__derek__··on Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings to step down from co-CEO
I don't know.

But it looks like they basically have distinct roles: media company CEO for Sarandos and tech/product company CEO for Hastings/Peters. A little bit Hollywood, a little bit Silicon Valley.

__derek__··on Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings to step down from co-CEO
Summarizing:

* Hastings: Co-CEO/Chairman => Executive Chairman

* Ted Sarandos: Co-CEO + board member => Co-CEO + board member

* Greg Peters: COO => Co-CEO + board member

__derek__··on Amazon Closing AmazonSmile
Yes, I'm sure all the charities below that line would respect the decision and not ask their donors to raise a stink to keep them in the program.
__derek__··on Amazon begins another round of job cuts as it lays off more than 18,000 people
Vibecession
__derek__··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
If an AI uses source images to generate novel reproductions, wouldn't that still count as CSAM?

Regardless, I should have included the phrase "depictions of" or similar.

__derek__··on Amazon set to begin new round of layoffs affecting over 18,000 people
Wasn't it posted on Inside Amazon? They posted Dave Limp's update publicly.[1]

__derek__··on Amazon set to begin new round of layoffs affecting over 18,000 people
The press was correct, but premature, in November. It apparently ended up being a few thousand in November, so over 10k today.
__derek__··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
The pay is not even close to the most outrageous way to headline this article: it uses "toxic" as a euphemism for, e.g., not generating CSAM, rape, and other sexual violence.
__derek__··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
IMO, the headline ignores the crux of the article: that OpenAI contracted with this company to collect and label data for "a safety system" that would classify and filter out "child sexual abuse, bestiality, murder, suicide, torture, self harm, and incest." In the course of doing that, workers were (naturally) exposed to source data in those categories from the internet until the contracting company cancelled the contract.
__derek__··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
Folks are also pinning to the top of the range:

> The data labelers employed by Sama on behalf of OpenAI were paid a take-home wage of between around $1.32 and $2 per hour depending on seniority and performance.

__derek__··on Wikipedia editors serving long sentences in Saudi Arabia since 2020
If you can go much further, that would be appreciated because this comment was not substantive or constructive.
__derek__··on Wikipedia editors serving long sentences in Saudi Arabia since 2020
Indonesia is not an Islamic state, but it is an Islamic nation. These are different. Malaysia's constitution guarantees freedom of religion, making the state secular despite the official religion.

FWIW, the structure of your reply implies that "secular islamic nation" is a contradiction in terms. Maybe that was intentional, but if so it works better as a reply to GP.

__derek__··on Wikipedia editors serving long sentences in Saudi Arabia since 2020
> Please point me to a democratic, secular islamic nation. Just one?

Indonesia and Malaysia, for two.

__derek__··on YouTube Doesn't “Get It”
Shorts is led by a former VP for Alexa Experiences. If Alexa's incessant "By the way ..." notifications are any guide, the pushing will probably continue indefinitely.
__derek__··on Lawyers barred by Madison Square Garden found a way back in
I wouldn't be surprised if MSG's impact is actually net-negative. The complex sits on some of the most valuable property in the world, and its current use completely wastes the airspace above it.
__derek__··on Wyoming senators want to phase out sales of EVs
Right, "the federal government can (attempt to) influence what happens along them." Of course, that particular brand of influence has waned in recent decades for obvious reasons.
__derek__··on Wyoming senators want to phase out sales of EVs
Interstate highways are owned/operated/maintained by the states. The federal government can (attempt to) influence what happens along them, but it's not going to build anything itself.
__derek__··on Ask HN: Twitter Employees, How Have Things Changed from Your Perspective?
It looks like your submission didn't get traction, but there's another one a few hours ago with comments.[1] Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any of them are employees yet.

__derek__··on Ask HN: Twitter laid off 75% of staff, were they needed?
Probably not spite, but Tesla and SpaceX are exposed to government subsidies and contracts, respectively. If the next elections unlock another trillion in market value for his firms, this bet might look a lot better.

Small nit pick: Musk didn't put up $44 billion. His commitment is about half that, with the rest coming from other investors (e.g., a16z, Sequoia, individuals) and debt issued by Twitter, Inc.

__derek__··on Strava hikes monthly subscription price
That makes sense, at least. The examples I'm thinking of are running routes where the tool can follow the path as long as I place an excessive number of waypoints to force its way.
__derek__··on Woman ordered to repay $2k after her employer used software to track her time
I assume ReachCPA was billing clients for the hours that the employee recorded. That could be justification for tracking/auditing actual time worked. From the ruling, though, the employee sued ReachCPA first, which triggered the counterclaim for repayment. Maybe they wouldn't have checked if not for the wrongful dismissal claim.
__derek__··on Strava hikes monthly subscription price
I'm in the same boat: Strava is just for cheering on friends (and occasionally looking at segment PRs). My only gripe with Garmin Connect is that it unfairly negs some runs, e.g., calling my slower runs after recent snow/ice storms Unproductive.
__derek__··on Strava hikes monthly subscription price
It always amuses me when Strava suggests shortest-path routes with a dozen turns rather than biasing towards paths revealed by its own heat-maps.
__derek__··on Strava hikes monthly subscription price
The article is from a British publication.
__derek__··on Corporate legibility for software engineers
tl;dr: In order to master the state's attempts at legibility, one must embrace the legibility and use it to advance one's own aims.

I don't think that's exactly what Scott had in mind, but sure: if you want to equalize manager-worker power imbalances in the workplace, it might be possible to work collaboratively to make legibility-creating metrics more accurate and fair.

__derek__··on My list of favorite secure messaging apps
That's exactly my point. Ask the author. They implied that they did some analysis beyond trusting claims made my developers, but there aren't sufficient details.

__derek__··on The 'buy now, pay later' bubble is about to burst
Some small companies made a bunch of bad loans, but there's still no bubble here, AFAICT.
__derek__··on My list of favorite secure messaging apps
The introduction implies some level of security analysis based on the list of "criteria" (e.g., "does not expose personal information" and "does not leak data") and the "testing setup" link.
