>Your city probably has a free speech zone where protesting is allowed, which is far out of the way so those protests won't have an audience, but that is not where protests occur when they occur.

What a weird thing to say. I don't know whether you live in some totalitarian regime or assume that you do, but I don't. However, I can see it as means of protesting, an we can find examples of it in history and current day, but most graffiti out there is not that at all.

>I think that's very exciting for you

Random online interactions rarely change anyone's opinions, and you don't have to accept my worldview, and neither I need to accept yours. I am just somewhat saddened that there are people who would defend defacing the city like that, but at the same time, I understand that we are byproducts of our environment. I think I should consider myself lucky that I happen to live in a place which I appreciate. It's not that I am incapable of admiring art or loathe graffiti as a style, but, at least based on my experience, most of it are just cases of vandalism. My city actually have places dedicated to graffiti artists, so that they can create whatever they want freely, but I guess that removes at least some of the fun.

>Are you American? Freedom means the ability to do what you want. It doesn't mean owning guns.

No, I am not, and I haven't mentioned guns or even hinted at the topic. Do whatever you want, but trying to purposefully destroy and smear the environment around you and claim it's an expression of freedom is ridiculous. It's just malicious, disgusting behavior that helps no one, serves no cause and has nothing to do with freedom.

ZpJuUuNaQ5··on San Francisco Graffiti
To me personally, it sounds really bizarre. I cannot understand this way of thinking, but I guess it's just a matter of cultural differences.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on San Francisco Graffiti
I think the cultural barrier preventing me from understanding this way of thinking is impenetrable to me. What a strange world, huh?
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on San Francisco Graffiti
>It's a very common form of countercultural resistance and therefore an important relief valve. It's a way for anyone to express themselves on their environment.

So, what are these random scribblers resisting, exactly? It's like saying that defecating on the street is a form of self-expression and "leaving their mark". Even if it is, do we really need to tolerate it?

>Not to mention, it's lovely to be connected to a common thread of humanity over literal millenia.

There is nothing lovely about seeing all this garbage littering the walls of public buildings and historical finds do not justify this behaviour.

However bad thing are or will be, trusting "influencers" is the last thing you should do.

ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Show HN: I quit coding years ago. AI brought me back
I feel the same way. LLMs automate aspects that I enjoy and amplify those that I hate.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Docker.how – Docker command cheat sheet
What bothers me the most about LLM-generated CSS is the inclusion of these long and completely unnecessary transitions. Every single time, it's the transform on hover and opacity+transform on page load. Why? I haven't noticed these patterns that often on popular sites, but for AI-generated UIs this seems to be the default. If you hover on elements and switch pages frequently, these animations become annoying really quickly.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on ASCII Clouds
No idea. I submitted a reinstatement request, but I haven't received any response in the past 4 months.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on ASCII Clouds
Nice. This looks similar to what I have implemented: https://www.npmjs.com/package/asciiground, but I intended it more as a library where a user could program their own patterns by extending the existing systems. Sadly, my GitHub account got flagged, so there is no way to access the repository or GitHub pages for the demo at the moment.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Influencers and OnlyFans models are dominating U.S. O-1 visa requests
Whatever the case may be, this has nothing to do with morals, but rather with classification of it as an "extraordinary" ability. Talking about that, instead of seething and name-calling, you could show us your extraordinary ability to go back to Reddit.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on I rebooted my social life
Posts like these make me question whether I even exist, or at the very least, doubt my humanity.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on LLMs Are Not Fun
>That's bait.

For you, maybe. In my experience, the constant need for babysitting LLMs to avoid the generation of verbose, unmaintainable slop is exhausting and I'd rather do everything myself. Even with all the meticulously detailed instructions, it feels like a slot machine - sometimes you get lucky and the generated code is somewhat usable. Of course, it also depends of the complexity and scope of the project and/or the tasks that you are automating.

ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Autism's confusing cousins
I never understood why people, especially americans, are so hyperfocused on "mental health" and wear their pseudoscientific bullshit diagnoses like medals. I agree that there is a small fraction of people that do have mental issues, but it is very likely that most of the people that encourage "therapy" and yap about "mental health" very likely don't have any meaningful issues worth diagnosing and are just unnecessary burden on the medical system. The term "autism" in itself is so overused nowadays that it doesn't mean absolutely anything anymore, the fact that it doesn't have precise, rigorous definition doesn't help either.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on What OpenAI did when ChatGPT users lost touch with reality
>People opting for unchallenging pseudo-relationships over messy human interaction is part of a larger trend, though.

I don't disagree that some people take AI way too far, but overall, I don't see this as a significant issue. Why must relationships and human interaction be shoved down everyone's throats? People tend to impose their views on what is "right" onto others, whether it concerns religion, politics, appearance, opinions, having children, etc. In the end, it just doesn't matter - choose AI, cats, dogs, family, solitude, life, death, fit in, isolate - it's just a temporary experience. Ultimately, you will die and turn to dust like around 100 billion nameless others.

