_red··on Vaccine experts: Covid-19 booster shots aren't needed now
How about the reverse!

If you're a 8 year old male, you get the shot and die of myocarditis, but the 82 yr old overweight cancer patient gets an extra 4 months!!! YAY!

_red··on My startup has an unofficial hiring policy based on race. Is this normal/legal?
>but you'd very much like it to, I can tell.

What race am I?

If you had to choose a heart surgeon, would you do so based on their skill or on their skin color?

>I think any tech company would be better off with more women and nonwhite people

Why?

Do you have a source for your claim?

_red··on Invisible Ink Could Reveal Whether Kids Have Been Vaccinated
Probably D-DIMER test would be good too...
_red··on Amazon likely front-runner for multiyear NFL Sunday Ticket deal
Seems like a bad time to invest in NFL. Its a dying sport.
_red··on Jay Leiderman has died
>But if he wants to do that that's his choice I guess

Well...was his choice. The effects of that choice are now a matter for autopsy.

_red··on WhatsApp will finally let users encrypt their chat backups in the cloud
Translation: The centralized decryption backdoor is functional.
_red··on Jay Leiderman has died
So go ahead and take 5 of them?
_red··on Jay Leiderman has died
Is it really that strange? His reported death fits the current concern...

_red··on El Salvador’s new Bitcoin wallets could cost Western Union $400M a year
Jack Mallers strike.me app is the way forward.

I predict lots of these legacy money transfer services will adapt Jacks model (ie. use Bitcoin network / LN and just worry about controlling the end-points).

This is somewhat analogous to how originally we used PTSN copper-lines to host DSL signals to connect to internet...then eventually we inverted it and artificial "dial-tones" were played over native digital lines.

_red··on Spread of Delta variant driven by both immune escape and increased infectivity
If thats true why the boosters? Or are you claiming the boosters have been upgraded with latest variants?
_red··on IRS Poses as Bitcoin Trader ‘Mr Coins’ in $180k Sting
>Sending money thru mail is illegal...

Its amazing how the average person believes normal human activity is "illegal"....goes to show the level of mental corruption we suffer under.

_red··on Doctors should be allowed to give priority to vaccinated patients
Doctors should be able to put fat people on much lower priority.
_red··on [dead]
Scam. The hospital has already denied.
_red··on Climate change: Arctic warming linked to colder winters
>you defrost your freezer and it freezes your apartment

You had 20 years to promote your broken models. Its sad that its devolved down into such anti-science.

I guess just keep goal-post moving?

_red··on Climate change: Arctic warming linked to colder winters
>A Worldwide 3.5C temperature increases means winters will be colder...

These types of logic-twisting pronouncements either indicate: Your models are wrong or you are simply transitioning into a superstition.

_red··on Podman: A tool for managing OCI containers and pods
yes, via journalctl
_red··on Podman: A tool for managing OCI containers and pods
There are lots of cools aspects of podman, for the admin one the real nice things is its integration with systemd.

podman generate systemd <containerid>

to generate .service files which can then be launched via systemd.

_red··on California to open five natural gas plants to avoid blackouts
"we lose money on each sale but plan to make it up on volume...."

ok

_red··on California to open five natural gas plants to avoid blackouts
Yes, its for social media: When your environmental activism only needs to pass <280-char limit
_red··on California to open five natural gas plants to avoid blackouts
If CA actually cared about the environment they would mandate everyone drive a 20+ yr old cars.

The concept of strip-mining 100 tons of land to make a battery and then charging that battery with coal/nat gas is not environmentally friendly.

If you normalize to the metric "joules of power per $1 landed" its still very hard to beat petroleum. Sadly solar is still an order-of-magnitude away. However via some magical thinking Tesla drivers will claim "the economies of scale of charging millions of batteries by a coal powered plant makes it more efficient than gas." Thats simply press-release style thinking. A 25 y/o Toyota is 10x better for the environment.

_red··on Israel’s Covid-19 boosters are preventing infections, new studies suggest
>Why jump to an assumption that there's a dark profit motive here?

Total legal immunity + gov mandates to buy your product. Thats probably the largest single profit motive that could possibly exist...I mean can you reasonably imagine a greater profit scenario?

_red··on Israel’s Covid-19 boosters are preventing infections, new studies suggest
>roughly 11 out of every 100 people in Sweden have been diagnosed with COVID-19, compared with 9.4 out of every 100 in the UK and 7.4 per 100 in Italy

If the goal is to shoot for herd immunity, then you would need 40-60% of population to have antibodies. No way to get from A -> B without people 'catching it'

At some point it needs to be accepted that Covid is now endemic and is 'never going away'. Trying to stave it off with leaky vaccines is like trying safeguard your 0-day with a leaky firewall.

Logical and medically minded people should focus on developing and testing therapeutics to reduce the need for hospitalizations. Sadly that will require loss of profits to very large companies.

_red··on Rogue antibodies involved in almost one-fifth of Covid deaths
I caught covid in 2020. One of the strange effects was tinnitus in left ear. The strange thing is I started noticing the 'ringing' almost right at same time I dimly perceived I was getting sick, when things were still just at 'mild headache' level.

I wonder if this is the work of spike protein causing some physical damage?

_red··on NSA: There's no such thing as a quantum computer that'll crack current ciphers
Its been amazing to watch companies like GOOG to release exceedingly careful press releases on QC. They carefully implied that their QC-tech were solving novel problems not possible with classical computers.

For those that bothered to dig deeper, well not really.

_red··on Israel’s Covid-19 boosters are preventing infections, new studies suggest
For me, it was when the Swedish approach was widely derided even though it was logically sound. (isolate the at-risk, everyone else get on with life and build herd immunity).
_red··on Ask HN: What can /u/spez realistically do?
Its an interesting problem and harkens back to the "99% of what you read on the internet was written by an insane person".

Normal humans have neither the inclination nor time to spend 200 hours per week micromanaging forum discussion. Thus, over time, mod control centralizes around those that do.

Point being: If he does ban the mods, eventually control will just reform around a similar group (if not the same group under different names).

Its a tough problem, and I commend spez on giving mods enough power to run their sub without much top-down interference, even if its to the point of destroying their own subs with blackouts, etc. However obviously a balance must be struck.

_red··on Ask HN: All this technology – what's the goal?
Its a complicated topic. At one level the tech is neutral and is just a tool, at another it engenders the worst forms of thought-control and coercion.

It should be fairly obvious that we are heading towards CCP-style social-credit score.

Those of low social credit score will appear as 'red dots' on your map, and interacting with those 'red dots' will lower your social credit score.

_red··on First US Census Bureau Report on Growing Childless Older Adult Population
One issue is that the childless will wind up requiring more state care as they age (since they won't have family to care for them). A possible solution would be to slightly increase taxes on childless to make up for that difference.
