YokoZar··on You have reached the end of the internet (2006)
The developers never thought you'd make it this far.
YokoZar··on You have reached the end of the internet (2006)
The Internet is a mere 23 PiB according to the graphic. These days you can fit that on just a few racks.
YokoZar··on Over-regulation is doubling the cost
As the article points out, there is a safety cost from over-regulation. The impact on air quality from not allowing the new technology quickly enough is very real.

YokoZar··on First recording of a dying human brain shows waves similar to memory flashbacks (2022)
"further aggression limited to those who have not accepted their dominance" doesn't sound anything at all like "turning around" to me.
YokoZar··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Are you asserting that Rogers employees needed documentation to know that Rogers Wireless runs on Rogers systems?
YokoZar··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
That's kind of a weird ops story, since SRE 101 for oncall is to not rely on the system you're oncall for to resolve outages in it. This means if you're oncall for communications of some kind, you must have some other independent means of reaching eachother (even if it's a competitor phone network)

When interest rates were particularly low years ago, we saw a large number of companies issuing bonds and then using the money to just do stock buybacks.

The claim isn't that your saying no to fulfilling orders, it's that your saying no to giving them a discount.
YokoZar··on What Americans die from vs. what the news reports on
While it's true that preventing cancer means you're likely to die in a few years of heart disease, and preventing heart disease means you're likely to die in a few years of cancer, solving both will add dramatically more than both effects combined to both life and healthspan.

Those really are the big two - as the graphs in the article show, the next biggest things are much smaller and much less likely to get you, which means you live a lot longer and healthier.

YokoZar··on Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?
> I’ve had this account for over 20 years and never had any issues before.

"Aged" accounts are a thing you can buy on the black market, as well as hacked accounts of users with long chains of legitimate activity. It's not as strong of an anti-fraud signal as you might think.

YokoZar··on Find SF parking cops
It's San Francisco, parking legally generally requires replacing at least one window.
YokoZar··on The issue of anti-cheat on Linux (2024)
Compare: "I still get spam, therefore all these anti-spam measures are worthless"

It is absolutely the case that there would be more cheating if we turned off the only partially effective systems. We know this because they are regularly stopping and banning people!

YokoZar··on Ozempic shows anti-aging effects in trial
It varies. People are often thinner in their twenties than their thirties and forties. If you browse some before and after pictures the ones who have had their skin tighten tend to look younger for that reason alone.
YokoZar··on Vibe code is legacy code
Just because it's an easy hack doesn't mean it isn't one. It's still lockpicking when it's MasterLock.
YokoZar··on Vibe code is legacy code
If you were a criminal trolling the Internet for vulnerable servers and found stripe keys... would your first instinct be to refund customers rather than do some other sort of crime? Like what's the motivation you envision here?
YokoZar··on There are no new ideas in AI only new datasets
I wonder if this is a case of overfitting from allowing the model to grow too large, and if you might cajole it into learning more generic heuristics by putting some constraints on it.

It sounds like the "best" AI without constraint would just be something like a replay of a record speedrun rather than a smaller set of heuristics of getting through a game, though the latter is clearly much more important with unseen content.

YokoZar··on Games run faster on SteamOS than Windows 11, Ars testing finds
The answer is pretty simple here - hire CodeWeavers to work on supporting your game in Proton/Wine rather than some other porting shop doing an old rewrite-style port.
YokoZar··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
How can you know if you're a good driver in an emergency situation? We don't exactly get a lot of practice.
YokoZar··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
Are you asserting that older roofers are in fact killing other people by falling on top of them?

If not, I think you may have missed the point that licensing is to protect others rather than the driver/roofer themselves.

YokoZar··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
Healthspan in Denmark, who just raised the retirement age, went up from 67.6 to 71.0 from 2000-2019. (+3.4 years) https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/healthy-life-expectancy-a...

Contrast this with Denmark's lifespan growth over the same period, of 76.8 to 81.4 (+4.6 years) https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/life-expectancy?time=2000...

So from the data, prior to covid-19 Danes had gained about 3 and a half years of healthy life, and an additional year of unhealthy life.

It makes sense that Healthspan and lifespan are well-correlated, as most of the ways we have of extending lifespan do so in a way that makes you clearly healthier (such as preventing chronic diseases).

That said, it is true there is a bit of an increasing gap. This isn't just in Denmark, it's global - lifespan rose by 6.4 years from 2000-2019 while healthspan only increased 5.3 years. https://www.who.int/data/gho/data/themes/mortality-and-globa...

YokoZar··on Google to back three new nuclear projects
If your worry is volcanoes, geothermal power can remove energy from them before they explode. On a sufficient scale they could even prevent them.
YokoZar··on New Study: Waymo is reducing serious crashes and making streets safer
Then why not offer a "dash-cam discount" to the subset of customers that the insurer believes _are_ better drivers, like those with a long history of having no accidents or tickets and tons of miles?
YokoZar··on When I converted my home from gas to electric my utility bills nearly doubled
The story is very likely to be true, it's just stupid
YokoZar··on When I converted my home from gas to electric my utility bills nearly doubled
Hidden behind all these words, the guy installs an air conditioner and then starts using it frequently and then complains that his energy usage is higher than before when he didn't have an air conditioner.

Using a heat pump in cooling + heating mode is not a drop-in replacement for a furnace like the author seems to imply, it's also an AC that comes along for the ride!

YokoZar··on Tesla Sales Fall Off a Cliff Globally, Including Germany, Australia, and China
Without a strong theory for why anti-Elon sentiment can't get worse, it's quite plausible we haven't actually hit the "peak" of it.

Personally I think it quite likely that Musk will catch significant blame for whatever bad things related to American government happen in the coming year, deserved or otherwise.

YokoZar··on Tesla gets more than 20% of parts from Mexico, it will be affected by tariffs
The simple answer is because waivers are at the discretion of the administration.
YokoZar··on James Harrison, whose blood donations saved >2M babies, has died
Those tests are faster now, however what remains entirely untested is simple sickness like colds. That's why you're supposed to call them if you get a cold within a few days of donating, they have no other way of knowing.
YokoZar··on GLP-1 drugs: An economic disruptor? (2024)
I think the most likely political effect is from media consumption. There have been anecdotal reports of the drug helping people avoid doomscrolling compulsions, which likely means less exposure to various political social media.
