__s··on RIP, vector database
I literally had opening slide about Worse is Better when adding mysql support to peerdb. Lots of things in mysql have v1 as stupidest thing that works, then v2 fixes issues

There's a bunch of internal types like decimal vs newdecimal, binlog started out statement based until they realized uuid generation is random so added data replication on top. CDC offset started as filepos before GTID was made so offset could survive failover

There were aspects of the design I appreciated (logical slots in postgres have a bunch of drawbacks avoided by just appending to 2nd serial log which has an expiry date instead of tracking clients' offsets), but developing against protocol you learn to not try build a consistent mental model

Writing to maps is common
__s··on Platform-independent SIMD in Go
I'm fine with Go, worked on peerdb & wal-g in Go. I enjoy programming in C too which lacks memory safety. I just don't claim otherwise

Yes, writing to maps isn't threadsafe, hence sync.Map. I learned this the hard way

__s··on WalShadow: Sub-second Postgres replication to ClickHouse from physical WAL
yes toast is a pita. we're currently working on 3 modes:

1. disabled

2. clickhouse, stores toast chunks on clickhouse then pulls them to resolve

3. shadow, stores toast in shadow catalog, obviously less latency than clickhouse but demands disk space

__s··on WalShadow: Sub-second Postgres replication to ClickHouse from physical WAL
we require wal_level=logical, would be nice to support looser in future

agreed that there's a huge complexity cost to going this route

This was under Jean Chrétien who recently gave a speech: https://www.cpac.ca/headline-politics/episode/jean-chretien-...

He supported US in Afghanistan, but refused to support war in Iraq since he didn't consider there to be sufficient evidence of WMD

__s··on AI Is a Harsh Mistress
Was recently explaining to my father how the free AI people interact with is completely different than the AI products we're burning cash with. That instead of hitting some critical mass of transistors we hit a critical mass of parameters which we then loop into themselves for reasoning

Other old sci-fi I've been thinking of is The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. Where claude is chew-z with its alien intelligence & when you start interacting with some code or writing you start noticing that the writer has steel teeth & feel like "damnit, this is palmer eldritch blogging again"

Years ago I was doing internal login pages for pay day loan insurance saas. Decided to put their logos to avoid mixups. Just googled. One was named Vision, copied logo from https://www.visions.ca figuring they did land on the side. Couple years later I realized my mistake & fixed, nobody else had said anything

In theory yes, just need s3 fdw

I demonstrated this with ClickHouse: https://github.com/ClickHouse/pg_clickhouse/blob/main/doc/of...

We're working on a chdb based mechanism to copy to/from s3, maybe with fdw on top we can back table in s3

You can try similar things with pg_duckdb & pg_lake

Using it to get real work done:

* https://github.com/HarbourMasters/Shipwright/pull/7047

* https://github.com/HarbourMasters/Shipwright/pull/7070

just need to give it clear direction, guide it about how to properly use hooks / preserve decomp code, rewrite all the comments, go back & redo things when it spits out some ugly hack, ...

but this does save time, especially considering this is working with decomp code where many functions are random hex addresses
