_trampeltier··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
+1 from me for relais technique. It is easy to replace, even in 1000 years. Today PLCs are great and fun. We can do a lot of cool things with them. Just with the short and shorter life cycles, sometimes even less than 10 years. If something breaks you have to replace so much stuff for a small broken piece. Thats such a bummer in todays industrie automation.
_trampeltier··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
Siemens Field PG. It is a rugged Notebook for PLC programmers. At least in the last version until last year, the "Field PG M6" was possible to buy the Notebook with a special serial port for old S5 PLCs ant the Step5 software came in a special DosBox version with it.

The Field PG has also another special port called "MPI/Profibus" for S7 PLCs, 2 Ethernet ports and a DVD drive.

_trampeltier··on I don't want the details
I think you did not read that part.

> The SVP wasn't interested in understanding how the issue happened or who was involved. They didn't want to be convinced that everyone involved behaved reasonably. That's a baseline expectation.

Their question became:

“Given that reasonable people produced this outcome, what needs to change?”

Of course you have to know the problem, but he trust and excpect a sulution from them. So this does just work this way, if you can trust the people. If not, then the top person has to check the solution for himself.

As an european guy. Interesting to see things happen from far away. Knowing that crazy country has so much power, makes the near future of the whole world even more scary.

"Free", until mid 90s I guess most people bought Linux distros on CDs, later DVD (no downloads). For me the big, big plus on Linux (vs. Dos / Windows), had been all the free compilers.

I just have Fujitsu Lifebooks at Home since 2007. I think they are good, came with a bloat free Windows. I bought even one for my Mom over 10 years ago. I just changed once the HDD with a SSD. Now all my Lifebook run with Linux just flawless.

_trampeltier··on Beware the Permanent Periphery
Thats why people wrote books like ..

The End of History and the Last Man is a book of political philosophy written in 1992 by American political scientist Francis Fukuyama which argues that with the ascendancy of Western liberal democracy—which occurred after the Cold War (1945–1991) and the dissolution of the Soviet Union (1991)—humanity has reached "not just ... the passing of a particular period of post-war history, but the end of history as such: That is, the end-point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government."

_trampeltier··on Probabilistic Estimation for Localizing a Radioactive Source in an Urban Setting
At least in Europe, there are a lot.

There is even a public realtime map.[1]

Also at least in Switzerland, all old metal scrap companys, waste incineration plant, and so on, have radiactive detectors on the entrance.

[Edit] It seems since April 2026, Switzerland has also a lot radioactive checks in border/customs control and bigger post/packet centres.

_trampeltier··on What Happened to HackerOne?
That was not my point. Money with bancs also not, if it would be so easy, there would be no problems with nigerian oncles and so on. Good look get your grandmas scammed money back.
_trampeltier··on What Happened to HackerOne?
You got downvoted, but sadly we have 2026 and it's still not easy to send money to any bank in the world. You can say a lot of bad things about the crypto world, but thats a problem Bitcoin solved two decades ago.

_trampeltier··on Meta Ran Ads That Contained AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Imagery
Yes but, the US is also kind of special. There are absolute no rules for people like Elon and Donald. The can break all laws, all day long in front of everybody and nothing does happen. They just get richer and richer. The small guy goes in jail for something like just walk over the street on the wrong place.
_trampeltier··on What happens if you put work into the second dimension?
In the mid 90s and early 2000, all Linuxes had virtual Desktops.
_trampeltier··on Meta Ran Ads That Contained AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Imagery
In most western countrys, is often more than 50% from CSAM from underaged teenagers, like selfies etc. And then are cases like some overmotivated parents post nude baby pictures. I guess such pictures also get flaged. But even if its just 50%, 18 million, your point still standes. Why are not more people in jail.

Tesla is kind the same. Everybody bought it, because it went up so much, less because of the product. I guess every AI would do the same.

Latency for interaction with AI? For something the user use browsers and electron apps. A ping goes around the whole world before your pressed key is visible on the screen.
