Yossarrian22··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
The unspoken part may be “if I was 10 years younger”, I knew one of the engineers who worked on the engines he’s still alive but almost a 100, I don’t think he’s up to the challenge of this particular boondoggle
Yossarrian22··on Intellectuals Are Fucking Idiots
Broadly true but in a marketplace overrun with all sorts of ideas filtering out people who engage in acts or behavior you find abhorrent can be a useful filter for ideas to consider.

Or to put it another way, have you sat through a timeshare pitch to evaluate if the idea is good or bad?

Yossarrian22··on Finally, A True Blue Rose Exists
Immediately what I thought of
Yossarrian22··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell

Yossarrian22··on OpenAI's Sam Altman to Brief UN Security Council Next Week
What does AGI mean is probably the sticking point for most. I'm inclined to call it AGI if they can create something currently matching SOTA where there is no difference between training and inference time, i.e. it can continuously learn. Without the model collapsing.
Yossarrian22··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
More like if it’s a desire to have a consensual non-consensual encounter, a sort of kayfabe at the least
Yossarrian22··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
Many rock climbers have felt the "call of the void" when climbing, I've felt it myself on a multi-pitch once, I'd hardly claim they are suicidal or have suicidal ideations and would not identify myself as either. I think there needs to be a certain level of intention to make the fantasy reality for it to be a kink.
Yossarrian22··on How, Exactly, Could A.I. Kill Us?
You'd have mass casualties on a hitherto unseen scale, but hardly an extinction
Yossarrian22··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
Itself in reaction to someone wielding a big rock
Yossarrian22··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?

It’s fine to be Howard Roark on a commission or pet project by yourself or a small team, but not when working on a subdivision with many hands touching it
Yossarrian22··on AI 2040 and the cult of intelligence
That was basically stuxnet
Yossarrian22··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
Thinking of past notable Goliaths: Ma Bell has been reconstituting herself from the split apart companies, IBM and GE are… alive, and Edison Illuminating Company and Carnegie Steel are alive in successor companies.
Yossarrian22··on Building a real-time AI tutor for 5-year-olds
What does teach how to use AI mean for grade schoolers? It’s a search engine for those purposes, the lesson is a blend of the Google and Wikipedia lessons.
Yossarrian22··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
How? I thought hospital AC had the dual role of air filtration to reduce spread of bacteria and viruses
Yossarrian22··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
>require sessions with a tutoring AI and grade the level of comprehension exhibited.

What fresh hell is this?

Yossarrian22··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
I recommend reading this article, there is a very good reason that's not an option for this professor.
Yossarrian22··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
In comparison to textbooks or tuition even a $1000 a month could be palatable
Yossarrian22··on Job application asked for my SAT scores
I've hired dozens of people and have never done that.
Yossarrian22··on Job application asked for my SAT scores
I didn't take the SATs in the 80s but in 00s I don't remember any of the concepts translating well to understanding calculus or statistics and I scored well enough it gave me a free ride to college (well that was the PSAT but it was in line with my SAT score). If they wanted to test that they should have tailored an exam similar to my college when assessing my math capability.

Yossarrian22··on A short history of Cerro Torre, the most controversial mountain (2012)
I can't find many details, but I had heard Hayden's name before, he sadly died of suicide after losing his partner in an avalanche ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayden_Kennedy_(climber) ). Jason Kruk appears to still be climbing to this day, so neither appeared to wind up in significant legal trouble after rightly or wrongly damaging a tourist destination.
Yossarrian22··on Python 3.14 garbage collection rigamarole
I don’t think there is still a Python 2 split, the lack of security updates being a concern
Yossarrian22··on The weird, wild story of humanity's obsession with gold
Depending on the timeframe I think palladium has traded higher per oz at times
Yossarrian22··on The weird, wild story of humanity's obsession with gold
Any war that has the USD no longer be accepted has significant existential risk, and besides if things devolve that much you should be worrying about any entity holding the gold for you or someone killing you for the gold you personally hold.
