would follow the parent comment's suggestion due to religious affiliation. Some of those would also clutch pearls when mentioning birth control, out of prolonged exposure to FUD on the topic, i.e. "think of the children!"
_underfl0w_··on The divide between political parties is smaller than we think (2020)
Attempting to impeach someone based on their actions != falsely claiming election fraud in the face of evidencd (and attempting to coerce others e.g. Pence into doing so)
_underfl0w_··on Cargo Cult Software Engineering (2000)
This solution has potential to permanently remove the overhead introduced by "marriage".
_underfl0w_··on Software Development Outsourcing: Our Story
Yeah this succinctly typifies the extreme degree of self-blindness in the whole article.

Do those reasons still exist in 2021? What are/were some of them? (Genuinely curious, not playing devil's advocate)
_underfl0w_··on How to Turn an IKEA Coffee Table into a DIY Server Rack
Installation advice from TFA:

> If you mount the first item, it is recommended to install it against the table top for good fit. This happens automatically if you have the LackRack upside down, except in zero gravity environments.

_underfl0w_··on Disorderfs: FUSE-based filesystem that introduces non-determinism into metadata
> a bug depending on non-determinism can be subtle.

That's the point - to uncover bugs dependent on nondeterminism by using a filesystem that introduces it. This is for fuzz testing at the filesystem level, not literally reproducing the builds correctly multiple times.

From the linked README:

"This is useful for detecting non-determinism in the build process."

Still waiting for the clarification. You nailed the denunciation, though.
_underfl0w_··on IKEA buys 11,000 acres of U.S. forest to keep it from being developed
I can also confirm it was Pottery Barn.
_underfl0w_··on FBI agents track cell phones that pinged near the Capitol
I recall (likely pre-covid) seeing a story posted here of some unsuspecting schmuck who became a suspect in a crime because his smart watch showed him circling near the area on his usual bike route.

Scary times.

_underfl0w_··on Please don't say just hello in chat (2013)
Interesting! I and several on my team feel the opposite. This extended remote work has been a breathe of fresh air - no longer so burdened by unnecessary social conventions like small talk, except at predetermined times such as "virtual happy hour".
_underfl0w_··on Please don't say just hello in chat (2013)
The emoji symbols seem like a good idea, but unfortunately just because its the first time you've communicated with a person for the day, doesn't mean that they _aren't_ incredibly busy.

We may have different work cultures, but I used to report to someone who would lead with a bare "Hey!" and I eventually found that if I waited long enough she would either elaborate or the issue would go away. Somehow I don't think that was her actual plan.

_underfl0w_··on Please don't say just hello in chat (2013)
I think you are legitimately on to something. I may actually build that this week if I get some downtime.

It would need to be _polite_ though since most people who do this do seem to be generally well-meaning, if unwittingly annoying.

_underfl0w_··on Please don't say just hello in chat (2013)
Could you please name at least one that would warrant a "naked greeting" like that though?

"Production issue" comes to mind, but that would just as likely warrant a quick summary of the situation, since waiting for a response to "hi" wastes even more time.

_underfl0w_··on Why cats are crazy for catnip
Complacency is a huge downside. I'm also much less motivated to work on side projects.

Not to mention the toll on the lungs. Ask Willie Nelson if you'd like anecdata about how that can play out over a lifetime.

I've recently made the leap to edibles exclusively after a stint with a hot-air vaporizer (a la Volcano devices) and I now find the resin smell of smoking incredibly off-putting. The coughing, hacking, and lung stiffness that results from a bong rip even more so.

Doesn't lessen the complacency, but the delay your metabolism introduces can help you get started on projects before it sets in!

_underfl0w_··on What You Should Know Before Leaking a Zoom Meeting
This was on the front page of HN earlier this week, wasn't it? It's beginning to feel like an echo chamber in here sometimes...
_underfl0w_··on Parler’s de-platforming shows the exceptional power of cloud providers
> The founding fathers(FF)

Nitpick: why define a new acronym that you only use once? Just remove the acronym definition and change the single instance to the full word.

Also, comparing BLM to QAnon is an... odd choice.

Maybe that'll also be the Year of the Linux desktop I keep hearing so much about.
_underfl0w_··on GPT-Neo – Building a GPT-3-sized model, open source and free
Right, it's definitely goof that you cited it being fake, but I think the parent was pointing out the subtle (and likely unintentional) irony of discussing fake news while providing _fake_ numbers to support your opinion.
