_hcuq··on I'm worried it might get bad
Yep
_hcuq··on Show HN: hcker.news – an ergonomic, timeline-based Hacker News front page
This is great. Love the small web filter.

Well done! I will be using it.

_hcuq··on Windsurf SWE-1: Our First Frontier Models
When I got my first job in 1986, the company had a tool that allowed non engineers to write code. Of course it didn't work. They could write code, but it ended up as a buggy, unreliable, unmaintainable mess. It turned out it was a good sales tool, get our technology into the company, then we would get paid to write the programs.

Then the were the the MS Access and Excel amateur efforts. I worked at a company that for years had a very profitable business replacing in house MS Access spaghetti with our well designed application.

Aaaand..... here we go.... deja vu all over again....

_hcuq··on Apple's AI isn't a letdown. AI is the letdown
Like the OP said "LLMs are bar none the absolute best natural language processing and producing systems we’ve ever made".

They may not be good at much else.

_hcuq··on DOGE Is Hacking America
Don't forget your Elon salute.
_hcuq··on DOGE Is Hacking America
Flagged of course . Bruce Schneier is one of the most respected cyber security experts in the world. But his opinion is no longer welcome on HN.
_hcuq··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
They should be happy. Now that can provide that amazing AI much more cheaply. They don't need half a trillion dollars worth of Nvidia chips.
_hcuq··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
Don't sell your soul, is all.

But survive. This too will pass.

_hcuq··on TSMC begins producing 4-nanometer chips in Arizona
Would be logical for US would bomb TSMC facilities in Taiwan in the event of invasion.
_hcuq··on DuckDuckGo donates $25k to the Perl and Raku Foundation
Maybe programmers at companies using Perl get together and raise the issue with management? It is a bargain. Imagine the cost of having to rewrite all that Perl.
_hcuq··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
Yeah. I just wrote 600 lines of SQL using a macro processor. Took 10 minutes.
_hcuq··on Toasty, an async ORM for Rust
Yep, plus learn SQL and you can use it everywhere.

Every language has it's own (multiple) language specific ORMs.

_hcuq··on Have You Wanted to Quit Social Media?
I think the problem starts when you have no real life community. You are prey to the algorithms with nothing to balance them out.

You may be ok, but I know a few people who have been possessed by the algorithms and influencers. They have one thing in common, they live in isolation with no community.

_hcuq··on Have You Wanted to Quit Social Media?
Ideally you read the news like you check the weather forecast.
_hcuq··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
Yes. The problem is the current law. Which needs to be changed. Make these predatory contracts illegal.
_hcuq··on Tim Sweeney: " Now Apple is demanding a 30% cut of all Patreon DONATIONS
You are right. This article explains it perfectly.

_hcuq··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Ok... Would a Linux based infrastructure be more resilient.

Does Linux require Crowdstrike style AV software?

_hcuq··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
"would be blacklisted, deplatformed, or deamplified by consolidated authorities"

Sorry. Not true. You have Black Swan (Taleb) and Drift into Failure (Dekker) among many other books. These ideas are very well known to anyone who makes the effort.

_hcuq··on Why do remote meetings suck so much? (2018)
But there is not a yes or no answer to the headline question, so Betteridges law does not apply.

From the wiki link you provided, here are examples of where the law applies:

"Is This the True Face of Britain's Young? (Sensible reader: No.) Have We Found the Cure for AIDS? (No; or you wouldn't have put the question mark in.) Does This Map Provide the Key for Peace? (Probably not.)"

_hcuq··on Astronauts stranded, multiple issues w Starliner – return flight window closing
It's not a generation, it's a type of person and a cultural attitude. The majority of older people own nothing and had no say in the running of the world.
_hcuq··on Ask HN: What skills do you think will be most in-demand in 10 years?
You forgot beer brewing.
_hcuq··on Software design gets worse before it gets better
Yes. And Joel Spolsky had a complementary thesis. Written quite well.

_hcuq··on Gerald Sussman: Programming is (should be) fun (2022) [video]
Second that. I have been in the industry for 37 years. The Taylorism didn't exist until "Agile" came along around the year 2000. Every programmer was a craftsman before that.

These days, I wouldn't take (or get)a job in most software companies. I suspect that in quite a few non software companies there are software craftspeople working away quietly.

_hcuq··on I don't want to spend my one precious life dealing with Google's AI search
Google is evil. Sorry.

It is driving people mad via the YouTube algorithms.

And it is destroying democracy.

_hcuq··on "'We Cannot in Good Conscience Encourage You to Pursue Our Profession"
Graphical creatives who can use AI will be demand, surely?
_hcuq··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Oil the guns. Count the ammo.. .
_hcuq··on The world has probably passed peak pollution
Don't the Haredi refuse to enlist? Doesn't seem sustainable...
_hcuq··on How I think about debt
I guess there's personal debt and there's company debt. There's a big difference.
_hcuq··on Elon Musk is throwing his weight around Tesla, comes in like a wrecking ball
The stock price is staying stable, the fan boys seem happy.
