_ofdw··on Libwsm: Wayland Security Module library for Wayland compositors
Wayland is a great example of why Linux is always an also-ran in the desktop space.

X is cool and has the cachet of being such a venerable piece of software, but it needs replaced. If you actually talk to people who hack on X you'll find (for example) that it's been client-server in name only for quite some time, is full of kludges, etc.

Wayland has been around for what, 12 years now? It's still a disaster.

When will the Linux community admit that Wayland has failed and move on to something simpler/less ambitious?

_ofdw··on Ask HN: How to get started with CB radio?
Unpopular opinion: Ham Radio is mostly full of aging, grouchy boomers who love to shit on neophytes for relatively minor transgressions. It's an incredibly toxic community and I don't miss it one iota.
_ofdw··on GitHub Copilot regurgitates valid secrets
Everybody knows the news can be charitably described as inaccurate.

Sure, Microsoft Marketing Department says it was trained on public code. The PM probably told them it was.

Was it actually trained on public code only?

_ofdw··on I do not agree with Github's use of copyrighted code as training for Copilot
Feels like everyone is missing the point: Copilot will ultimately serve to weaken the arguments in support of software patents and copyright.

That can only be a good thing for society (though perhaps not for rent seekers).

_ofdw··on “Please don't waste maintainers' time on your KPI grabbing patches”
KPIs are actually very good when used properly, but they are (like many things) easily misused. For example if you provide a service then your obvious choice for the team's primary KPI would be service uptime.

Use SMART objectives (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bounded) and set a realistic service uptime (e.g. how many nines you want in a given month/quarter/whatever) and KPIs directly enable good decisionmaking at all levels of the org.

Manager up in your grill about a choice you made? Point at the KPIs and say "this will help make it easier to meet our objectives for KPI 1.1" or whatever.

_ofdw··on The top-ranking HTML editor on Google is an SEO scam
Reddit has been gamed by guerilla advertisers for years, everyone knows it, and the admins there don't seem to care/are unable to do anything about it.

r/HailCorporate used to be about calling out stealth marketing/advertising but it's morphed into just discussing how things can inadvertently act as an advertisement aka society is full of branding and consumerism. It's a shame because it used to be a very high quality sub.

_ofdw··on Second Climacs – Emacs Implementation in Common Lisp
"Second Climax" is a well-established literary term for the climax of the second act of a play: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-act_structure
_ofdw··on Second Climacs – Emacs Implementation in Common Lisp
From TFReadme:

>At the moment, all you can do is type some text, and you can use C-x i to insert and existing file. Some basic Emacs commands also work, like C-f, C-b, C-p, C-n, M-<, M->, and C-x C-c. The visible window does not automatically follow the cursor yet.

_ofdw··on Havana syndrome: NSA officer’s case hints at microwave attacks since 90s
Hundreds of aircraft have phased arrays onboard. See this wikipedia article: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_electronically_scanne...

Specifically, I believe the one on the 737 is the Rockwell Collins WXR-2100.

_ofdw··on My experience with sexual harassment in the Scala community
>Being quite involved in the Scala community myself, I can tell you that the impact of his technical contributions is basically zero.

>None of the projects he developed along the years has had any momentum (save for one, called "magnolia", which has a modest userbase).

>He was giving more talks than anyone else in the community, solely based on vague ideas he couldn't even make happen. He was always bluffing somehow, presenting himself as some kind of grand architect pursuing grand ideas, while his effective impact was close to zero.

>I think he was tolerated just because he's been around since basically the language was created, and thus was friend with many people, and could tell stories about the early days of Scala.

Change just a handful of words and this exactly describes Stallman. I think my description is more apt than you might think.

_ofdw··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea
>If you're on a sales call selling a product that increases user retention and someone says "no we don't need that", you would often reply with "So you have perfect user retention then?" to probe them and re-open the conversation.

Assuming that I didn't initiate the call, if I tell some sales punk that I don't need their product and they come back at me with "So you have perfect user retention then?" my answer is going to be "fuck you" followed by ending the call.

Arrogance might work in used car sales but it's not a panacea for closing the deal.

_ofdw··on The values of Emacs, the Neovim revolution, and the VSCode gorilla
>one has exactly as much power in it as anyone on the dev team

Technically, perhaps, but not politically. In that respect everyone who is not a core maintainer is an outsider. The latter is more relevant when trying to get the project to change. Sure, I can make my own emacs look nice but that doesn't change the default.

_ofdw··on A Week with Plan 9
This is a weird flex, to choose to dig your heels in on this particular image/issue.
_ofdw··on The Future of RTS
>AoE 2 (DE) has 35 (he gives it a 3), making over 600 possible 1v1 matchups.

The 3 species in Starcraft are quite distinct in many key areas, whereas in Age of Kings and AOE3 (the only ones I've played) the differences between the factions were limited to a handful of units and buildings, but ultimately they all played pretty much the same.

_ofdw··on Diego Maradona has died
Unpopular opinion: He was a gifted footballer but was a total piece of shit in nearly all other aspects of life including abusing women and minors, to say nothing of his complete lack of sportsmanship on the pitch.

I hate that this guy gets lionized. To me it just underlines everything wrong with football.

