_Microft··on Butterflies accumulate static electricity to attract pollen without contact
From the paper[0] itself:

„This pollen can then be deposited on subsequently visited flowers, either by direct contact, or similarly through electrostatic attraction, because the pollen can equalize to the potential of the pollinator, and will then experience an attractive force towards the electric field of the flower. Experimental evidence demonstrates this bidirectional electrostatic pollen transfer.“

They might even be paid for consuming power because that provides stability to the grid [0] in such a situation. Too little load causes the frequency on the grid to rise which is only acceptable within narrow limits.

I had heard of people creating adapter parts for different systems but from what I remember, these attempts were by far not as broad as this one. Thanks for sharing!

Tip for working with Dupont connectors: if you have N cables connecting to a pin header next to each other, then remove them from their 1x1 plastic housings and put all cables into a single Nx1 housing (there are very cheap sets with a couple of dozen different Nx1 and Nx2 housings each). It will almost completely prevent cables disconnecting themselves from the pin header.

Feel free to modify this as needed, e.g. by having a 6x1 connector on one side splitting into 4x1 and 2x1 on the other if that’s how the cables group. Or use a …x2 connector if the pin header has two rows like here.

You will love it, believe me.

_Microft··on Using copper to convert CO₂ to methane
What is known as "natural gas" is chemically mostly methane if that helps with answering your question.

From what I know it is just cheaper to flare natural gas that occurs as byproduct of oil production than to deal with it otherwise.

_Microft··on 2D DLA Experiments
DLA is short for "diffusion limited aggegration"[0]. There are particles performing a random walk [1] and they aggregate (= stick together) if they come close enough to each other.

In the second experiment with directional bias the particles are experiencing a constant drift on top of the random walk (or are maybe having unequal probabilities of moving in different directions?)

_Microft··on Impossibly thin fabric could cool you down by 16-plus degrees
The unit is Fahrenheit here, that is 16°F ≈ 8.9°C. It‘s also mentioned towards the end of the article but just to give readers an idea what to expect. The difference is also compared to silk while other, more modern fabrics perform much better and close the gap to the new material to just over 2.3°C/4°F.

These are certainly impressive numbers!

_Microft··on Flesh-Eating Bacteria That Can Kill in Two Days Spreads in Japan
Kikuchi urged people to maintain hand hygiene and to treat any open wounds.

People washed and disinfected their hands a lot more often and thoroughly during the pandemic. At least here in Germany. They stopped shaking hands, washed them thoroughly (at least twenty seconds, using soap) and disinfected them when entering or leaving stores. Now they shake hands again and the disinfectant is gone. Who knows how everyone is washing their hands today. It’s not far fetched to suspect that this behavior might have helped.

_Microft··on The Woman Who Could Smell Parkinson's
"Her grandmother was a “hyperosmic,” and she [was] teaching [Joy] to distinguish the scent of the petals from the scent of the leaves from the scent of the pistils and stamens."

One might wonder how much of Joy's hyperosmia was acquired by continuous training, similar to how a sommelier learns to discern flavours.

_Microft··on I like the RP2040
The same user has also got a board with touch sliders, consisting of inversely tapering touch areas that allow to compute the touch position along the axis (same for rotary sliders that use three of these in a circle configuration).

_Microft··on I like the RP2040
I also did not understand this complaint. On a Pico, any GPIO can be used for touch (using PIO of course).

Example with 23 touch buttons if I counted that correctly:

_Microft··on pico9918: A replacement TMS9918A/TMS9929A VDP using a Raspberry Pi Pico
Here's a quote from Eben Upton (CEO of Raspberry Pi Trading, 2023):

“We know what people don’t like about [RP]2040,” Upton admitted at the event, “the [Arm Cortex-]M0+ [architecture], could have more RAM, could have more GPIO [General-Purpose Input/Output], and we know what people do like — the PIO [Programmable Input/Output blocks]… and we have a chip team.”, [0][1]

That doesn't sound too bad, hmm?

_Microft··on Super Heavy landing burn and soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico [video]
I’d bet that Starship will have a continuously updated, estimated landing point throughout the whole maneuver anyways. A plane can easily go 6km in about a minute (at a mere 360km/h), so if there was a plane trying to film the descent and landing, it will have some kind of footage.
_Microft··on Super Heavy landing burn and soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico [video]
Raptor is a full flow staged combustion engine [0], that means that the preburner exhaust is fed into the main combustion chamber. This is more efficient than dumping it separately like it happens on the Falcon 9 engines [1]. The black, sooty smoke on the first image of the Wikipedia article [1] is the (kerosene) fuel-rich preburner exhaust of the Merlin engine.