ZpJuUuNaQ5··on My stages of learning to be a socially normal person
Appreciate the writing and the author's fortitude in achieving their goals. While I never had friends, neither online nor in person, I cannot identify with this at all - it reads like a strange, obsessive seeking of external validation which I have never felt myself. Maybe I am just disinterested in people in general.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Ask HN: How does one stay motivated to grind through LeetCode?
You don't. You need to have a goal and clear understanding about why you are doing what you are doing. This is the same with pretty much all activities that require significant effort - motivation is a brief blip that eventually withers away once you start struggling. What you need is discipline, planning, and regular routine. Plan (allocate some time each day/week) and do this regularly. Can't take it anymore? Make a coffee, take a walk, rest for a little while, take a nap, whatever, and then try again. Motivation is not something that you should be constantly chasing in the first place.

It obviously depends on intensity, and is sometimes described as reverse J-curve[1] relationship. Moderate exercise helps, while intense exercise diminishes these benefits and might also increase mortality risk.

ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Zed is now available on Windows
I tried it for a while. It's okay, I guess. Typing latency is neither an issue nor a bottleneck for me, so personally, I don't see the appeal. Apart from that, it feels lacking and offers nothing else that I don't already get from VS Code. If I really cared about performance, I would use Neovim.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Quantification of fibrinaloid clots in plasma from pediatric Long COVID patients
Similar situation, but I had (and still have) issues with the heart, and not sure whether they were from undiagnosed covid infection (never had typical Covid symptoms, and all tests for it came negative), or some rare complications from the vaccine.

I started having heart flutters a day or two after my shot and had severe fever (I was 25 at the time), but the former never went a way. I brushed it off as a temporary symptom and typical after shot reaction (well, fever was at least). Heart flutters never went away and I didn't go to the doctor for at least a few months, it became so frequent that I could not sleep, exercise or even climb the stairs anymore without heart feeling like it's about to explode out of my chest. Not the high heart rate, but abrupt, irregular vibrations/twitching and sometimes feeling like you get punched in the chest, just from the inside around the heart area. Anyway, it happens frequently and in any situation, even at rest.

Got diagnosed with third degree AV block. The flutters were due to the significant damage to the heart muscle, which caused the failure of the conduction system - signals from the upper chambers did not always reach the lower chambers.

I am not angry at anyone or anything, just disappointed. It would feel a lot easier if it was some obvious bad decision of mine, like drinking, doing drugs, smoking, or being overweight, but I did not nor were any of these things. I still keep categorizing life as "before" and "after".

ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Daniel Kahneman opted for assisted suicide in Switzerland
Of course I don't. Life is a short, temporary experience, and I don't want to spend this time wondering what others think of me. It does not matter at all. I am nothing, just a briefly conscious lump of cells. I will die and turn to dust, just like about 100 billion of others before me. Nothing that I say, think, dream, experience, do, or how I act or look like will ever matter.

I completely agree that the disease is horrible, but your conclusion is bizarre. When you are in that condition, how anyone views you is the least of your worries.

ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Meta-analysis of 2.2M people: Loneliness increases mortality risk by 32%
>Chronic loneliness

Is it generally understood as feeling (being in a particular state of mind) as being lonely or just lacking social interactions in general, regardless of how one feels about it? Those two things, to my understanding, aren't the same. For example, I never had friends, and generally, I despise people. I have no "social life," and I wouldn't even be able to clearly define what it is without googling. If I lost my voice, I wouldn't notice that it happened for about a week. However, I don't feel like I am missing out on anything. Does that increase my mortality risk by over 30% or not? I only skimmed the sources, but may read it later.

ZpJuUuNaQ5··on I built thumbnai.com for a friend, he told me to double down on it
I appreciate the work, and suppose it is indeed useful for creators to gain more views, but as an ordinary YT user, I absolutely hate this. Flashy, oversaturated nonsense that has nothing to do with the video and stupid, surprised open-mouth face expressions are exactly what I don't want to see in video thumbnails.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on Product Hunt is dead
I don't count myself as a Product Hunt audience, but I have visited the site couple, maybe dozens of times. However, it was just brief casual checking to see what's out there. I guess "#1 on Product Hunt" has somehow been burned into my subconscious.
ZpJuUuNaQ5··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
>Killing Front End Innovation

Huh, I wish. This is loosely related, but early in my career I worked in a company where one of the projects I was involved in was a relatively large-scale web platform. The system had quite a lot of interactive UI elements, but for some reason we weren't allowed to use any off-the-shelf UI library/framework like React (it was already around for quite some time), despite presenting arguments countless times on why it would be the better solution and save a huge amount of time.

Instead, we had to use a buggy and incomplete UI library that was built within the company, and the results were as you'd expect. Making changes to the UI was agonizing, the library's behavior and API was inconsistent, components were difficult to reuse, and you had to jump through hoops and monkey-patched nonsense to update the UI. On top of that, nobody worked on fixing the library itself, and eventually the system using it grew so large that making any fixes to the library would break the system and would need a massive amount of time to fix or rewrite all the broken components. The saddest thing was that the UI library itself did not actually do anything "innovative", just some things that are available in countless other UI libraries, but worse.

Sure, maybe it was my technical incompetence and poor decisions, but on the other hand, even then, I knew JS/TS quite well and wasn't one of those people who swear by a particular framework and know nothing else. I worked on other web-based projects before with various technologies and never had that many problems.
