_V_··on OpenSSL 1.1.1 End of Life
I'm talking about this:

The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:

(see "package.unmask" in the portage(5) man page for more details)

# required by net-libs/nodejs-20.5.1::gentoo

# required by www-client/firefox-102.15.0::gentoo

# required by @selected

# required by @world (argument)

=dev-libs/openssl-1.1.1v

And many many many more packages. I went through like 20 yesterday and created custom ebuilds without mentions to slot :0= in ebuild, but there is plenty more.

_V_··on OpenSSL 1.1.1 End of Life
Oh yes, crypto/OpenSSL in C has to be the tenth circle of hell, the one even Dante himself would not dream of in his worst nightmares.
_V_··on OpenSSL 1.1.1 End of Life
This unfortunately already completely broke Gentoo for the moment :-(

Maintainers masked openssl-1.1.1 but there is currently a ton of packages with (sometimes needlessly) hardcoded requirement for old openssl. Including things like Rust etc. This will be painful.

_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
My genuine reaction to this was "holy shit! this cannot be real!".

After that I had to read your post carefully to notice that it has happened in 90s. But still, I was alive back then, it is not that long.

Thank you for this info, we still live very close to the Middle Age...

_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
If you are happy with your choices, it does not really matter what others (especially random people on the internet) think so I'd say just ignore what others think :)

Plus I'd say that to have kids (in a family sense) does not necessarily mean they have to be your biological kids as I think that the bonding/family aspect of it is much more important than simple reproduction. Atleast for the mental well being of a person that is.

_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
Why is that offending? There is some kind of drive to have kids/to reproduce. That drive makes biological sense. I'd say that majority of living things acts on it.

If you personally don't feel that drive, there is nothing inherently bad with you and you certainly can have full and happy life. Maybe even happier because you can separate your decision and weigh pros/cons of having kids wihtout emotional involvement. But you are still probably a statistical anomaly. :)

_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
I really genuinely don't see the point. Yeah, it gets old when people talk about kids and ask you about it (especially when you made a desicssion to not have them), but that does not hurt my feelings. Not in a way that I would have to go around telling them to "stop preaching" etc...

Everyone around me at around 28 years of age started having a kids and guess what: our coffee talks started to revolve around parenting quite a lot more...

Makes sense since it is literally the biggest experience/thing in life for them at the time. I don't care that much - I either join in or just wait a while for another topic.

_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
Wtf? O.O How can you be declared "legally gay"?

That sounds like something from a dystopian novel...

_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
Well that tends to happen. People usually talk the most about things that are a big part of their life. So if someone wants to connect with you, they will inevitably try in certain point of life to ask if you have kids.

Nothing sinister here...

_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
If you believe that your choice is right, why are you so sensitive about it? I'm asking as a person who does not (yet) have kids myself.
_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
It seemed like that when you were saying how you hate "that attitude".

Nevertheless, that statement does not say that there is not a life for everyone. It merely states that there is an inner drive to have children, see them grow and ultimately take care of you and the world. And this inner drive exists despite many people trying to say otherwise.

I mean it might be cool to work for $BIGCORP and build your career. You get cool things like nice car, nice suit... But the $BIGCORP will not hold your hand when you are scared before surgery, it will not help you move something when you are old and most certainly will not wipe your butt when you are too old to get up on your own.

_V_··on ‘I just assumed it would happen’: the unspoken grief of childless men
Is it? I don't see anything patronising in there. It is just a statement. I don't think that people who cannot have children are seen as something less. This is just you wanting to be offended.

And yes, in general there is almost nothing more important other than reproduction from the perspective of species. Nothing controversial about that either.

_V_··on Sag-AFTRA votes unanimously to expand its strike to include the games industry
I'd say there is a difference - even though they get paid millions for kicking a ball, they do what you would expect then to do.

Writers/actors/directors are kind of different - I would expect them to take a source material and create a show that is true (as much as possible given the media format) to the original source. Ideally without showing contempt for said original material. Either that or create something original - something that has new and fresh ideas. And blindly replacing one sex for another or one color of person for another is not my idea of "new" or "fresh".

To me it seems like they decided that these things don't matter anymore. So I don't mind if they go belly up.

_V_··on Sag-AFTRA votes unanimously to expand its strike to include the games industry
Honestly I believe that Hollywood and film industry needs to change. The sooner the better.

And I also don't really care about those people - most of them seem to lost any connection with outside world and passion for the craft. The only motivation for most of them is feeding their overgrown egos.

_V_··on Clean mount lists in Linux
The former has one big advantage: I can easily change "needle" without having to skip all over the cmdline...

Pretty usefull when debugging something interactively.

_V_··on Show HN: Little Rat – Chrome extension monitors network calls of all extensions
Hope it helps!

I was clicking around for a bit and noticed one more thing: it does not display "Anti Anti Debug" extension - but that extension suddenly appears when I toggle any mute button.

Maybe that extension is doing something funny? It is too late for me to try now but I will keep digging around tomorrow.

_V_··on Show HN: Little Rat – Chrome extension monitors network calls of all extensions
The only viable adblocker is uBlock Origin.

There are several clones that are trying to piggyback on that name though. You have to go for the original one - the one from Raymond Hill (or gorhill)!

_V_··on Show HN: Little Rat – Chrome extension monitors network calls of all extensions
Also it seems that the "mute" button is somewhat broken or something - I have ~10 extensions and when I click "mute" on some extension, it will toggle mute on the second to the last.

