YeBanKo··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
Yeah, and if you did not read T&S and now going to become a part of human centipede, that’s on you. I mean, how hard can it be to read a 22 page legalese, before going through a sign up flow, that was heavily optimized to increase conversion?
YeBanKo··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
Should we allow cars without seatbelt? Everyone knows cars with seatbelts are safer. If consumers don’t like it, they can just choose to buy the ones with seatbelts.
YeBanKo··on Apple declares last MacBook Pro with an optical drive obsolete
Why though? Audio jack delivers pretty much all you need functionality for headphones and plenty of existing hardware. iPod Shuffle 3d gen was tiny, had only 3.5mm for data transfer and charging.

They remove headphone jack in iPhone 7 and added USB-C in iPhone 15. So for almost a decade the only option was proprietary lighting or bluetooth, probably resulted in a significant amount of e-waste.

YeBanKo··on Elon Musk's $55B Tesla Pay Package Voided by Judge
They did. Board approved, shareholders approved, the company hit the milestones.
YeBanKo··on Elon Musk's $55B Tesla Pay Package Voided by Judge
They did represent the shareholder interest. This compensation deal delivered a crazy increase in company valuation. Tesla went from selling 200k vehicles to selling over 1M.
YeBanKo··on Elon Musk's $55B Tesla Pay Package Voided by Judge
The plan targets not that ambitious? $60B to $650B to get the full package in how many years? If the committee was his mom and his brother %79 would have voted yes. One very small shareholder and a judge with bias overrule the majority of shareholder, trying to wrap it into a legal argument.
YeBanKo··on Covid Test Data Breach: 1.3M Patient Records Exposed Online
Isn’t it almost, like, fiduciary duty to the public to disclose what is broken?
YeBanKo··on Elon Musk's $55B Tesla Pay Package Voided by Judge
Did it have a material change on the outcome of the vote? Even if the committee was designated as not independent and fully biased, the board went alone with it and the shareholder approved. The deal was clear – Tesla hits very ambitious goals, Musk gets crazy amount of money. The fact that a judge can come in and completely reverse such a decision is mind blowing and seems more like a judicial activism.

I am surprised there isn’t some law in NL that would allow you to expose it either to the public or maybe at least to MPs and not be bound by NDA.

YeBanKo··on Americans are spending billions on stuff they forget to cancel
My solution is to try to subscribe through Apple as much as possible, even if it's more expensive. Unified interface, always can cancel online and I think they are required to let you use it until the end of the billing cycle if you have been charged. Not always possible, but when it is, it's often worth it.
YeBanKo··on Americans are spending billions on stuff they forget to cancel
It's bizarre to me that some people think that American's are somehow more stupid or gullible than other nations. Lots and lots of capital was spent to make sure that Americans are conditioned to spend as much and as frictionless as possible. And now they do and regulation cannot catch up.

> retirement savings, not paying random fees, not paying interest, moving spare money to investment accounts every month, rebalancing your investments every quarter, negotiating rents, negotiating your salary.

Where else do people need to actively manage their pension accounts like in the US? If your employer does not provide a decent 401k they trying to create a solid retirement investment account is an uphill challenge. In most other places it's simply a tax into a pension fund.

> not paying random fees There is very little price transparency. Random fees are typically not random, but hidden. You can't book a rental car online without being hit with some municipal tax or other surcharge at the counter. In SF a health surcharge often added to the bill on top tax. It makes no fucking sense that it is not a part of the price or part of the sales tax. Cellular carriers and ISPs know exactly how much you gonna be paying but will bend backwards to make sure you don't know it until very end.

You are right that basic financial discipline is a personal responsibility, but removing the asymmetry in the relationship between large businesses and consumers is on the government and legal system.

YeBanKo··on Judge blocks JetBlue from acquiring Spirit Airlines
And of course such a thing could have happen only with Spirit, right? Could not be any other airline. Like United would never cancel a flight without an ample notice and helpful customer success agents rebooking you trip hassle free.
YeBanKo··on FedEx launches new e-commerce platform
I almost stopped shopping at Amazon. There is very little reason left. It is filled with no-name crap by companies with auto generated names. I might as well buy it from Aliexpress or Temu, same crap but at a fraction of a cost and the latter is really aggressive about cheap shipping.

For something more serious either buy directly from the brand, or from Costco, Target, Walmart, HomeDepot, BedBath&Beyond, BestBuy, Macy's, publisher's website, some specialized hardware, electronics or hobby shops. There is still a limited number of things where Amazon beats others, but their quality went down, and hassle free return is not hassle free anymore.

On top of that, they exhibit highly unethical behavior when it comes to counterfeit books. Here is a good thread by François Chollet about his book: https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1550930876183166976. The main takeaway is this:

Q: What is Amazon doing about it?
A: Nothing. We've notified them multiple times, nothing happened. The fraudulent sellers have been in activity for years. The issue affects ~100% of Amazon sales of the book since March or April. That's because, amazingly, since fraudsters are claiming to have inventory, Amazon has stopped carrying its own inventory for the book (i.e. it has stopped ordering new copies from the publisher).

