No. Sometimes you just want to make a reference without derailing the conversation. And all of you derailed happily.
_bernd··on Obscura: VPN that can't log your activity
Yeap :/
_bernd··on Israeli Minister Threatens Filmmakers' Citizenship over Gaza Documentary
You could also be "volksdeutsch". Like slavik people from former German territory or at least German influenced. They could be proper Nazis but with for instance polish background. Don't ask me how it actually works out but you asked...
_bernd··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
It's funny. I have lurked or followed the gas station anecdote of yours but from the other side.

After school I've worked at a gas station as well and we did not need to close because the shift swap was the same as over the day.

You exert your cashier(?) and the next one inserts the new. And you count in the office and take the time you need.

Half an hour incl. Some other minor takes was part of the shift. Simple as that.

_bernd··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
In the past I handled cash as an employee and as a volunteer. Like even a quiet night at a bar can sum up to a few thousand EUR.

Yes handling cash is not free. But compared to some charges or fees it's often quiet cheap.

Sure you need to think a head like how much small change money you will need or how much cash for change in general. You also need kind of routine and flow for counting and handling but even if I had to count up to 10k EUR in small bills t does not needed more then half an hour incl putting it into the safe or on the way home putting it into the banking machine... At least in Germany it's not that big of a deal breaker.

_bernd··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
IIRC then normal bank cards and debit cards can be charged with these future payments up to 500 Eur. So for small and normal cars this works.

I too have a real credit card to be able to rent for instance "bigger" cars like even an Audi A6.

Most often hotels also block 500 Eur, or they state upfront that you need a proper/real credit card and not just a debit card.

That's for me the only reason I have VISA and use it like 3 or 4 times a year...

_bernd··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
At least in Germany as far as I'm aware all banking cards are in fact "simple" visa cards who uses "V-pay", since 2012/2014?

Personally I "like" or prefer V-pay because it made payment in the EU more easily for me without the need of a credit card even 8 years ago. Since the pandemic, I only pay for a (real) credit card (with daily billing) because some goods or services can only be paid with a "real" card, like more expensive cars at a car renting company or sometimes hotel rooms and the like.

In general I try to pay with cash so nobody needs to pay extra fees. But more and more smaller businesses prefer electronic payments. Then I use the banking card with V-pay and to state it again, the real visa card is only used when no other options are available.

_bernd··on Astronomers Detect a 10-Sided Structure in Saturn's Atmosphere
No we don't have that much time. Over time there will no longer be huge areas of new star formation. Most stars are also rather short lived and can not sup6a plane like planet Earth.

Our sun, sol, has a neat live span so we can thrive for while if we don't **up this plants ecosystem.

But as far as I understood astro physics we are rather quiet early in the game.

_bernd··on Debugging my new network, when 10 Gigabit Ethernet Runs at 300 Megabits
No. Just no. If ISP would have deployed IPv6 early enough in time, like deutsche Telekom had a properly IPv6 network ready in 2012 or even before. And dual stack is no issue. But as always the ISP does need to not fuck up and you operating system should follow RFCs.

All these transitions methods are far to expensive and an unnecessary overhead.

_bernd··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
It's cool that you have not encountered any issues but especially birth control pills are also no smarties but many use them as they were candy.

In my personal circle I only new of a single woman who had no issues. The majority had all flowers off issues. During and afterwards. No most of the time it got downplayed or simply ignored but doctors and society a like. I'm personally glad that birth control pills are not longer sold as a wonder pill because many woman suffered needlessly and the worst part is that many did not knew that is was the pill in the first place.

I can highly recommend "the agony of the real" if you haven't read it yet :)
_bernd··on 11,000-year-old sculpture of man riding a leopard found in Turkey
I have no proof on hand but I have seen for instance a documentary on the French German station ARTE tv where they featured a kind of crazy dude who have gone through more or less every oral story of a tribe, the western world actually have written down. Then he started to compare and traced bits and pieces and this is really crazy who many parallels you will find. He then together with anthropologist estimated how old these stories might could be, based on travels and migrations like those of the caretakers...

> security researchers

I don't want the miss the young girls skills but she is no security researcher but in the eyes for her target simple a hacker. And I would say too that she got lucky. It would not be the first time that inexperienced young persona have to suffer the consequences even of their well intended actions.

_bernd··on Updated GPG Key for Signing Firefox and Thunderbird Releases
Yes but then you have to take extra care of this one special system which generates the key on this local system and which transfers the key material to the HSM. Sure it's a valid use case but depending on your requirements this could be a no go. But sharing key files with developers comes also with a price tag.
_bernd··on Show HN: I'm a 15 Year Old Wannabe Engineer, This Is a Cycloidal Gearbox I Built
I don't get the down voting. This dude is correct. An "engineer" is typical like a "doctor". Yes I also carry the "system engineer" with me, and yes I have university background, but it's far far away from any serious engineering what's usually done by computer people. I would also argue that an engineer more or less knows what he's doing and can predict the outcome. Most people I observe while they use a computer it's literally a monkey beating metal with flesh....
_bernd··on A shell colon does nothing. Use it anyway
Yes :) I'm using shellcheck since at least 2012/2014. And I loved the bash haters handbook <3 in all seriousness, bash will shine then when you have no heavy tooling available and we still have these systems around as at least at some point in time in their life time. With most stuff in life: you should take care and pay attention
_bernd··on A shell colon does nothing. Use it anyway
> Bash scripts requires "set -eu" at minimum, when written by LLM or human.

No. It does not. Just write good scripts and catch errors and handle them. That's the same more less with every language. And bash can be written in a way that it is sane and readable and maintainable. Just because you have seen a lot of junk in the language does not make the language bad per se. Sure there are a lot of languages "features" which are more then questionable but I want to rise again the point that it has its place and can be used in a good way.

Yeah a classic and indeed a beautiful one. I highly recommend to learn the module and craft the low count piece bodies. And if you need to meditate and build resilience try to build the huge shape :-)

_bernd··on A Farewell to ARPs: IPv4 Service on IPv6-Only Networks

_bernd··on Ask HN: What Is DMZ?
Personally I dislike this term since ages.

Yes, in the end it just describes a "zone" and back in the old days most if not all small scale deployments just had wan, lan, and a server network.

But what actually matters are rules between the zones. And again back in the days most firewall rules where simply, disallow wan to lan, but trust all lan to "dmz"/server. And between server and lan? Good luck -.-

Tldr old farts rant: please just all it all a "firewall". Be it zone based or otherwise organized....

_bernd··on 'They take you out of life, out of time': a journey into Spain's cave paintings
If they would have live as shitty as your train of thoughts then yes we as a species would have not survived.

Please have a look at how indigenous tribes live and cure the sick to get a feeling what it would have might be back 50k+ years.

What I got during Museum visits and talking with people working in academics those people had a pretty good living. Well feed and even major injuries were treated well.

So please come on.

_bernd··on 'They take you out of life, out of time': a journey into Spain's cave paintings
I wont blame you, but if you are interested, then have a look at recent documentaries about the topic. The German/French TV station "Arte" sometimes has the content in english too and other European languages.... They cover neolithic and bronze age quiet regular because we have many of these and other sites...
