_Microft··on Starship's Fourth Flight Test [video]
The stream has ended now. I'm editing the comment to provide guidance for the next time that someone wants to watch a SpaceX stream via VLC:

Get the URL by going to the Twitter feed (e.g. via spacex.com/launches if you don't want to search for it) and extract the appropriate URL using the network traffic developer tools of your browser. It might be hosted on pscp.tv, the domain of the old Periscope live video streaming service that Twitter took over some years ago.

Playing this stream with VLC:

VLC -> Media -> Open Network Stream (Ctrl+N) -> Network -> "Please enter a network URL:" -> <insert URL here>

_Microft··on Signal: Will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees
Anytime you use a device you need to trust the manufacturer itself is not malicious. The difference between storing and decrypting a database on an internet-connected Apple device and storing it in Apple’s iCloud is minuscule.
_Microft··on Signal: Will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees
I would have to trust Meta on top of Apple for that (and there is no way that you do not have to trust the manufacturers of your devices anyways, imo).
_Microft··on Signal: Will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees
And we still can’t backup our chats on iOS [0]. Does that mean that we might lose the history of all our messages?

Signal developers really seem to have some misconceptions about the priorities of their users…

[0] It‘s not a limitation of iOS itself but that Signal doesn‘t want to allow to store data and keys in a way that would ‚leak’ them to Apple - not even if I, the user, wouldn’t mind that.

_Microft··on Plasma Toroid – inductively-coupled radiofrequency plasma toroid in xenon gas
Oh, great - the plasma ring shown in this video is super stable!

The project submitted here is aiming for an all PCB version (most likely because it makes assembly a lot easier?) or in their own words (taken from the project page): The end goal is to have all electronics (including primary inductor) part of a single PCB running on USB-C-PD power, in a well-built and aesthetically attractive presentation.

_Microft··on 2023 planetary heat uptake from termination shock of inadvertent geoengineering?
"Unfortunately, while their radiative forcing estimate is well within the range of others in the literature, their calculation of the resulting warming relies on an overly simplified model that results in a substantial overstating of current warming impacts.", https://www.theclimatebrink.com/p/a-problematic-estimate-of-...

The conclusions of this paper are being disputed. Read more about that at the page linked above.

Salt/seawater is a possibility. The proposed method is called marine cloud brightening.

_Microft··on Startup is about to install bladeless rooftop wind turbines on box buildings
More comparisons: the power of water cookers, (a single) electric stove top and fan heaters are usually in the order of 2kW (at least in Europe with 230V AC)

What is kw/h with a lowercase w? I’m familiar with W which stands for Watt, a unit of power. Could it simply be a typo like in GP’s comment who misspelled kWh?
_Microft··on Japan's clothes-drying bathrooms
Maybe make sure that there is no medical condition if you are experiencing night sweats regularily https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_sweats

> In windows you just click twice.

Uh, oh, that means you're working on an admin account. If you are using a normal user account, you will be prompted to enter your admin credentials instead.

(You can also force this behaviour on administrator accounts. Search for the registry setting "ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin")

"You fax it some C code, it compiles it, runs it, faxes back the result"
_Microft··on Make timelapses easily using FFmpeg
ffmpeg is such a great tool!

Be aware that -pattern_type glob is not supported on Windows, though, iirc. A workaround is to name your jpegs with consecutive numbers (not necessarily starting at 0) and use a pattern with a counter placeholder in it instead.

_Microft··on Germany solar power output jumps to record highs
Small scale systems (Balkonkraftwerke („balcony power plant“) as we call them) that feed directly into the circuit of a house will appear as reduced load in these numbers (i.e. measured load isn‘t as high as it would be otherwise).

_Microft··on Israel shuts down local Al Jazeera offices
I think it's neither surprising nor necessarily bad. Just think of how Russia Today was spreading disinformation and propaganda about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Banning them from the EU was certainly in our interest.
_Microft··on Turning AirPods into a fitness tracker
If you are planning to submit this here then you can do a „Show HN:“ post which makes it clear that this is something you created yourself.
_Microft··on Turning AirPods into a fitness tracker
Maybe there are other exercises with similar motion (squats?) that you would like to support as well? Great idea to use these sensors and I also like the idea of providing audio feedback btw.
_Microft··on Turning AirPods into a fitness tracker
Is this data that could be fed into the Health app (type of training, time of training, repetitions, duration of training)? The Health app is relatively picky about what sports are supported though…
_Microft··on How to build a $20B semiconductor fab
Do you have examples for models of laser printers can actually achieve a resolution of 10000dpi? It doesn't need to be office equipment. Any example would suffice as I so far thought that laser printouts were limited to a maximum resolution between 1200 and 2400dpi.
_Microft··on Firefox Power User Keeps 7,400 Browser Tabs Open for 2 Years
As long as you don't have private browsing windows open (these won't be restored), you should be able to close Firefox and have it restore all tabs after a restart. It will unload all tabs, i.e. they won't use memory until you focus them again.
_Microft··on Firefox Power User Keeps 7,400 Browser Tabs Open for 2 Years
"Firefox View", accessible via a pinned-tab-like button at the beginning of the tab strip gives a good way already to manage lots of tabs. It allows to search tab titles from all Firefox windows and gives access to tabs on connected devices and the browsing history.
