_justinfunk··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
I kept being thrown off by the headline and article saying "cops".
_justinfunk··on Show HN: Bible translated using LLMs from source Greek and Hebrew
“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”
_justinfunk··on Show HN: Bible translated using LLMs from source Greek and Hebrew
I think you would actually find biblical scholarship really interesting. It's way more fascinating than you give it credit for.
_justinfunk··on Constitution of the United States Website has removed sections
You make presumptions to examine arguments.
_justinfunk··on Constitution of the United States Website has removed sections
Presuming this is just incompetence instead of malice, when the missing paragraphs are replaced, will "Constitution of the United States Website has replaced missing sections" hit the front page of HN?
_justinfunk··on Apple shuffles AI executive ranks in bid to turn around Siri
More than that, they needed a professional with vision.
_justinfunk··on NASA Citizen Scientists Spot Object Moving 1M Miles per Hour
I'm not being snotty. What is the fixed point from which they are measuring the speed? Is the object moving 1M mph relative to earth? The black hole at the center of Milky Way?
_justinfunk··on NASA Citizen Scientists Spot Object Moving 1M Miles per Hour
All motion in space is relative. Wouldn't it also be equally accurate to say this object is motionless and everything else is passing it by at 1M mph?
_justinfunk··on As an ex-Twitter boss, I have a way to grab Elon Musk's attention
"The state can't give you free speech, and the state can't take it away. You're born with it, like your eyes, like your ears. Freedom is something you assume, then you wait for someone to try to take it away. The degree to which you resist is the degree to which you are free" ― Utah Phillips
_justinfunk··on Taking a Radio Camping
> I had originally intended to spend this trip operating FT8 and CW, but for some reason I found myself really enjoying FT4 (a mode I had never used before), so I spent most of my day camped out on 14080Kc, and then shifted to 10136 and 7074 in the evening.

As a non-radio enthusiast, I was following along until this sentence.

_justinfunk··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
Who did you vote for in the EU? When were those elections?
_justinfunk··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
If Apple gets to have an nefarious agenda, then the EU may have one as well.
_justinfunk··on How to Turn Off AI Overview in Google and Set "Web" as Default
Nilay Patel interviewed Pichai and asked those types of questions. Personally, I found his answers unsatisfactory.

_justinfunk··on Using AirPods as a Morse Transmitter
This would be sweet using the tap feature in the previous generations of AirPods.
_justinfunk··on Show HN: Trivially Simple Value Toggle
For anyone who cares about the stack:

1) Node Express Server 2) Using Firebase RTDB to store swap state 3) CloudFlare Tunnel to a web-server I had laying around

index.js is 141 lines, including the HTML for the homepage.

_justinfunk··on The NSA is just days away from taking over the internet
My perspective is that emphasizing that the US is a "republic" and not a "democracy" is not just to be pedantic (certainly they enjoy being pedantic) but to underline that the US system is not set up to be a majority rule. All the wolves can't vote to eat the sheep for dinner type of thing.

Personally, I get suspicious when elected leaders start talking about the powers they need to fight the "threats to our democracy".

Worth revisiting is the CGP Grey video "Rules for Rulers": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rStL7niR7gs

_justinfunk··on Show HN: Using Google Sheets as the back end/APIs of your app
I had this same question. Also, are "developers all over the world" "happily using Zero Sheets"?

Based on OPs description, I wonder if this company was spun up while already doing business with those companies.

_justinfunk··on FCC to vote on restoring net neutrality
What I mean is that last time there was an argument about "Net Neutrality" - you had people on this forum both arguing for "net neutrality" but on different sides of the nuanced policy. You could say that the "stupid wrong person" just doesn't understand the law - but that is my point - it's a bad name if both sides think it means what they want.
_justinfunk··on FCC to vote on restoring net neutrality
Not again... "Net Neutrality", whether you are for or against the policy, is just a terrible name. It is too ambiguous.
_justinfunk··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
Also, in the analogy your chair comes with regular visits to do maintenance, improvements and add new features to your chair.

Also whenever you sit in the chair, there are real monetary costs to the chair maker.

_justinfunk··on Vision Pro: What we got wrong at Oculus that Apple got right
Thanks.... I was hoping you'd say something that wasn't going to tempt me further.
_justinfunk··on Vision Pro: What we got wrong at Oculus that Apple got right

Props to Brenden for the cool project but why is this a Business Insider article? How does that happen?
_justinfunk··on Deepest Dive Under Antarctica Reveals a Vibrant World (2017)
The Why Files did this episode last week (https://youtu.be/IQz7innxnms).

It is Atlantis under the ice, after all.

_justinfunk··on Quick thinking and a stroke of luck averted a Moon lander disaster
And EagleCam was not deployed at landing due to complications of the LIDAR software change, so instead of releasing EagleCam and not seeing the landing (due to the unexpected lateral movement), they can use the camera to confirm the status of the lander. So lucky.
_justinfunk··on Intuitive Machines: Odysseus Moon lander 'tipped over on touchdown'
The press conference for this was wild.

They discovered that they were in a more elliptical orbit than they wanted, so they did a burn to correct it and fired up their laser range sensor for powered descent to see how far away they were. That sensor didn't work. They forgot to take off the safety switch which protects the worker's eyes on earth.

So they swapped their range finding sensor within a few hours while orbiting the moon with a completely different sensor that was on the vehicle as a technology test.
