_8j7i··on End of an Era: NTSC Finally Goes Dark in America
I turned this off on my TV and was just like...wow! So much better!

From what I could tell, my TV was taking a perfect 1920x1080 signal, and instead of perfectly stretching it to 4K (4 pixels on the screen for every pixel in the input), it was first cropping the edges, then stretching.

This results in clean lines in the input becoming more "fuzzy" on the screen, which a very slight zoom effect.

It's maddening and I can't understand why it would be the default. Across my HDMI sources, TV apps, and live TV, none of these signals need any cropping. They fit perfectly with my settings.

I think that's truly fantastic.
_8j7i··on AMD Threadripper 3970X under heavy AVX2 load: Defective by design?
I don't understand, when I buy a processor I expect it to work 100% load for all of the instruction set. Anything less is a defective product, and should be returned.

Furthermore, it should be able to do this 24/7 for years at a time.

This test, assuming it actually does kill the processor or stops executing, clearly indicates it should be returned.

_8j7i··on We ‘may’ have discovered a potential remedy for tinnitus
Is it possible that tinnitus is actually just a person's inability to ignore natural noise in the hearing systems? More of a physchological issue like chewing fingernails or having OCD, but which can be amplified by legitimate physical hearing damage?

I ask this because for all the life I can remember, I've always been able to perceive a high-pitched tone, even in completely quiet environments. If I actually focus on it, it's quite loud and annoying.

It's just that my "default state" is to not think or notice this tone, and instead focus on "actual" sounds.

I have been tested to not have hearing damage.

_8j7i··on My Home Lab Server with 20 Cores / 40 Threads and 128 GB Memory
I wish I had something written up to share. But it's honestly a mix of things I love to play with. Several full blockchain nodes (especially uploading to light clients), bittorrent client (seeding tons), plex, home assistant, boinc, tor bridge, grafana, web and email servers, zoneminder CCTV, mandelbulber (clustered rendering of 3d fractals), four different Minecraft servers (some modded), ADS-B plane tracking, weather station and radiation monitoring, and a bunch more.

It's really just one big toy for me. I'm using Proxmox for high availability of over 30 VM's (still want to play with containers soon).

EDIT: OPNSense firewall says I uploaded over 15TB in the last month. Fortunately Google fiber doesn't care!

_8j7i··on CIA’s Latest Layer: An Onion Site
That's sort of the point, since it's actually generated from a public key that the operator holds [1].

Once you have confirmed a domain is correct, you should save it yourself, and only access that saved link.

Using any forums/wikis/search to find onion links (may) leave you with stolen credentials or a hacked machine.

It's cumbersome for sure, but the beauty is it's self-authenticating. Don't forget to turn off JS. :)

_8j7i··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
"...he clammed up, taking the Fifth, and citing constitutional rights against unwarranted searches.

...border agents told him he had no constitutional nor any legal protections, and threatened him with criminal charges should he not concede to the search.

...he was eventually allowed to leave with his belongings, the devices still locked, and no charges were pressed."

My goodness! I guess those protections did exit after all! :)

Guidelines:

-Goons can lie to you all they want. Never budge.

-Politely refuse, and remain cordial. Stay strong mentally.

-Make sure your devices are turned off prior to even leaving for the airport.

This is the sick reality we live in.
