_alex_··on AWS CloudShell
Does the extension build/test code locally or on the remote system? It would be great to keep my local system free of all the build tools and dependencies.
_alex_··on Understanding ProRAW
They run a sustainable business selling a power-user camera app for the iphone. People who like that app like this information.
_alex_··on Amazon Wants to Train 29M People to Work in the Cloud
In my experience most certs are only valuable to check the box on contract requirements.
_alex_··on Amazon owns more than $2B worth of IPv4 addresses
What are you talking about?
_alex_··on AirPods Max
Luckily by the time i leave my house again, version 2 will be out and will have fixed all the annoying version 1 features
_alex_··on AirPods Max
Bingo. They have a very distinctive look. You buy these and people can tell from across the street that you’re wearing “those $500 apple headphones”.

If you think of apple as a tech company, their products seem absurdly priced. If you think of apple as a company that makes luxury goods that happen to be powered by computers, they make perfect sense.

_alex_··on Monica: Personal CRM. Remember everything about your friends, family and etc.
I hadn’t seen The Hackers Diet. reading it now. about 1/3 of the way through and it’s really great. thanks for the link!
_alex_··on Amazon reportedly has Pinkerton agents surveil workers who try to form unions
I think you just described a union
_alex_··on AWS just went multi-cloud
Not true. I used to work at a very large us bank and while multi-region was a thing the regulators cared about, multi-cloud was not.
_alex_··on Stripe Treasury
So much this. I would have zero interest in building out kyc vs having stripe do it for me
_alex_··on Amazon EC2 Mac Instances
for real. I used to work at a large company in highly regulated industry with lots of scrutiny on our books. The number of meetings and program proposals it would take just to get finance to agree to the capex of standing up a dozen mac minis would easily dwarf the hardware cost. That's before you get to the actual work. From my experience, saying "we're just going to increase our EC2 spend" is a no-brainer
_alex_··on Amnesia – High-Accuracy Data Anonymization
Upload my data to be anonymized? Nooooooooope
_alex_··on Due to a problem with AWS, many "smart" vacuums or doorbells will stop working
I like that. That’s a great little phrase.
_alex_··on Due to a problem with AWS, many "smart" vacuums or doorbells will stop working
By all means, lets have consumers poke holes in their firewall for their vacuum. What could possibly go wrong?
_alex_··on Due to a problem with AWS, many "smart" vacuums or doorbells will stop working
Looks like zigbee is moving closer to critical mass. Echo’s now ship with zigbee radios, and the zigbee alliance has been a lot more active. Hoping in the near future everything just works on zigbee
_alex_··on Due to a problem with AWS, many "smart" vacuums or doorbells will stop working
My theory is that consumers already have wifi networks and know how to enter a wifi password (or push a wps button). They don’t need to buy some new base station and then worry about if it speaks the right protocol as all their other devices. Historically there wasn’t a ubiquitous, push button, cross-vendor wireless protocol that fit the bill. I’m really hoping that everything actually moves to local comms over zigbee.
_alex_··on The SEC “Modernizes” the Accredited Investor Definition
and he didn't get _caught_. He admitted it.
_alex_··on Apple Announces App Store Small Business Program
Apple has no growth left in selling phones. They are now a “services” business. Their most lucrative service so far is the app store.

That 30% matters to them a lot.

_alex_··on Amazon launches Amazon Pharmacy for prescription medicine delivery

_alex_··on 16-inch MBP 2x slower than M1 MacBook Air in a real-world Rust compile
Turns out software and integration matter
_alex_··on Software development: should we stop? Maybe we should
complete interoperability didn't happen, so we should stop writing software? what?

> Our computer programs are as adhoc and inscrutible as they were in the 70s, and we’re all struggling under them.

Objectively untrue.

I really don't understand the point of this page/post/thing. it's some serious r/im14andthisisdeep content

_alex_··on Gig economy companies spent more than $200M to bankroll Proposition 22
wages are a market. "should" or "shouldn't" is irrelevant
_alex_··on Gig economy companies spent more than $200M to bankroll Proposition 22
uber, lyft, and airbnb are not the reason our healthcare system is a mess. There is a lot of bad you can lay at their feet, but this isn't one of them
_alex_··on Docker fails to launch on Apple Silicon
I haven't touched fedora in a couple years. what's going on there?
_alex_··on Docker fails to launch on Apple Silicon
thread goes from people being confused that the DTK isn't the same as the release hw, to someone complaining abut docker desktop spying on you, to arguing about whether or not you should test server software on your mac. I feel bad for people subscribed to that thread that care about the actual issue (wanting docker desktop to run on m1)
_alex_··on Docker fails to launch on Apple Silicon
you should be able to run x86 vms through qemu. Just like running arm vms on x86 today
_alex_··on Notion Timeline View
there’s a style of note taking called zettelkasten, recently popularized by a service called Roam Research, that is ALL ABOUT linking notes together and traversing the note graph. obsidian is targeted at that use case.
_alex_··on Notion Timeline View
i’m playing with mailmate on macos and it’s making me hate email so much less.
_alex_··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
I think it's actually a good move for the first gen. If they put out the CPU frequency, people would be comparing it to the intel parts. ARM and x86 being different architectures, a 2GHz M1 is going to perform differently than a 2GHz Core i5
_alex_··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
I think it's going to come down to battery and the fan, which will let them run the chip hotter (faster) for longer
