Zr40··on Sideloading f.lux on iOS with Xcode 7
Apple added the ability to compile and deploy apps without a developer license in iOS 9 and Xcode 7.

In fact, Apple even advertises this ability as the most prominent new feature of Xcode 7.[1]

If your response were true, Apple would never have added this ability in the first place.

Zr40··on Apple’s content blocking is chemo for the cancer of adtech
The future doesn't apply today. Today, webviews don't implement content blocking. GGP appeared to assume webviews did implement that.
Zr40··on Apple’s content blocking is chemo for the cancer of adtech
It's a different domain. Content blocking only applies to Safari. iAd ads only appear in third party apps if the developer chooses to use them. They could also use a different ads provider. That's not affected by content blocking because it's not a web page inside Safari.
Zr40··on SSD: How to Optimize Your Solid State Drive for Linux
It's confusing to people who are told to disable defragmentation on SSDs. It's the same button for both HDDs and SSDs, and both TRIM and defragmentation are referred to using the same word, 'optimization'[0]. An unaware user would not know the difference.

Zr40··on SSD: How to Optimize Your Solid State Drive for Linux
The curvature could be an artefact from the camera lens.
Zr40··on SSD: How to Optimize Your Solid State Drive for Linux
I don't know about earlier Windows, but Windows 8 does not attempt to defragment drives that identify themselves as being solid-state. It does invoke TRIM on drives that advertise that feature, and confusingly, this is done through the same defragmentation UI.

The practice of hypermiling is about burning less fuel to reach your destination. Likewise, avoiding unnecessary braking saves on replacement costs. It's certainly not needed for any car, but it saves money.
Zr40··on Dart for Android apps with 120fps
Even with a 60 Hz screen this will be advantageous. If the application is fast enough to render at 120 fps, rendering at 60 fps means that the UI thread will be idle at least half of the time, so the processor will draw less battery power.
Zr40··on Foreign Linux: Run Linux binaries on Windows without drivers or modification
Cmd.exe isn't a terminal emulator, it's a shell. Conhost.exe (and before Windows 7, csrss.exe) is the process behind the terminal window.
Zr40··on Coffeescript 1.9.0 contains a backwards incompatible change
According to [1], the previously accepted syntax was never documented as being valid. That means that code affected by this change was relying on undocumented behavior.

Zr40··on Getting Out of MySQL Character Set Hell (2009)
That's not correct. The Basic Multilingual Plane (like Unicode itself) is not an encoding, it is a subset of the Unicode codespace. UTF-8 restricted to sequences of 3 bytes can only represent characters between U+0000 and U+FFFF inclusive, which happens to exactly contain the characters defined by the BMP.
Zr40··on Ewww, You Use PHP? [2010]
It's not about PHP being "uncool", it's about the many things in PHP being objectively wrong.[1] Of course it's perfectly possible to write good code in PHP, but compared to other languages, writing proper PHP requires a lot more effort.

Zr40··on Running OS X Mavericks under QEMU with KVM
What kind of graphics capabilities do you require?

My current MacBook Pro can switch between an AMD Radeon 6770M and Intel HD Graphics 3000. I've found that the Intel is fast enough, and the Radeon is hot and uses a lot of energy.

I usually don't play games, I don't do graphics development, and I don't use Adobe products. So in practice, I rarely need the Radeon.

Zr40··on Update on NPAPI Deprecation
It could refer to various Facebook apps/games that require a browser plugin to access native graphics capabilities or to escape from the browser and install files locally.
Zr40··on CNAME Flattening: RFC-Compliant CNAMEs at a Domain's Root
RFC2782 does not prohibit the use of SRV records with those protocols.

