YoyoyoPCP··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
Triumph of the nerds is the reason I work in high tech. RIP to a legend.
YoyoyoPCP··on 'No cash accepted' signs are bad news for unbanked Americans
Dumb guy question: why does the US government not offer all citizens a bank account? Is there some constitutional reason against it?
YoyoyoPCP··on IRS tests free e-filing system that could compete with tax prep giants
I also don't believe the people that say they want a simple tax code. This is the same country that loves coupons, discounts and promo codes. You really think they're gonna give up the tax breaks in the name of elegance and simplicity?
YoyoyoPCP··on Nearly Half of San Franciscans Have Been Victims of Theft, New Poll Says
Fair enough, but I don't think I'm saying anything that hasn't already been pretty abundantly documented over the last several years.
YoyoyoPCP··on Nearly Half of San Franciscans Have Been Victims of Theft, New Poll Says
Correct. Absolutely devastating to small business owners.

I've heard stories that SF is so inundated with car theft that it has created a portal that automatically approves car break in claims for insurance.

San Francisco has its heart in the right place and is struggling to grapple with the reality that lax drug laws invites the wrong kind of people to the city.
YoyoyoPCP··on OP-1 field
The OP-1 has been the single most inspiring tool I've had in a decade. Every other sampler I've bought has always failed to reliably draw me in.

There is no putting a price on creativity. Sure, the competition can compete on specs and price, but they never seem to get me to want to turn them on like the OP-1.

Just my opinion of course. But it is already a classic at this point and is deserving of respect.

YoyoyoPCP··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
Prop 47 misled the public and needs to be repealed.
YoyoyoPCP··on The Fall of Silicon Valley
Reminds me of this quote from Michael S. Malone in The Valley of Heart's Delight (2002)

> When will it end? I knowingly predicted Silicon Valley's imminent demise in 1980, 1985, 1989, and 1994. Eventually, I learned my lesson. The rest of the media world obviously has not--regularly indulging in yet another paroxysm of features about how the Valley is losing its crown to Austin, Orange County, Bangalore, even Boise.

> Perhaps. All I know is just months after the last time I predicted the Valley's end, I found myself regularly having lunch in a Chinese restuartant in Campbell with two young entrepreneurs... The company they were building was called Ebay.

YoyoyoPCP··on A concise guide to the latest Go generics draft design
Wish comparable supported all of the compare operators. Otherwise, this looks like a nice design by the Go team!
YoyoyoPCP··on A Brief History of California’s Housing Crisis
Another fun feature of Prop 13 is the corporate landlords' ability to avoid the "changing hands" reset of the property tax:

YoyoyoPCP··on Facebook showed me my data is everywhere and I have absolute no control over it
At what point does the end user feel accountability for giving a free service all of their information? I get that they employ various unsavory tactics (especially on mobile), but remember that this _is_ the Internet after all.
YoyoyoPCP··on Uber drivers “employees” for unemployment purposes, NY labor board says
Sure! At least it would be a clear, defined system.
YoyoyoPCP··on Uber drivers “employees” for unemployment purposes, NY labor board says
Apologies, I must have worded that too vaguely. I meant the state should minimally pay people the amount they believe to be a livable wage.
YoyoyoPCP··on Uber drivers “employees” for unemployment purposes, NY labor board says
I find it so funny when the state/government requires businesses to compensate people in some minimal way. If you think people need X dollars or Y benefits to live a comfortable life, why don't you give it to them?

YoyoyoPCP··on Nutrition offers its resignation, and the reply
I was struck by how I started feeling after drinking Diet Coke. It's a rather indescribable feeling of discomfort afterward. The studies about its harmful effects are of no surprise to me.

Same with Ramen. I even experience muscle aching at times after eating it. It's a shame because I find it so tasty!

YoyoyoPCP··on Nutrition offers its resignation, and the reply
As a former smoker, I knew exactly how bad it was for me minutes after the initial high. Smoking is a perfect example, really.
YoyoyoPCP··on Nutrition offers its resignation, and the reply
I feel like I know when I've eaten something unhealthful. Even feeling it in my burping afterwards feels like an indicator to me. I don't generally feel this way after a salad or drinking water.
YoyoyoPCP··on Nutrition offers its resignation, and the reply
My general philosophy about nutrition is simply to listen to my own body. As in: how does this meal that I just ate or drink that I just drank make me feel? I've noticed with certain foods, I have strange feelings after eating them, so I'll tend to stay away from eating them regularly or even at all.

I'm not sure if there's any merit to this way of considering my diet, but it feels like the most sensible approach towards deciding what I should or shouldn't eat.

YoyoyoPCP··on Apple Music now has 38M paid members
Personally, this is exactly why Google Play is the only option for me. I would gladly move back to Spotify should they offer that feature.
