_euac··on Last year, more people in San Francisco died of overdoses than of Covid-19
How exactly would you confirm - beyond any doubt - that contagion happened outside? Most people live most of their lives inside a building of one sort or another, so it'd be almost impossible to 'document' a case of outside transmission.

The closest thing we have is homeless populations - they spend most of their time exclusively outside - and they still get sick: https://www.sfpublicpress.org/covid-19-cases-spike-among-hom...

So making some big claim about how outdoors transmission is impossible is kind of preposterous.

_euac··on Last year, more people in San Francisco died of overdoses than of Covid-19
Then you shouldn't use qualifiers such as 'poor' to describe their risk assessment. Don't give the idiots pushing anti-masking rhetoric in this forum more wind than they deserve by propagating their memes.
_euac··on Last year, more people in San Francisco died of overdoses than of Covid-19
Why 'poor'? Have you factored in everything going on that person's life? Do you know if they have a friend or relative who might be at higher risk? What if they have a young kid and they don't want to risk it? What if they just consider wearing a mask a mild inconvenience when compared to - say - the risk of being intubated?

I honestly can't understand this whole obsession with shaming people for wearing masks. Who gives two shits if someone else is wearing a mask? How does it affect you?

_euac··on Google I/O 2021
Meanwhile, Satya Nadella isn't flashy and Jeff Bezos hasn't been involved in any kind of keynote speech on anything related to Amazon in years.

So my point stands: flashiness doesn't correlate with performance.

_euac··on Google I/O 2021
Meh, the outrage crowd in Hacker News is ridiculous. Any level of effort to make a company more inclusive as criticized as the company being 'too woke'. Meanwhile, Google's market cap has exploded in recent years.

Lots of people too scared of 'cancel culture' (read: being caught and having to pay the consequences) around here.

_euac··on Google I/O 2021
Meanwhile, Google's market cap has tripled during his tenure as CEO.

Maybe being flashy and showy isn't all that important after all.

_euac··on Vaccinated Americans now may go without masks in most places, the CDC said
The changes can be explained by two simple factors, without the need for some grand nefarious conspiracy:

* The CDC's default position is caution * We know more now than we did in the past

In February, we realized vaccinated people could still get asymptomatic infections. Out of an abundance of caution, the CDC recommends vaccinated people keep wearing masks because the vast majority of the population isn't vaccinated.

As evidence accumulates in the intermediate time, we realize that vaccines also lower the percentage of people with asymptomatic Covid-19 [1]

With even more evidence, we realize vaccinated people overwhelmingly avoid hospitalization, which is the real issue we are trying to avoid [2]

With those two pieces of information, the CDC can now change their recommendation. Nothing nefarious going on, nothing 'unknowable' to anyone paying attention.

The problem is when people who are already predisposed to distrust the CDC - most likely due to their media diet - and put 0 effort in understanding the changing landscape see the CDC change the recommendation and assume it must be 'something political'. Those of us who were paying attention weren't that surprised about the announcement.

_euac··on Why did OpenDoc fail, and then fail 3 more times?
Arguably, the dominant OS nowadays is whatever your phone runs, plus whatever serves the websites you consume. Microsoft Office reigns unchallenged though.
_euac··on Cancel We The Web? (2020)
This seems like a very arbitrary and capricious partition between those doing something for 'clout' and those doing it because they can't help themselves.

Do you think the people now being attacked in this thread because they originally called for Richard Stallman to face consequences are being 'canceled'? I see a lot of people claiming nobody should take them seriously ever again, blah blah blah. Sounds like 'canceling' to me. Is this mob any better than the supposed 'cancel culture' mob?

In other words: should we stop using the term 'cancel culture' only in one direction?

_euac··on Cancel We The Web? (2020)
While you might not be calling for ostracizing the cancellers, plenty of people out there are calling for exactly that.

There's a number of terms being used ('SJW', 'woke', 'cancel culture', 'cultural Marxism', etc.) to denigrate and quell any kind of discourse that goes against conservative talking points. I'd suggest you go and watch any of the self-described 'conservative comedians' to understand the level of otherization and systematic invalidation of any views that don't match theirs. Then come back here and tell me their behavior isn't as much of a moral panic as the supposed 'cancel culture'.

The fact that it is majorly powerful self-described Christian conservatives politicians that are constantly pushing the 'cancel culture' narrative should be a hint, don't you think?

_euac··on Cancel We The Web? (2020)
I'm always curious about this line of thinking. What exactly do you think people are gaining by - say - denouncing sexism or other kinds of awful behavior? What's so wolfish about that?

> If all the time I've wasted on 4chan has taught me anything, it's that calling people shitheads, or more colorful variants, does little to change their mind.

I'm not here to convert anyone. Catharsis is also a perfectly valid reason to do something.

> The problem with pedophilia isn't that it's offensive, it's the harm caused. As you well know... If you can make a good case that soydev memes are as bad as, you know, molesting kids, then please do.

Filling people's heads with 'edgy' stuff has led us to the current situation were we have self-declared incels shooting up public places while live-streaming their violence 'for the lulz'. The Christchurch massacre was the perfect example of the logical conclusion of the nihilistic onanism that is 4chan shitposting.

I'd argue that setting people into the edgy -> racist to be edgy -> conspiracy theories about replacement -> violence sausage machine, on the premise of laughing at 'soydevs' (whatever that is supposed to mean) has real-life consequences just as bad as pedophilia.

> That space isn't really meant for you and doesn't have to conform to the rules of politeness of mainstream culture, much as you wouldn't go into, I don't know, a punk rock concert and ask them to tone down their language a bit.

> Would you deny these weirdos their safe space, where they can joke about wagecucks and gnutards?

