_neil··on OpenAI Codex CLI: Lightweight coding agent that runs in your terminal
Great point.
_neil··on I Open-Sourced My AI Toy Company That Runs on ESP32 and OpenAI Realtime API
Not on-device but for local network I’ve been looking at Speaches[0]. Haven’t tried it yet, but I have been running kokoru-web[1] and the quality and speed is really good.

_neil··on Gemma 3 QAT Models: Bringing AI to Consumer GPUs
It’s not out yet, but the upcoming Framework desktop [0] is supposed to have a similar unified memory setup.

_neil··on OpenAI Codex CLI: Lightweight coding agent that runs in your terminal
Anecdotally, Claude code performs much better than Claude within Cursor. Not sure if it’s a system prompt thing or if I’ve just convinced myself of it because the aesthetic is so much better, but either way the end result feels better to me.
_neil··on Letta: Letta is a framework for creating LLM services with memory
I think it’s just reached critical mass (and has been picked up by the hype peddlers). It’s been gaining momentum for months.
_neil··on Taming LLMs – A Practical Guide to LLM Pitfalls with Open Source Software
I think this is the reasonable answer. Langchain gets a lot of derision and rightly so but it does have uses for prototyping. It’s also a good resource for learning the landscape specifically because of the integrations. I haven’t used it in a while so I’m not familiar with the most recent updates.
_neil··on AI for real-time fusion plasma behavior prediction and manipulation
You posted this same comment[0] nearly word for word a month ago. Why is that? Not sure why, but “many on hacker news fantasize about fusion (not fission)” stuck in my head.

_neil··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
A real-time interface for my Fantasy Premier League… league. It calculates point totals up to the minute, which the official app lacks for some reason (can take hours for final point tallies).

It’s mostly an excuse to play with data processing with duckdb, remote APIs, and Pocketbase.

_neil··on WriteFreely: An open source platform for building a writing space on the web
Wondering the same. It seems like the answer is no but maybe it's because I'm not logged in?
_neil··on Artificial intelligence gives weather forecasters a new edge
Agriculture is a big one. We have an independent forecaster locally that posts on Facebook. People tend to check in with him around hurricane and snow storm times. It seems like his paying clients are mainly farmers.
_neil··on Effectiveness of an walking intervention for the prevention of low back pain
My mom could have had a career as a scientist, apparently.
_neil··on What happens to our breath when we type, tap, scroll
Are there any reliable breathing monitors? Apple Watch/Oura ring have some respiratory metrics but only while sleeping (afaict). A quick google search showed me Oxa [0] but I have no clue if it's reliable, much less while sitting/working.

Edit: maybe a pulse ox ear clip would work. Bonus points if it could shock me into breathing again when it detects low values.

_neil··on Optimizing the Particle Life: From 400 to 4M particles
Give yourself to the embarrassment. Publish for your past self. Or publish for someone smarter to come along and correct you.

(Currently trying to take this advice as well)

_neil··on Vvvv – A hybrid visual/textual development environment
As an example, if you’re familiar with Refik Anadol, he/they use vvvv for many of their works.

_neil··on Translating OpenStreetMap data to HTML5 Canvas with Rust and WebAssembly
Nice article. It's good to see regl is still being used.
_neil··on IPTV Anti-Piracy Threats May Increase Male Motivation to Pirate by 30%
Yes but the agencies are typically hired by MPAA/RIAA-adjacent groups. They purport themselves to be pro-artist but are mostly serving the interest of (and are funded by) major labels/studios. CreativeFuture, IIPA, etc.
_neil··on Experiments on a $50 DIY air purifier you can make in 30s
I have a setup like this in my office (but with a larger filter and gaffers tape for the edges). It isn’t smart and it’s loud. I’ve mitigated that slightly by putting it on a wifi plug and running it full blast when I vacuum or when I leave my office for snacks. Seems to work well enough.
_neil··on Experiments on a $50 DIY air purifier you can make in 30s
Expensive _is_ good […] once in a while. Most notably, Apple.
_neil··on Xreal's new AR glasses are aimed at the Apple Vision Pro
Is it? I remember a lot of the launch video being depicted in an office or studio environment, aside from the dad taking 3d photos of his kids.
_neil··on Llamafile is the new best way to run a LLM on your own computer
Maybe an M2 Mac mini?
_neil··on Ask HN: What's the most beautiful web game you've seen?
Light on game mechanics, but I'd say Bellwoods[0] is elegant. Wayfinder[1] has a similar vibe/mechanic (same author).

_neil··on Having a 20GB file that lets you ask an offline computer any question is amazing
Maybe you’re asking the wrong questions
_neil··on NodePad: LLM-aided graph based note-taking and brainstorming tool
Nice! I just started building something very similar on top of React Flow last weekend.
_neil··on Tell HN: Putting mirrors around my desk improved my posture
I haven’t tried it yet but have been thinking about it. It seems like you’d want front/side views to detect leaning. Kinects would work but you could also use old iPhones with ARKit or any camera connected to mediapipe.
_neil··on RasaGPT: First headless LLM chatbot built on top of Rasa, Langchain and FastAPI

_neil··on Seven stowaways and a hijacked oil tanker
Good point. I honestly rarely use reader mode so it didn’t cross my mind to try it.
_neil··on The i3-gaps project has been merged with i3
Can’t say for certain, but I think the speed has improved over the past several years. Definitely more stable (for me anyways). I haven’t used i3 so I can’t compare the two.
_neil··on The i3-gaps project has been merged with i3
britney innit
_neil··on Seven stowaways and a hijacked oil tanker
Same on iOS. It only happens after reading for a while, so I assume it’s being caused by an ad.