_ofdw··on Life is 90% of my use cases for org-mode
I say this as an avid emacs user: Emacs has a real problem in that it's very powerful but the, let's say, spiritual leader of the project (Stallman) is so wildly divorced from the real world because of his personal choices that he really has no idea what makes a compelling UX vs what makes a complete mess of arcane incantations. On top of that, the documentation is only suitable as a reference for someone who already knows emacs, so it's hard to learn.

To wit: Again I really really like Emacs as a piece of software, and I've been using it for like 10 years now. Maybe 3 or 4 of those years I've been using it reasonably seriously and even I find my eyes glaze over because of how dense and unapproachable the documentation is.

On top of that, being a political project, Stallman actively resists certain improvements to Emacs that would for example make it work better on my Mac, because my Mac is nonfree and Stallman would rather have an objectively poorer piece of software than one that "encourages" using MacOS.

And of course the other senior people in the Emacs project don't want to go against Stallman, so emacs is doomed to being a mediocre niche text editor with unrealized potential to become a household name.

If someone wrote an open source clone of Emacs that adopted some sane defaults, modern UI conventions, and dropped all the political BS it could be so much better.

Alas I don't have the skill nor the time to attempt such a thing.

Edit: hey how about a substantive reply rather than drive-by downvotes?

_ofdw··on Why is the latest Intel hardware unsupported in libreboot? (2017)
Did I misunderstand or didn't someone find a way to neuter and/or disable Intel ME by setting the NSA High Assurance bit?
_ofdw··on Valve's Proton Has Brought 6000 Windows Games to Linux So Far
I feel like Proton is Valve's bid to free themselves of their dependency on Windows, so I like to think #1 will change in time as the publishers come around to the idea that Windows is slowly but surely losing its position as the only viable gaming platform.
_ofdw··on Discord is not an acceptable choice for free software projects
Nobody's going to embrace IRC again until multi-device gets solved.

But the default answer to the question "how do I have seamless transition between my desktop and my phone" for IRC remains "pay for a shell/bnc, run irssi in screen, etc" which is of course a UX nightmare.

Discord has a buttery smooth onboarding process.

_ofdw··on Rescuing vintage arcade video games from an abandoned ship (2016)
I'm no expert in arcade games but often the case with niche assets is that the cost of getting them off the premises can outweigh their market value, and assets are only worth something to creditors if they can be sold to recuperate accounts receivable.

For example via my employer I technically own a large multi-engine aircraft that is worth some $70 million dollars but requires significant repairs, engineering and refurbishment to restore to airworthy status, to say nothing of the cost of logistics to actually get the thing to a repair and overhaul facility. Even the cost to move it to a disposal facility (shredder) is prohibitive and requires significant logistics.

So it languishes in an aircraft grave yard providing a valuable service as a bird habitat.

_ofdw··on “My wife has complained that OpenOffice will never print on Tuesdays” (2009)
That reads like an email my grandfather would send me with a subject line full of "fwd: " prepends.
_ofdw··on French cities trying to ban public adverts
>tracked silently through the mic on your phone.

Perhaps if the largest phone operating system vendor didn't have a financial incentive to weaken privacy, this would not be a problem.

_ofdw··on “My Car does not start when I buy Vanilla Ice Cream” (2015)
The story reads like an email my grandfather would send me with 6 pages of fwds and signatures about emails being checked by Norton Antivirus.
_ofdw··on Pointless work meetings 'really a form of therapy'
I find 15-minute, daily "sync meetings" to be an invaluable tool in coordinating the efforts of an organization with many moving parts.

The meeting chair (senior engineer) goes around the room and we all have the same list of items to report on each day. It helps avoid duplication of effort and also increases coordination in pursuit of objectives.

_ofdw··on AMP for email is bad
It's okay. Google will kill AMP in a year or two, just like they kill everything else.
_ofdw··on Blackbird SR-71 Flight Manual (2010)
I just checked a modern copy I have lying around and couldn't find that particular phrasing. However there are lots of other gems such as "a malfunction of the extraction system that causes cargo to move can be extremely hazardous."

Oh really. You don't say.

_ofdw··on GNU Guix 1.0
How does one pronounce "guix", anyways? Is it "goo-icks"?
_ofdw··on System Down: A systemd-journald exploit
Launchd appears to actually work. And it isn't Poetteringware.
_ofdw··on System Down: A systemd-journald exploit
>systemd became standard thanks to meritocracy (important people in most distros decided to adopt systemd...)

But that's literally the exact opposite of a meritocratic selection.

_ofdw··on System Down: A systemd-journald exploit
Me too. Ironically, systemd is why I bought a Mac.

It's so hard to find a linux distro that actually works on a laptop but doesn't use systemd, so I eventually just gave up on Linux entirely.

That left me with BSD, Windows, and macOS.

I tried FreeBSD and OpenBSD but performance was atrocious and noticeably worse in almost every way than Debian and win7 on the same hardware. I'm sure BSD makes a good server OS but it's just not mature enough for serious work unless I was willing to keep my laptop plugged 99% of the time. But what's the point of a laptop if the OS performs so poorly it won't even last a 4-hour flight?

I similarly seem to be the last guy on earth who still remembers the bad old days of Microsoft's dominance so I won't pay for windows.

The winner by default is therefore apple.
