ZeroGravitas··on Elon Musk says saving for retirement is irrelevant: 'It won't matter'
This pairs well with the other current headline about him being recruited by the pentagon to wage a nuclear war.
ZeroGravitas··on Solar panels on land used for biofuels: enough electricity for all cars/trucks
They lead with climate impact but the three main biofuel producers all pushed this as a way to achieve energy independence and to support farmers.

Of course solar achieves both of those goals better too. It reduces fuel imports (and/or leaves more for export) and provides another "crop" that doesn't have income correlated with other produce.

ZeroGravitas··on US prosecutors launch criminal investigation into Federal Reserve chair
Following in the footsteps of other financial powerhouses like Argentina, Russia, Turkey, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

On the other hand, Trump catastrophicly imploding the US economy is one of the likelier good endings to this insanity.

ZeroGravitas··on Let's call a murder a murder
The women he is praising for filming is, according to the current government, committing illegal violence against the ICE agents.

https://reason.com/2026/01/08/you-have-the-right-to-record-i...

> The Trump Administration Says It's Illegal To Record Videos of ICE. Here's What the Law Says.

> Violence is anything that threatens them and their safety, so it is doxing them, it's videotaping them where they're at when they're out on operations," Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said.

So he is right to think she might have been shot for doing this.

edit: note that's a libertarian source. They've always had a strain of civil libertarians on that publication but the comments on the site reveal a lot of libertarians now think it's a good thing that white liberal women are being shot.

ZeroGravitas··on Videos Contradict Trump Administration Account of ICE Shooting in Minneapolis
I'm reminded of a Twitter joke:

> I have a mental illness that makes me think that people will change their minds if presented with correct arguments, appropriate facts and data.

ZeroGravitas··on Using Grok to Avoid Personal Attacks While Correcting Misinformation on X
I've seen the owner of Grok make ad hominem (ad machinam?) attacks when Grok corrects things he would like to be true, so this will likely not last.
ZeroGravitas··on Minneapolis driver shot and killed by ICE
And then when they set up a gofundme Billionaires can crowdfund half the poor to kill the other half.
ZeroGravitas··on Minneapolis driver shot and killed by ICE
Enjoy the outrage while it lasts.

Soon Americans being shot in the face by ICE and framed as terrorists will be as common and accepted as the President talking about invading Canada and Greenland, or launching billion dollar shitcoins, talking about his love letters to dictators, insulting soldiers who died in combat, violent riots overturning elections or openly mocking disabled people etc. etc. etc.

You'll see people in these comments who worked to normalise all those doing the same again.

ZeroGravitas··on Wikipedia Donation Destroyer
If anti-vaccine people such as the developer of this tool liked Wikipedia and thought that donating to it would advance their cause, that would be worrying.

So by trying to undermine these information sources they demonstrate how important they are.

ZeroGravitas··on Stephen Miller Asserts U.S. Has Right to Take Greenland
Given the talk that he might be running Venezuela soon, I wonder if that was inspired either by Maduro doing the same in Venezuela, or worries about him being Maduro'd in retaliation?
ZeroGravitas··on First all-solid-state battery in production vehicles
The slick Steve Jobs / Elizabeth Holmes presentation makes me skeptical, but other than that they are basically describing the general future of batteries and motors, whether or not their specific tech works/scales/meets price expectations.
ZeroGravitas··on Donut Lab – first all-solid-state battery. Production Ready Today
Slightly earlier, and slightly more specific URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46495866
ZeroGravitas··on Venezuela's interim government says it is united behind Maduro
I thought I'd read there was 40 deaths, is there an official source for no casualties?
ZeroGravitas··on How we automated federal retirements
They're still pushing the "underground mine" bullshit too even though the ex-salt mine storage facility has a state of the art audio and video digitisation studio in it.
ZeroGravitas··on In 2026, Will Americans Turn Against Oligarchs?
Musk was still talking about Trillion dollar government fraud on Twitter a few days ago.

He repeatedly claimed fraud as part of DOGE. The 150 year olds claiming Social Security for example.

Just like now, he was bullshitting and didn't care that it wasn't true if it was useful to him.

His allies are pretty much on record saying that too, e.g. that firing staff increased government costs since the same expertise was contracted out at a higher rate, but that is considered a win for them. Which feels like fraud to me.

> DOGE did not find $2T in fraud, but that doesn’t matter, Musk allies say

ZeroGravitas··on China's BYD set to overtake Tesla as top EV seller
Couple of relevant fun facts:

BYD makes twice as many batteries for Tesla cars than Tesla does.

