_bohm··on Post mortem of our 1st YC startup: a Reverse ETL
poor data modeling, or data modeling that is well suited to the needs of the application, but not to the needs of analysts
_bohm··on What Is a Query Planner?
I don't really want to have to watch 10+ minutes of screencasts to understand what a product can do and how it should be used. Here's a product that likely has some feature overlap with yours: https://duckdb.org/ Its homepage instantly conveys its value proposition
_bohm··on What Is a Query Planner?
Query execution speed is an important aspect to consider when picking a database, but by no means the be-all and end-all for most applications' needs. Your page is incredibly light on details about what the product can and can't do which makes it impossible to evaluate whether it's worth my time to install it (which I can't anyways since I don't have a Windows machine) and look. If a database product website can't tell me basic things about it like: does it support transactions? What SQL syntax is supported? Is it row or column oriented? What wire protocol is used and what clients are supported? It makes it difficult for me to imagine where the product could be useful.

Zuck is pretty widely despised…
_bohm··on Ask HN: Is Google becoming useless as a search engine, or is it just me?
This is a large part of the reason I switched to Kagi, I can tell it to always promote, e.g., the Python official documentation to the top of my results
_bohm··on Python Asyncio
It may not be the norm, but there are definitely apps/services out there that require heavy-duty database queries and can have their throughput bottlenecked by synchronous DB IO latency, and would benefit from asyncio on the database side. Also, SQLAlchemy supports asyncio now.
_bohm··on Python Asyncio
I think you mean it is not parallel. Cooperative multitasking is absolutely a type of concurrency
_bohm··on NASA’s Webb takes star-filled portrait of Pillars of Creation
The fact that the tiniest features of the cloud appear preserved between the two images gives an appreciation for how big it is. The two photos are taken 27 years apart
_bohm··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
DC does a pretty good job of being a middle ground. Very walkable in most parts, a high number of single-family homes, lots of park space where you can take your dog off leash. Houses have gotten pretty expensive over the last 10 or so years though
_bohm··on PostgreSQL 15
I don't know much about Galera, but Patroni may be of interest to you
_bohm··on The Majority of PostgreSQL Servers on the Internet Are Insecure
I think the announced results are specifically referring to servers available on the internet.

_bohm··on GitUI: Terminal UI for Git
I use telescope.nvim + ripgrep for what I believe is the same functionality
_bohm··on Soft White Underbelly demonetized by YouTube [video]
Ok, so what kinds of things should a person in that state be considered capable of consenting to?

My experience is that treating addicts as ineligible to exercise their own agency only serves to further alienate them and fuel their abuse.

_bohm··on Soft White Underbelly demonetized by YouTube [video]
On the contrary, I find most of his videos to be deeply humanizing of their subjects, who would probably be ignored or brushed aside in a normal day-to-day interaction by the typical viewer of the channel.

Also, speaking personally as someone who has a family member who suffers from addiction, I have found it valuable to listen to people speak candidly about their struggles to someone uninvested in their lives, in a way that my family member could never speak to me.

_bohm··on Bikes, not self driving cars, are the technological gateway to urban progress
Are our cities designed the way they are because people are unfit for better forms of transit, or are people unfit for better forms of transit because of the way our cities designed?

Is your contention seriously that we're incapable of improving anything because design decisions that have been made in the past are now unchangeable? Nothing must ever change after it is built for the first time? It's impossible to nudge people towards better transit possibilities incrementally through more thoughtful design? What a ridiculous take.

_bohm··on An odd discovery on Spotify
In fairness, I'd bet that most of your favorite tunes would become very un-catchy if they were stripped of harmony and percussion, and played by a quantized, expressionless square wave
_bohm··on The Zimbu programming language
The first comment on the discussion from 2009 made me chuckle:

> I use Emacs, but a Lua-extended vi could be very nice.

I wonder if the commenter is using neovim now that their wish has been made a reality

_bohm··on The Zimbu programming language
Safe to say this project is dead? The repo URL given on the website 404s: https://bitbucket.org/zimbu/zimbu
_bohm··on Francis Fukuyama: Paths to Depolarization
Did the Civil War really facilitate depolarization in the US? The South is arguably still recovering economically from the Civil War, and retains a very strong cultural identity linked to the Confederacy. Walk into the gift shop in the Alabama state capitol, and you can buy Confederate Army uniforms for your kids.
_bohm··on Why America can’t build
Oh please. Making eye contact is a surefire way to draw the attention of someone who is acting erratically. If you have the time and will to engage directly with every single one of these people, then be my guest. But to call this living in fear is laughable to anyone who's ever spent an appreciable amount of time commuting via public transit.

_bohm··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
That is indeed the perspective I was looking at if from. But you are right.
_bohm··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
Arguably the first Gulf War. The US successfully protected it's economic interest and expanded its military establishment in the region.
_bohm··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
Adding to this, young Americans have never seen anything gained from war. The war in Afghanistan lasted 2 decades and cost trillions of dollars, yet we have next to nothing to show for it.
_bohm··on New(ish) command line tools
It pipes a list of available git branches into fzf, which lets you filter them by fuzzy string match. When you hit enter, it will take the best matching one and switch to that branch
_bohm··on New(ish) command line tools
`tail -f` follows the logfile, so the command allows you to search over the logfile as logs are being added to it
