YawningAngel··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
We have had several serious nuclear incidents and none have destroyed either a continent or the people on it
YawningAngel··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
You don't need verifiers. I interviewed at R3 (now Onyx) in JP Morgan and my take on the business was that it's more of a distributed ledger than a blockchain
YawningAngel··on The FIPS 140-3 Go Cryptographic Module
Not really. It isn't hard to use FIPS validated software, it's just annoying to do because most libraries you would want to use aren't FIPS compliant by default for good reasons. If you can get a government contract in the first place you are already administratively competent enough to use FIPS.
YawningAngel··on The Mystery of People Who Speak Languages
I don't think anyone is able to learn many languages very easily. If you want to have meaningful discussions in a language you need a vocabulary on the order of 5-10k words depending on the subject and how much exposure you have, which is a cool year of study for even the fastest learners and more akin to 2-3 for us mere mortals.

Most cases of people speaking 10+ languages lean heavily on speaking many closely related languages in a family, which most people already cope with pretty well.

YawningAngel··on Aging-related inflammation is not universal across human populations

YawningAngel··on What Happens When Hertz's AI Scanner Finds Damage on Your Rental
I agree that the UK also fucked this up royally. I don't think this excuses either jurisdiction. In both cases the legal system failed to robustly scrutinise the claims being made before depriving people of their liberty, and that is wholly unacceptable.
YawningAngel··on What Happens When Hertz's AI Scanner Finds Damage on Your Rental
It sounds like the real damage here was done by US law enforcement. Not to excuse Hertz
YawningAngel··on Spaced repetition systems have gotten better
Yomitan (https://yomitan.wiki/) does this
YawningAngel··on Deadly Screwworm Parasite's Comeback Threatens Texas Cattle, US Beef Supply
We have decided, we elected a government and had it pass food safety laws.
YawningAngel··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
A bunch of potential customers will buy at 5$ but not at 15$ so the seller will lose sales and hence money
YawningAngel··on France's new high-speed train has Americans asking: Why can't we have that?
I think it's a pretty reasonable one, no? The "of" is not literal but I would struggle to translate better
YawningAngel··on Self-Driving Teslas Are Fatally Rear-Ending Motorcyclists More Than Any Other
The responsibility does not rest solely with the person behind the wheel. Tesla know or should know how people use this system, and engineer it such that it doesn't kill people when the end user does what they are foreseeably going to do.
YawningAngel··on Nevada Court Shuts Down Police Use of Federal Loophole for Civil Forfeiture
It might be naive, but I don't think it's suspicious to be forthright with the police
YawningAngel··on Three-quarters of the land is drying out, 'redefining life on Earth'
Until we demonstrate the ability to actually perform meaningful feats of geoengineering and the sustained willingness to commit trillions of dollars to it, this proposal is basically science fiction
YawningAngel··on Show HN: Get e-signatures & pay per signed doc
Shouldn't it be possible to use a Merkle tree or similar structure to allow signature chains?
YawningAngel··on Our muscles will atrophy as we climb the Kardashev Scale
Those are really unpleasant and dangerous to take and basically not an option for half the population though
YawningAngel··on Scrabble star wins Spanish world title despite not speaking Spanish
Depends which language learners. There are people who can learn 50 new words a day for months, but those people are rare and there feats are probably not replicable for most of us.

https://isaak.net/mandarin/ is an example

edit: Isaak is great, but it was 22 words per day not 50

YawningAngel··on Hacking 700M Electronic Arts accounts
"Impossible" tends in my experience to be a bureaucratic euphemism for "we don't want to bother".
YawningAngel··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
There are lots of instances in which it is in fact your responsibility to pay the staff and if you choose to ignore that fact and stiff them that's on you
YawningAngel··on What docs-as-code means
Lots of people, myself included, read documentation.
YawningAngel··on How London's Crystal Palace was built so quickly
While the above poster is a little overenthusiastic, there is no judicial review of acts of Parliament. Judicial review seeks to challenge whether a public body reached a decision lawfully, and acts of Parliament are always lawful provided they are passed in the property manner

YawningAngel··on Germans decry influence of English as 'idiot's apostrophe' gets approval
It's not a conjugation issue. "Champagne" is letter-for-letter identical in both languages, but pronounced differently for phonotactic reasons
YawningAngel··on Brazilian Electric "Suicide" Shower Heads [video]
It refers to a design commonly used in South America where a live wire is run to the shower head and used to heat water just before it is expelled
YawningAngel··on DOJ accuses Visa of monopoly that affects price of 'nearly everything’
You can't process a Mastercard transaction over Visanet even if you wanted to: * The network won't know who to route the BIN range to * Even if it did, they may not be connected * Visa and Mastercard, although very similar, put different pieces of data in different places and have different business rules, so you're not necessarily going to have the information you need to process a transaction where you expect to find it nor is your processing of that transaction necessarily acceptable to Visanet. * Visa doesn't know Mastercard's PEK, so they cannot encrypt the PIN as the issuer would expect it even if they wanted to * The EMV crypto might not work, although I'm not sure

These are just the problems that occur to me off the top of my head. They are solveable, but it would require a decade-long regulatory commitment with serious weight behind it.

YawningAngel··on Halide rejected from App Store because it doesn't explain why it takes photos
I think for 30% of my revenue I'd expect reviewers to find the time to use the full context of the app. That may not be realistic for every app on the app store, but it is reasonable for apps with tens of thousands of reviews and hundreds of thousands (at least) in revenue.
YawningAngel··on `Decimal(sign:exponent:significand:)` causes unexpected sign
At some point bugs become expected behaviour
YawningAngel··on The muscular imagination of Iain M. Banks: a future you might want
The fact that the Culture was not only willing to use very powerful general AI but allow it to run the entire civilisation, whereas the Idirans banned it, might have been a factor. No matter how smart Idirans might be presumably Minds would have a significant edge
YawningAngel··on Effects of Gen AI on High Skilled Work: Experiments with Software Developers
I know plenty about IAM and card issuance, but I don't back myself to compete with Ping or Marqeta
YawningAngel··on Finding a therapist who takes your insurance can be nearly impossible
It's also country specific. HMRC in the UK are pieces of shit I wouldn't scrape off my shoe
YawningAngel··on I lost my Google Play dev account
They are bad at telling people what the problem is and the behaviour they complain about is very reasonable. Google's own YouTube app, for example, does exactly this - it prevents the screen from timing out and sleeping.