Most Tesla cars are made in China.

ZeroGravitas··on BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal
Not angering the oligarchs who profit from oil appears to be the root cause.

This then flows downstream to inconsistent and patchwork government support for the transition to EVs.

The short term incentives aren't all properly aligned for car makers to fully commit to build EVs and support the supply chain to do that.

ZeroGravitas··on BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal
Selling that many cars despite intense competition at home and trade barriers abroad seems the more natural way to express that story.

They instead focused on how in evil communist China you need to continue to make better cars than rivals in order for your business to succeed and grow.

What a strange system they have over there. If only they were capitalist like the US and being an incumbent connected to the regime was all you needed to keep extracting money from the population despite product stagnation.

ZeroGravitas··on In 2026, Will Americans Turn Against Oligarchs?
I know! Musk still hasn't found that 2 Trillion of fraud and waste he promised and now he's moved onto something else.

Trying to take credit for and simultaneously misrepresent the findings of genuine government auditors while sacking them was too much work apparently.

Now he's trying to do something even scummier with GOP hired fake-influencer propagandists.

When will this outright fraud give us all a rest?

ZeroGravitas··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
So Elon invented selling a slightly more expensive EV in a state with generous government support for this?

A business plan that the real Tesla founders actually came up with because they'd seen Silicon Valley homes with Porsches and Prius parked next to each other and thought they could combine those two things?

ZeroGravitas··on The Worst Thing About Elon Musk Is That He Got Away with All of It
This article is far too positive.

It regularly assumes he tried to do good things and failed.

ZeroGravitas··on US bars 5 Europeans it says pressured tech firms to censor American viewpoints
They cancelled the US Department of Defense's anti-foreign-adversary-disinformation efforts for a specific, not suspicious at all, example.
ZeroGravitas··on Germany Shifts to Nuclear Fusion After Fukushima-Era Fission Policy
It's not clear if you aren't familiar with the political history or if you just disagree that it's a good idea.

Historical context:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energiewende

As to whether it was good idea, a quote from that article:

> The coalition government introduced an intermediate target of a 55–60% share of renewable energy in gross electricity consumption in 2035. The targets were described as "ambitious"

In 2025 they'll be around 56% (and as I said, this is with clear sandbagging by people who are politically opposed to this transition).

And them blazing this trail enabled other nations like Hungary to go from zero to 30% solar in a decade.

ZeroGravitas··on Postponed '60 Minutes' segment on Salvadoran prison is streamed by Canadian news
But her first notable achievement in her career was calling for professors to be disciplined for criticisms of Israel, so that claim to be about free speech was always an obvious lie.

ZeroGravitas··on Postponed '60 Minutes' segment on Salvadoran prison is streamed by Canadian news
She was also installed in her role by Oracle's Larry Ellison and his son, Paramount CEO David Ellison, which gives it extra tech credentials.
ZeroGravitas··on Germany Shifts to Nuclear Fusion After Fukushima-Era Fission Policy
In hindsight switching to renewables from nuclear was a great idea.

It's also obvious in hindsight that politicians on the right have been sabotaging it all along, and despite that it still worked out okay and probably helped save the world.

Imagine the whole government was consistently behind wind, solar, EV, batteries, heat pumps etc. manufacturing and deployment, they'd be more resilient to Russia and better placed to compete with China.

It's notable that the more a German political party supports nuclear, the less they support EVs and heat pumps. Which suggests it's a disingenuous distraction for them.

ZeroGravitas··on US Administration halted largest Offshore Wind project in the U.S.
I think Swedish right-wingers pioneered this particular form of anti-renewable propaganda last year.
ZeroGravitas··on U.S. to drop childhood vaccine recommendations as it looks to Denmark
"Clever" justifications for stupid ideas is a worrying theme in modern US politics.
ZeroGravitas··on After ruining a treasured water resource, Iran is drying up
And coal, gas CCGT and nuclear electricity plants to power them also use water to cool the steam.
ZeroGravitas··on King William's College – Isle of Man "The World's Most Difficult Quiz" [pdf]
From last year's published in the Guardian:

> Editor’s note: the King William’s College quiz has appeared in the Guardian since 1951. The quiz is no longer sat formally; it is sent to the schoolchildren and their families to tackle over the Christmas holiday. So yes, you are allowed to Google – however, the questions are constructed to make that less than straightforward. Answers will appear on the Guardian website on 15 January 2025. Good luck!