As I said, the problem with these weirdos' safe-space is that it is increasingly leading to consequences in the real world. They can say whatever the hell they want in their safe-space, but you can't ask me to not tell them how stupid and/or deranged they sound when they come to my space. That's the only way to adjust their expectations ``

> Ironically, you're being more interpersonally combative/abrasive than anyone I've seen on LS's channel! Less nice, in other words. With your attitude, and your sailor's mouth, you might belong on 4chan, after all.

Almost like people can have strong opinions without having to resort to calling others 'soydevs' and 'suburban white women'.

_euac··on California State Legislator Introduces Bill to Decriminalize Psychedelics
Yep, it isn't cheap, but compared to the peace of mind of knowing you won't die from ingesting some crap, $20 sounds like a deal!

Kidding aside, I'm not sure what margins they are running on. I can't imagine they are selling enough kits that lowering the price wouldn't it make it impossible for them to exist.

_euac··on Migrating to SQLAlchemy 2.0
Django is optimizing for the 99.99% of people rather than the 0.01% of people who manage billions of rows on a single table. I like SQLAchemy, but for most people the added cost of managing connections, transactions, have to decide whether to use the 'ORM' or not, manually having to 'commit' changes, eager-loading vs. lazy-loading, is a complete waste of time if all they want is a website that will be used by - at best - a couple hundred people concurrently.
_euac··on Silicon Valley’s Safe Space
Name a single example of someone who has been 'canceled' for fourth degree associations with white supremacists?
_euac··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
Except for - you know - the Capitol Police officer that got killed. Other than that, a perfectly peaceful protest.
_euac··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
Nice that you chose to focus on that and not on the police officer that got killed or the video of another police officer that for almost crushed to death while being repeatedly punched in the face.

One would be forgiven for thinking you are a dishonest hack.

_euac··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
While we are on the topic of multi-year propaganda campaigns, can you help me spell Benghazi?
_euac··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
Yep, as ‘delusional’ as all the warnings from people who said Trump and his group of psychopaths were going to end up causing a violent attack on democracy... that clearly was an overblown concern, right?
_euac··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
Buildings? No. Democratic process and elected leaders? Definitely.

You are trying to downplay this as if it was just some goons setting an empty Denny's on fire, but you know exactly what was happening and who was in that building at the time they broke into it.

_euac··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
So your argument is that the violence would've been justified if they had managed to pull the coup. Got it.
_euac··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
It's a trope at this point, but when BLM protested in Washington, there were hundreds of National Guardsmen guarding the entrance. When Trump's supporters broke in, the Capitol Police didn't do anything until one of them got close enough to our elected officials and got shot.

There were thousands of arrests because of the BLM protests. If you were truly in favor of 'treating them equally', you'd be rooting for every single person who broke into the Capitol to be arrested. Are you?

_euac··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
It will. Plenty of people in my own family who've been Trump staunch Trump supporters through thick and thin were appalled by what happened on Wednesday. If the Republicans want to heal the country, they have to reassure these people that there is a path to normalcy and it involves rejecting this kind of extremism.

The worst thing Republicans can do is pretend it's all business as usual and force these people to choose between 'the evil Democrats' (who they won't support, ever) or 'our guy who might try a coup here and there but at least is on our side'.

_euac··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
I keep hearing this argument, to which I have to answer: at no point, ever, in 2020 or 2021 did the other side - which you are trying to equate with Trump - organize an attack on the United States Congress while the totality of our elected officials were in session.

Trying to equate people rioting on the streets with an organized pseudo-coup-by-proxy is ridiculous and it just sounds like you are trying to give one side an excuse by using whataboutism.

_euac··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
The only chance in hell this country has of surviving is if Republicans widely condemn Trump's behavior and make an example of other agitators like Rudy Giuliani and Alex Jones who whipped these people into a frenzy.

If there are no consequences, they'll only get the message that they can do whatever they want and things will only get worse.

_euac··on Facebook: Free as in Bullshit
Only people engaged in a field are prone to have a conflict of interest. Not only aren't those two things mutually exclusive, they are highly correlated.
_euac··on DOS Subsystem for Linux
This used to be the best way to try Linux before live CDs became a thing. The first Linux distro I ever used (DragonLinux) was 'installed' by unzipping an 8mb zip file and running a BAT file. You could 'uninstall' it by deleting the directory it created next time you booted into DOS.
_euac··on Adam Curry launches a new, open podcast directory
> They follow where the media goes and take exception to the way much of the media bends the truth when they report on Trump

They didn't seem to care that much about right-wing media doing exactly the same during all of Obama's presidency. In fact, they regularly would regurgitate their talking points and promoted ridiculous conspiracy theories, including Birtherism.

> They don't do this because they like or want to defend Trump, they do it because they want to point out the dishonesty in a lot of what passes for journalism these days.

Then you would expect them to cover such dishonest media outlets as OANN, Fox News, The Blaze and Breitbart, right? And yet they've probably spent more time covering a single show (The View) than they have spent covering the full programming of all those outlets.

They can claim they deconstruct media all they want, but they can't claim they have 'no agenda'.

_euac··on Adam Curry launches a new, open podcast directory
I have. And the poster is right: Adam Curry's other podcast (No Agenda) can accurately be described as right-wing propaganda. If you don't believe me, I challenge you to listen to the show for a week and find anything positive they might say about anyone who isn't a Republican in Trump's orbit.
_euac··on Windows 95 UI Design
Hahah, yes! I was obsessed with THREED.VBX, but because I was learning C at the time ended up writing a whole library of Windows custom-drawn controls that looked exactly the same. I guess it was only later that I learned there was nothing special about VBX libraries and that you could (with some boilerplate) make them work from C.

Kids nowadays have it so easy with their Electrons and QTs...