Repeated clicking results in loop of 1) muting second to the last extension 2) muting the extension I'm actually clicking 3) unmuting second to the last and 4) unmuting the one I'm clicking :-D

It is quite hard to describe, I may create a video and upload it somewhere later.

_V_··on Show HN: Little Rat – Chrome extension monitors network calls of all extensions
FYI: That CRX in Releases did not work for me - it did install correctly, it showed up in the toolbar but opened an empty popup (no extensions were listed)...

The upnacked zip worked just fine though!

Nice extension, thanks!

_V_··on YouTube gets more aggressive in pushing adblock warnings with countdown timer
Agreed. I even stopped using Safari on Mac when uBlock stopped working way back in Catalina. Even though I had to get rid of Apple Pay and good battery life.
_V_··on YouTube gets more aggressive in pushing adblock warnings with countdown timer
I don't know about good free alternative with support etc. That's also why I'm paying ~50$/year for a mailserver hosting - I've moved from gmail to just that and so far I'm quite happy.

Maybe someday I will spin up my mailserver also, but for now this is quite good balance between convenience & price for me.

_V_··on YouTube gets more aggressive in pushing adblock warnings with countdown timer
I don't. That's why I explicitly wrote that I don't mind paying for a service and also gave an example of another service I'm paying for... See the very last sentence in my post.

edit: To make it really clear, Odysee is not the only thing I'm paying for. I'm also paying for example for Apple Family, HBO GO, Spotify, mailhosting etc. I'm also sponsoring SponsorBlock extension. As I said: I don't have a problem with paying for a product or service. I have a big problem when someone deliberately and needlesly cripples a product just so they can sell you a solution to the (unnecessary) problem they artificially created. I mean: Background play behind a paywall? Really? Is that the bar that we think is acceptable these days?

_V_··on YouTube gets more aggressive in pushing adblock warnings with countdown timer
Yup, that's the other part of my problem with YT/Google: No support.

If something goes wrong, you are just SOL. No recourse, nothing and nobody can really help you.

_V_··on YouTube gets more aggressive in pushing adblock warnings with countdown timer
Yeah, still not budging. They keep shoving multiple obnoxious ads every few minutes in the video. It is the same as the predatory monetization approach in the (mobile) gaming industry where authors makes the original product so awful deliberately only so they can shove subscription down your throat. Basically selling you solution for a problem they created.

Screw that mentality, not paying them. And I don't mind paying for a service btw - I have a premium Odysee for example.

_V_··on AWS: IPv4 addresses cost too much, so you’re going to pay
Yeah, Jeff Bezos needs to squeeze few more dollars out for another rocket to space.

The question is whether IPv6 is really the way to go. Not speaking technically of course. End consumer does not really care about it and if you want to create (and sell) a product, you just cannot say "it will not work, get a better internet". So right now it means I have to work with IPv4 anyway and then it is a question of why even bother with dual-stack at all?

That means there is essentially no push from the masses and therefore no real reason for ISPs to even bother with pricing it and including into their processes.

IPv6 just failed to crack the chicken-and-egg problem. It did not offer anything substantial (or good enough) to the end user. Most of them will never care about not being able to get SIP calls working peer-to-peer as they will use WhatsApp or something like that (that works right now already).

_V_··on TETRABURST: 5 vulnerabilities (2 critical) in TETRA-based networks
TETRA:BURST is a collection of five vulnerabilities, two of which are deemed critical, affecting the Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) standard used globally by law enforcement, military, critical infrastructure, and industrial asset owners in the power, oil & gas, water, and transport sectors and beyond.

Most of the TETRA:BURST vulnerabilities affect all TETRA networks. Depending on infrastructure and device configurations, these vulnerabilities allow for realtime decryption, harvest-now-decrypt-later attacks, message injection, user deanonymization, or session key pinning. Firmware patches are available for some of these vulnerabilities, while compensating controls are recommended for others.

_V_··on LazyVim
It works perfectly together - one is not necessarily replacement for the other.

For more complicated things or bigger changes you would go with regex search & replace or sed/awk/grep but for small one-shot things it is way quicker to just click 5 times and do whatever you need to.

_V_··on LazyVim
I was using neovim but nowdays I just fire up Sublime. neovim remains as a choice when I jump to other servers with SSH.

The thing is that when I'm (for example) trying to RE some protocol and have bytes-only view, I move things around quite a lot. And Sublime has a powerfull tool for this: multiple cursors. I can create as many cursors as I need and edit multuple instances/bytes at once.

_V_··on Wagner coup in Russia? Wagner declared war on the Russian army
So far it seems like they are going all in. I would say that it does not even matter at this point who wins as it will destabilize whole country/region either way.

Also who knows what will happen in Belarus and Chechnya as there are anti-estblishment forces that have been waiting for quite some time for an opportunity to strike.

Either way this has huge potential to grow into something similar as happend to USSR.

_V_··on Wagner coup in Russia? Wagner declared war on the Russian army
That is the nature of an unfolding situation. I was trying to post updates from the sources I found and was hoping more interested people would join in for us to get clearer picture and to watch up close.

Saying that you cannot have conversation about this just reeks of a poorly veiled elitism.

Dang also said that "There hasn't been a coup" in thad thread you link to which leads me to believe he has no idea what is going on and what is at stake here or he simply does not care. Which is fine, but to say that there is nothing to discuss is just ... wrong.
