Znafon··on The Uber Bubble
Because when you book a car or ask for food to be delivered of it does not happen you just cancel the transaction and book another one, perhaps on another app. There is not much risk associated to this transaction and this favour the apparition of « competitors » doing the exact same thing.

When you are renting a flat in another town, or country, sometimes weeks or months in advance, the risk is much higher. If upon arrival you discover you have been scammed it has a much higher impact than a delayed meal. This favour a single actor that you can trust (however bad is Airbnb, image what it would like if you had to trust a local actor in a country that you have never been, acting without respecting the regulations…).

This makes the dynamics of those two types of marketplace completely different.

Perhaps some idea and abstractions from Erlang could be interesting to explore in more mainstream languages?
Znafon··on I found a one-char typo in the docs for Python's typing_extensions library
I know that there had been discussion to improve the CLA process for Python but one issue was that previous signed CLA could not be imported so every contributor would have had to sign the CLA again, which for contributors that need approval by their employer’s lawyers can be a multi-month process. Because of this the current process which has been cumbersome has been kept, but I’m sure the discussion can be revived if someone is willing to do the leg work, the migration and figure out the legal implications.

The CLA is also usually not required for trivial fixes like typo but the bot still asks for it, only a maintainer can bypass it and consider whether it is a trivial fix as far as I know.

I don't know S/MIME, why do you need to keep your old certificates?

You can use JSON for your configuration: https://www.terraform.io/docs/language/syntax/json.html !

Is this still working? The certificate is expired.
Znafon··on Mypyc: Compile type-annotated Python to C
I think defining __dict__ explicitly should work.
Znafon··on Pattern matching accepted for Python
> Why not put up an effort on speeding things up, removing the GIL.

You are making it look like there is nobody working on those things but there is actually multiple core devs trying to making Python faster.

Znafon··on How to solve the Secret Santa Problem using graph theory
The Fisher-Yates algorithm has O(n) running time but it is slightly different than what the author suggested, instead of removing the element from the array, you swap it with the last, that way you are sure not to get it again by simply reducing the upper bound of your random function and it's a O(1) operation so the total running time is O(n): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher%E2%80%93Yates_shuffle#T...

I saw this post in ask.
Znafon··on Intentionally Leaking AWS Keys
I don't think they do detection reliably, they have no idea whether it is an actual key or it could be a placeholder used as documentation for example. I don't know the details bit perhaps they just send it to AWS and AWS doesn't tell them whether it is an actual key or not?
Znafon··on Intentionally Leaking AWS Keys
It's actually GitHub that contacts AWS even before the commit finishes being sent to GitHub so it is indeed very fast.
Znafon··on Intentionally Leaking AWS Keys
This is a funny idea, I imagine you could do this with other services as well, for example you could use an API Gateway as long as you give read only keys for API Gateway and Route53?
Znafon··on Parler drops offline after Amazon pulls support
> Child porn is illegal, hate speech (and in lots of places, "incitement") is not.

Isn't "imminent lawless action" the limit of free speech? it seems clear after January 6th that a part of what was promoted on Parler was both imminent and lawless.

Znafon··on Fujifilm Created a Magnetic Tape That Can Store 580 Terabytes
You don't have to do it this way, you can just use encryption at rest with a different key for each user and throw the key when a user ask for deletion of their data. No need to get all the backup back to scrub them one by one.
Znafon··on “To be safe allocate 5 bytes more than you need”
The Pull Request is at https://github.com/DaveGamble/cJSON/pull/146
Znafon··on You don't need no service mesh
I think this misses the point of a service mesh. Yes a library may feat your needs but if you need an old Java application deployed on premise that only has a VPN connection to datacenter A with a private connection to datacenter B a service mesh will help you make everybody talk to each other nicely without to make tricky configuration with NATs, route tables, BGP, etc.

The logging, authentication, circuit breaker, etc. is nice to have on top of that but I don't think it's the main advantage, or at least not the only one.

Znafon··on Sourcehut's Second Year in Alpha
Thanks, last time I tested aerc I couldn't find a way to make it download all my mails locally. Is this possible?
Znafon··on Sourcehut's Second Year in Alpha
Do you have a recommendation for a good GUI mail client?
Znafon··on Sourcehut's Second Year in Alpha
It's not "an abomination of a workflow", and it's very possible for communities to have difficulties in scaling with a mailing list and have a bus factor of 1 despite plenty of movement on the mailing list.

Git also had a git-request-pull command that prepares a mail with the same information that you can find in a pull request on GitHub even before GitHub existed.

There is no "one true way" to Git and if organization to adapt their workflow to their needs they can have issues both with mailing lists and the centralised forge model.

Znafon··on Is a billion dollars worth of server lying on the ground?
Yes, I think the CapEx argument often advanced by the marketing of AWS and C-levels and engineers of large companies moving to the Cloud is just something said to justify the decision and help everybody get on board with it, but I think the CapEx -> OpEx one is fallacious.

There is others reasons for example the flexibility, the managed services, etc. but I don't think this one makes sense.

Znafon··on Travis CI's new pricing plan threw a wrench in my open source works
I don't understand this reaction and the reaction of many people in this thread. To me it looks like choosing beggars, maybe I'm missing something.

Travis-CI was giving a ton of computing power for free, no questions asked. That was incredibly generous but had certainly a gigantic cost and it powered many OSS projects for a long time.

Yet how can we complain that they can throw money around, some says that it will reduce the number of new users that discover the service and the number of paying client in the long run (many are saying this but are not paying users anyway) but it's not like the number of potential clients is unlimited anyway and at what point it becomes to costly to get the last ones.

Why would this be a "private equity" thing, you can't always loose (or invest to get more users) money. Does your company sponsors the infrastructure of that many OSS projects? Would it be willing to cover the costs of all servers used by OSS projects for Travis?

Znafon··on Is a billion dollars worth of server lying on the ground?
Except that nearly all companies greater than a certain size have an engagement with AWS so they shifted CapEx to CapEx.
Znafon··on You might not need to store plaintext email addresses
You could also use convergent encryption (https://www.vaultproject.io/docs/secrets/transit#convergent-...) to do this with only one field.
Znafon··on Restrict Access to your internal websites on AWS with BeyondCorp
The BeyondCorp paper explicitly mentions that the device state is taken into consideration when giving access to a user, i.e. that the device is identified and controlled, not just the user. It seems to me like it is an important part in the BeyondCorp access model, otherwise wouldn't this just be a SSO portal?
Znafon··on Big O, Little N
>You can easily extend Landau's notation to multiple variables [...] O(k log n)

Yes, but the parent wrote O(n, 1) not O(n * 1). Does O(k, log n) exists?

> Sorry, that's not how you would use or define multi-variable Big-O notation, if you want it to make any sense.

What do you mean? If I have f: n -> n and g: n -> 1, can I not say O(f) * O(g) = O(f*g) ? See https://math.stackexchange.com/a/2317054 for an example of demonstration.