This is mind blowing to me, that they are still in the business of selling books. And they did not really solve last mile delivery. Yeah, it is still faster, but I can wait for my sneakers for 5 days, instead of 2-3 and many retail chains can now delivery something to you in 3-5 biz days and can beat Amazon on return policy or warranty. It's odd that market forces aren't correcting this for Amazon.
YeBanKo··on Zeekr launches 007 sedan for under $30K, 540 mile range, over 50k pre-orders
Lol you overanalyzed it. I fat-fingered in mobile. U is next to i and unlike Nissan or Toyota, my swipe keyboard does not recognize Huawei yet.
YeBanKo··on Zeekr launches 007 sedan for under $30K, 540 mile range, over 50k pre-orders
It’s only bad if you aren’t used to it. When Japanese brands tried to break into automotive world, they sounded weird too. Xiomi and Hiawei don’t sound too different to Samsung and Nokia these days.
YeBanKo··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
The article seems to be misleading a little, because it was not 10 min in total.

Lufthansa asked for ILS, was put on hold for 20 min, then ATC promised another 10 minutes, and then 14 more min passed and this is when the pilot got frustrated.

YeBanKo··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
Maybe the reason why Lufthansa does not allow visual approach at SFO at night, could be after the Air Canada near miss.

> The NTSB determined the probable cause was the Air Canada flight crew's confusion of the runway with the parallel taxiway, with contributing causes including the crew's failure to use the instrument landing system (ILS), as well as pilot fatigue.

FAA changed the rules for SFO and made visual approaches forbidden at night "when an adjacent parallel runway is closed" [2]. Maybe Lufthansa plays it safe and requires ILS for all long haul night landings.

YeBanKo··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
Pilots can be d*cks, but recently there was a string of ATC related incidents, where ATC show questionable judgment and become too "moody" too soon. Here is another example: https://twitter.com/jasonrosewell/status/1733645088473989245 JBU going too slow, instead of assigning a new speed and then scolding the pilot, ATC starts giving the attitude before telling him what he wants.
YeBanKo··on Chris Cuomo Monologue after private screening of the raw footage of October 7th
They had multiple opportunities to establish a state. In fact Gaza was a state with insane financial support from all over the world, probably one of the highest per capita aid recipient in the world from governments and private donors, including Israelis.

YeBanKo··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
Al Jazeera is not an unbiased source and it a one sided view, yet it made it to the top. It has nothing to do with tech. What I have not seen made it this far: * Stories documenting intentional atrocities against Israeli civilians.

* Vile propaganda calling for violence against Jews and Israeli, plentifully available on everywhere.

* Stories about how Hamas still were firing rockets into Israel, while complaining that Gaza needs fuel, food, etc.

* Mind blowing testimonies in Congress by the heads of some of the most prestigious universities in the world, where they said that it depends on the context if calling for genocide of Jewish is a violation of the code. Their hypocrisy has been exposed. Their academic excellence has been reasonable questioned. This is far more relevant to the tech, and yet, it gained very little traction, though it is very relevant to tech sector.

* Ukraine has been pummeled by Russia continuously for more than a year. Everything from killing civilians, to destruction of critical infrastructure, descrying schools, murdering and tortureiung civilians and POWs, to hacking Ukrainian IT infrastructure, yet the highest rated submission about massacre in Bucha gained 164 points with 100 comments.

The article makes multiple very strong claims about kids being killed by an Israeli sniper, soldiers with the American accent and Biden's sanction genocide. This is not a journalism.

Btw, this is Al Jazeera's guide to Hamas that they published on Oct 8th, 2023: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/10/8/what-is-the-group-h.... By this time some Telegram channels had already been flooded with videos of Israeli civilians murdered, mutilated and paraded among cheering Gazan civilians.

Does this unorganized corner of economy really need to be digitalized?

I assume that it is organized well enough, maybe just not in a conventional western way.

YeBanKo··on The pro-Israel information war
For someone, who is coming from Europe it strange, that you did not notice a slow, but steady rise in right politics in Europe, but was very quick to notice the US bias.
YeBanKo··on The pro-Israel information war
This article made it to front with 297 pts and generally it negative towards Israel. I don't think any of the articles about Hamas atrocities and their use of social media made to cause panic and fear made it that far on HN.

Back in Oct about a week after the attack Bloomberg 's reporting on the attack and the beginning of the ended up being flagged on NH and only has 23pts: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37910148

It seems that anti-Israel propaganda is way more successful than this pro-Israel information war.

I wish there was someone else interviewing Musk. It could have been much more colorful and even more emotional. Like him or not, but Musk is eccentric and it could have been a great show.
YeBanKo··on Writing documentation for your house
This kind of mindset is why many parks and landmark exist, in the US and Europe. Someone owned a land or a castle, etc and then donated or sold it with strings attached to keep its purpose. Muir Woods is one example, private purchase with the intent to preserve it.
