______-_-______··on Killed by Microsoft
I'd call it dead I guess, but I don't see why that's a problem. It's a physical product, you can't keep manufacturing those forever. They supported it until the next generation of consoles came out. Would it be fair to make a site called "Killed by Nintendo" and list the Game Boy and Wii?

If they blatantly lie to steal your money, you can now prove actual damages in court. That's an improvement over trying to sue over a lost free gmail account. Not that I think going to court is an ideal solution, but what other choice do you have as a lowly civilian without friends in Mountain View?

I found this comparison of JIT vs non-JIT. https://microsoftedge.github.io/edgevr/posts/Super-Duper-Sec...

If you take those charts at face value, they're pretty incredible. The JIT ends up worse than the interpreter for most (real-world non-synthetic) use cases for power usage, memory usage, and startup time. Page load time is a wash. And this is after Google has poured $billions into optimizing V8.

______-_-______··on Building a no-code toxicity classifier by talking to GitHub Copilot
That happens sometimes when you move up an abstraction level. I bet "self.count += 1" is a lot longer than the machine code it generates.

On the other hand, most code is read more often than it is written, and those comments are very readable!
______-_-______··on A Way Out for A.out
If you couldn't transfer data memory to code memory at all, how would it be possible to write an ordinary compiler? If it's possible to run a compiler on the system, just have your JIT do whatever the compiler does.

This could be a crazy thing to say, but they might just be textile experts over there. When you're in Italy, even the "bad" food is great. In Switzerland, even the "bad" mountains are still great places to ski. And in Vietnam, even the cheap shirts are great?
______-_-______··on Buttons as Finite Automata
Random question, were physical radio buttons ever circular, or are they circular on computers only to differentiate from a check box? I've only ever seen rectangular radio buttons IRL, and a quick image search seems to agree.

______-_-______··on Buttons as Finite Automata
Just think of it as throwing the old button away and buying a new one. Buttons come idle from the factory. Once the old button is hauled away and the new one is installed under where your cursor happens to be, it transitions to hover.

Especially when you have 6 git hooks, and they're all run one by one in "pre-commit", which is written in Python, another whole slow interpreted ecosystem. I do not miss my last job.
______-_-______··on Dum: An NPM scripts runner written in Rust
It's not a ploy for clicks. Programmers spend a lot of time working with programming languages and so the choice of language is an interesting thing to mention, no matter what it might be.

______-_-______··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
This is the first thing I found on google https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11293-017-9567-1 but there are papers supporting both sides (eg sibling comment). I guess it's not as cut and dry as I made it sound.
______-_-______··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
I wouldn't take any publisher's opinion seriously. It's been proven that music piracy is _positively_ correlated with sales, yet the RIAA is still trying to stop youtube-dl from existing. I have to assume these pencil pushers in the game industry are equally ignorant, until hard data proves otherwise.

Those penalties are only theoretical. They only matter if the FTC bothers with enforcement. Lowly citizens such as you and I cannot bring a suit and cannot cost these companies a dime. Source: https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/inbox/can-spam_and_consumer_...

If the FTC cared, they would have made an example of at least one company in the intervening 20 years.

______-_-______··on Cloudflare have made it impossible for me to unsubscribe from marketing emails
The relevant agency would be the FTC, but is the FTC even interested in pursuing these cases? I've seen a few cases where they sued scammy businesses (https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2019/12/...), but there are lots of legitimate businesses that are nonetheless breaking the law. For example Xfinity sent me an ad for a voice-activated remote, categorized it as a "service-related email" and had no unsubscribe link. Instantly marked as spam.

What I want to know is: has there ever been even a single case of the FTC going after one of these real companies?

______-_-______··on Cloudflare have made it impossible for me to unsubscribe from marketing emails
It's definitely illegal, but (ianal) it's the kind of thing that's tough to do anything about legally. The inconvenience to a particular individual is so small that there are no damages worth suing over. And so nobody bothers. But add that up over thousands of companies wasting millions of people's time, and it's a tragedy.