In general, it is expected that SRV records will be used by clients
for applications where the relevant protocol specification indicates
that clients should use the SRV record. Such specification MUST
define the symbolic name to be used in the Service field of the SRV
record as described below. It also MUST include security
considerations. Service SRV records SHOULD NOT be used in the absence
    of such specification.
RFC2119 defines 'SHOULD NOT' as follows:

This phrase, or the phrase "NOT RECOMMENDED" mean that
there may exist valid reasons in particular circumstances when the
particular behavior is acceptable or even useful, but the full
implications should be understood and the case carefully weighed
before implementing any behavior described with this label.
Zr40··on [dead]
This title is incorrect. 'Openbaar Ministerie' is the Dutch public prosecutor, not the police.
Zr40··on Keyboard Ghosting Explained
Not true. A USB keyboard must declare the number of simultaneously pressed keys it is able to report. It just happens that the example descriptor included in the USB spec has this value set to 6.
Zr40··on How Jason Bourne Stores His Bitcoin
The cookie attack is an attack against browsers, not against sites. The effect is that the server refuses your request.
Zr40··on Adware vendors buy Chrome Extensions to send ad- and malware-filled updates
Because extensions can provide useful functionality that's not provided by the browser. For instance, ad blocking or developer tools.
Zr40··on Gfycat - Jiffier gifs through HTML5 video conversion
> but OTOH it's fairly lightweight for the browser for simple animation.

Historically, this hasn't been the case. Certain browsers used to process the entire gif up to the current frame when rendering a new frame, causing long gif animations to slow down progressively.

Zr40··on Steam Machine Teardown
Some gamers still prefer PS/2 if given the choice, even though there's little technical advantage. Although their most cited reason (key rollover) isn't valid; the keyboard determines how many simultaneous key presses it will transmit over USB.
Zr40··on How MySQL memory table saved the day
> Varchars take up the space for all the chars defined.

This only applies to memory tables. For non-memory tables, the size of varchar columns depends on the actual string size.

(edited. Thanks for correcting!)

Zr40··on PostgreSQL Exercises
No, it's called PostgreSQL. Some people abbreviate it to Postgres or pg. See also http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/ProjectName.
Zr40··on Someone just made a $147,239,214 Bitcoin transfer
You can't know that for sure. I could pay you 2 BTC by giving the private key to a wallet holding 2 BTC. You could even return change in the same way.

The physical Bitcoins (like those by Casascius) work exactly like this: physical coins containing a private key hidden behind a seal.

Zr40··on 8192+ bit RSA keys in OS X
com.apple.security isn't a file, it's a preferences domain. Preference domains are stored in ~/Library/Preferences/<domain>.plist for per-user domains, and /Library/Preferences/<domain>.plist for system domains. In this case, it's stored in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist.

If a preferences domain doesn't exist (or if the key doesn't exist within the domain), the app or system default is used.

Zr40··on SparkFun's migration from MariaDB to PostgreSQL
Bad execution plans are almost always the result of a missing or incompatible index, bad table statistics (corrected by running ANALYZE) or bad server configuration (corrected by adjusting memory parameters and cost parameters).

The query planner evaluates multiple query plans, and chooses the one with the lowest cost based. If that results in the wrong plan, you should attempt to correct the query planner input (that is, the statistics and the server configuration, and possibly the tables and their indices) so that it can better evaluate the possible query plans.

EXPLAIN is a great tool to debug query plans.

Zr40··on Linux ate my RAM
Actually, purge is completely unrelated to swap. Purge forces disk cache to be flushed to disk, and can be used to approximate a cold disk buffer cache scenario for performance analysis.

Some small amount of swap usage (compared to total RAM) is perfectly normal, by the way. More cache, for instance, is a better use of RAM than avoiding swap usage by keeping never-accessed pages present.

Zr40··on Google Apps drop support for IE9
IE10 functions even when the fallback video driver is being used, which certainly doesn't provide hardware acceleration. Are you really sure DirectX or the graphics driver is the cause of not being able to install IE10?

Also, DirectX isn't a separately updatable component, at least in recent versions of Windows. It gets updated as part of regular Windows updates and service packs. (Some software still uses the DirectX redistributable as part of its installer, but in recent versions of Windows, this only installs an optional part of the DirectX 9 interface library.)

Outdated graphics drivers can't provide features introduced with a newer DirectX version, but they shouldn't prevent you from installing IE10.

Zr40··on Poll: What OS do you prefer for Web Development?
As a Mac user, I actually don't use the menu bar often. Instead, I most often use keyboard shortcuts. When I do use the menu bar, I'm using the Help menu to search for the menu item.

What keyboard usability problems are you referring to? Compared to Windows, I quite like using the Command key instead of the Control key for most keyboard shortcuts (thumb instead of pinky).
