_1qd4··on CES Was Full of Useless Robots and Machines That Don’t Work
Too small, completely useless.

I don't need a dishwasher to wash a couple of glasses and cutlery. Those take 2 seconds to do by hand.

I need a dishwasher because 20 people were just over and I don't want to be up all night washing. Or we just made an intense meal that needed lots of equipment and I don't want to wash 10 bowls, 3 knives, 4 spoons, a spatula, and a cutting board.

_1qd4··on Mothers who regret having children are speaking out
Society has lost its way if arguably one of our most fundamental, carnal functions is too burdensome to carry out. Whether the burden is monetary (day care, cost of goods) or social (sports, parties), there's got to be a reckoning coming. There's no way we can sustain this way of life.
_1qd4··on Suicide by Culture
Divorce is a relatively new thing. You used to just work on your problems and stay together for the family. Family courts are the symptom not the problem.

I think western society causes (or promotes?) a bit of hyper-individualism which makes cohabitation really difficult. We also have much easier access to alcohol, drugs, and gambling - aka “family destroyers”.

_1qd4··on What every PhD should know before interviewing with a tech startup
> I had never even heard of a semaphore

I deal with this a lot as a programmer who doesn't have a comp sci degree. I know what a semaphore is, I just don't call it a semaphore and I didn't know that it was called a "semaphore". I have been happily chugging along calling these "control variables"

_1qd4··on Backblaze lost over 13TB of my data
What the heck are you storing that you've used 20-30TB? I don't really get it.

UHD Movies? Why would you save those in the age of streaming? Family pictures/videos? At 20TB, you must have hundreds of thousands of pictures. There's not enough time in your life to look at all those! The only thing I can think of is that you shoot photo/video professionally, or maybe do some kind of 3D/video rendering?

But I agree with you - when you have this much data, why the hell are you transferring it to the cloud? Buy a couple harddrives, load them up, and stick them in a safe.

_1qd4··on Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Resigns as C.E.O.
I call this the "pace car" when driving. You can do anything the pace car does because he'll get caught first - he sets the pace.

Uber is the pace car and the police pulled him over, Lyft saw this and applied their brakes.

_1qd4··on Women Who Code (YC S16) helps female engineers level up in their careers
In Ontario, male teachers are not allowed to take children to the washroom, even if the child is a boy. This is a problem because if a child with a disability needs to use the washroom, he needs to wait until a female staff member is available.

I understand why men would drop out of the school system. Before you even start, you're already considered a predator.

_1qd4··on The 9 lines of code that Google allegedly stole from Oracle
Looks like something I've written a hundred times. It's a common pattern, you could "steal" this just through organically writing a program.

The more I hear about this case, the more I realize it's just a bunch of lawyers trying to pad their bank accounts. No sane engineer would claim this is infringement.

_1qd4··on Show HN: Interviews can be stressful – give take-home projects instead
This is taking interviewing and hiring in the wrong direction. At my company, we have a relatively short interview process, followed by a 3 month full salary probation period.

The interview is used to weed out "red flaggers" and identify high-level strengths and weaknesses. It is completely non-technical. We assume that the person applying for the job has the technical requirements. (We also make judicious use of references, something people seem to have forgotten about. Quick phone call to previous employers can save you tons of money!)

The 3 month probation period is the real "test" and the applicant will be put on a small project with another employee mentoring. If someone lacks technical ability, it will be evident in the first few days and we can move on to the next applicant. If the person doesn't like the work environment, they can walk away no questions asked (maybe the commute is too long or they don't like the office space, etc. etc.).

This is cheaper than having directors and executives try to plan around all sorts of interview stages. It is much less stressful, as the applicant, once into the probation period, is treated like a regular employee and has much more opportunity to "prove their worth". Stop adding more shit to the interview! Don't make it longer, do the opposite!
