__sharp··on Paper, the least terrible password management tool (2015)
The passwd manager I'm using wipes your clipboard after a short period of time.
__sharp··on Cops won’t need a warrant to pull the data off an autonomous car
In my ideal world, data should go to the vendor by default. As you said, it helps the product improve by feeding it more data, and it's simpler for most users.

With that being said, privacy concious people should have the ability to opt out, and either not have their data stored permanently at all, or allow them to store it on a personal server. If you chose to do that, it's on you to make sure your server is setup in a way to ingest the data, so no additional work for the vendor.

I suspect in reality most vendors would not provide that option, because data is so valuable, which is why it's important to have laws that allow us to protect it.

__sharp··on Why Are Data Science Leaders Running for the Exit?
Totally depends on what problem your trying to solve, what tools your employer have setup, and what data science you know how to do. The field is still not very mature, but as the tools get easier to use and companies understand how they can solve problems using machine learning and data science, and data pipelines are thought of at the beginning of projects, it will be a lot easier to apply more sophisticated techniques.
__sharp··on Simplified and community-driven man pages
What I like about this though is it's easy to forget the basic options of a command you haven't used in several months. Having the most common use cases at the top of the man page would save a lot of time than digging through some textbook.

__sharp··on Ask HN: Which are your favorite subreddits?
Why not just use reddit as intended, subscribe to only the subreddits you're interested in? Isn't that the whole point of reddit, to aggregate all the types of content you're interested in?
__sharp··on If you’re reading this, you probably don’t do hard work
I would say my life is pretty spoiled as a programmer, being able to work in a cushy air conditioned office, working on interesting problems.

But I still disagree with the author.. Hard work is where something requires a lot of effort to accomplish something, whether it be physical, mental, or emotional.

Physically demanding work is just a different category of hard work, not the only kind of hard work.
