_nhh··on Lotus Notes and the dangers of starting from scratch
I totally agree. I am very grateful when we migrated off of it.

> The speed at which you could develop useful software was mind-blowing.

It is. And it's the main thing why my boss does not understand why rebuilding databases takes so much time. For him its just a little thing, some fields and off you go...

Unfortunately it is possible for databases to be copied, mixed and matched and deployed somewhere else resulting i a pile of duplicated databases without structure.

I am in the middle of it. We might do it till the end of 2026 with only two developers and about 50+ databases. Once we just _ported_ the databases instead of rethinking them, we increased speed by a order of magnitude. We can rethink later on the new platform

It's 2026 and I am still in the middle of porting our notes databases to web. Notes is still the main platform for our applications, we have around 50 or so. I have a lot of respect for what notes is and what it enabled developers to do and I try to bring some ideas of it to the platform I am building. Funny enough today is exactly the day I did the initial commit on the new project one year ago. Happy birthday to my platform i guess.

This is crazy. 1. Humans are turning energy in code too. 2. Business cannot afford "ultra-high-end-code" or dont want to. LLM's are the escape hatch for developers in those areas to increase throughput and quality (writing tests). Everything before llm's were already a burning piece of sh*t and now we actually can do smth about it.
_nhh··on We Got This Wrong. and We Are Fixing It
Wir hätten klarer kommunizieren müssen, was wir vorschlugen und wie es funktionieren würde.虽然我们 always intended for enrichment to remain strictly opt-in, we should have communicated better how that opt-in works, and importantly, how you as a customer could ensure you remain in control of that choice.
_nhh··on How to Build a Minimal ZFS NAS Without Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS (2024)
RAIDZ1 will add more stress to the consumer ssd's as to enterprise one due to surprinsingly different hardware. Consumer ssd's life times are calculated on a 8 hour shift (the tbw) and enterprise are calculated on 24/7.

Please - dont - use - consumer ssd's - with zfs raidz1

_nhh··on €54k spike in 13h from unrestricted Firebase browser key accessing Gemini APIs
With AI there is NO justification in NOT DOING IT BY YOURSELF. Why use firebase or <technology-x> if you can generate <the-thing> by yourself and deploy to hardware you own or rent.

I also have hard feelings against the apple developer program. They prove to be incompetent and evil at all levels.
