You can die of bad hygiene.

Ok, you can die because of religion too, in many, many countries.

But I guess it's not a good thing, no ?

Xoros··on How to Get 100/100 Google Page Speed Score with Middleman and Nginx
That's something that really astounds me with this async thing.

Why on earth when they introduced it they didn't add a way to tell the browser the order of execution ? Or may be it exists and I haven't heard about it ?

Is it mining or something ?

Xoros··on Rubyist makes some Python code 5x Faster
The board contains only binary values. So why not use binary comparisons in integers ?

For any row, you test the row value & the current col and have your answer.

Xoros··on Delete your Code
I used to do that (and there are out there many commented lines on old projects that are still active).

Now, I backup the source file somewhere for archive, run multiple tests on the new code, and make an obligation for me to deliver a cleaned source file, with no other comments than the one needed.

It's more clear when you go back to your code to not be distracted by old thoughts.

Xoros··on The Insecure Developer
Or maybe it means that he was not "good enough" for the multiple technologies they use. Like just in one language but not all they use.

Pretty dumb at the end if you ask me.

Xoros··on The Insecure Developer
Isn't the point of an internship to continue your formation ? How comes companies making the same tests as for recruiting for real jobs ?

"Hi, we are not going to pay you, or not very much, but please be at the same level as senior that are already working for us"

I had interns back in the day I had an office (and not working from home) and I always made them work on basic tasks under my supervision. Once I had one woman who was very good, and she worked on a website that ended in production, but most of the time the purpose was to work on internal projects that can be used even if not perfectly polished. You know, stuff you always say you're going to do some day, but you don't.

The advantages were on both sides. They learned real life cases, under my supervision, and I had the tools I didn't.

Disclaimer : I'm French so maybe my example is not relevant.

Xoros··on Is she Photoshopped? In France, they now have to tell you
> It's no secret that images of models are often retouched

Well it's not a secret, but it's not obvious for most teenagers. And may be not either for people without high degrees education.

A lot of people, and I suppose not only in France, are not at peace with their body shape, even if they're not obese nor anorexic. Been exposed to not really existing bodies images can be painful for self esteem.

Of course, computer modified photos are recent, but fashion already used lightning and tricking exposure when producing photos from film since, well, the fashion press exists I guess.

Xoros··on Post a boarding pass on Facebook, get your account stolen
> Do you really believe FB should be the arbiter of what incidental information their users's pictures can and can not convey?

Aren't they already do it for other stuff they don't want to see online ?

Surely a nipple isn't a barcode and legal implication aren't the same. And people sharing personal stuff ARE responsible for sharing those stuff.

So I guess it shows us again that FB is not our friend :)

Xoros··on How Bodega typifies Silicon Valley’s cultural ignorance
Well, I think nobody will force anyone to use those vending machines instead of going to their corner store.

If people do it, maybe it's because they don't feel this family thing ? So does it matter after all ?

Not supporting the vending machines here, just interrogating you :-)

Xoros··on How Bodega typifies Silicon Valley’s cultural ignorance
There was an episode on The Soprano (no mafia/pizza pun intended :-D) where Tony tried to visit a prostitute he was "in love" with.

She was not there, but her roommate, also a prostitute, from Russia (or an alike country I don't remember), with one fake leg, was.

As he was complaining how miserable he was, she starts lecturing him of how Americans people have stopped having real issues, or living in life threatening situations, and so they invents themselves new ones which looks ridiculous for people coming from less developed countries.

For me it's exactly that.

And don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly aware that there are people in deep trouble in America, homeless or not wealthy enough to treat nasty diseases right.

And this is a first world problem you can also witness in some European countries too. Or cities, not necessarily while countries.

It's like we, humans, cannot bare to go through life being just happy.

Xoros··on In an 8-Hour Day, the Average Worker Is Productive for 2 Hours and 53 Minutes
I remember long ago, working on a security job to pay my studies (in France, so not for tuition but for everyday life).

I was on a semi public bus company, in charge of opening secured doors in the morning. The front hostess arrived and stated "Ah ! The newspaper ! It's the first task of the morning !"

Well, it was not, because she made her coffee first :-)

Xoros··on Safari no longer supported by Spotify
So if I get it correct, Apple stated years ago that Flash wouldn't be support anymore on their products (then others followed).

So Spotify, due to the end of Flash player moved to HTML5 player.

And then the only browser which need a flash player is Apple Safari ?

Oh, the irony :-)

Xoros··on Why do we keep using Facebook?
I use Facebook essentially as a RSS feed for bands I like since a concert I missed of one of my favorite band in 2007. They were playing in my town and I wasn't aware of it. Since then they split so I'll never see them live.

So I started subscribing on my bands Facebook pages to never miss anything again.

Also using it to comment sometimes.

Xoros··on How to Live Without Google
Yes, I know they stated that when it cames on the iPhone 5 [0]. So they probably not. But they were (and perhaps still are ?) also part of PRISM. So why not be a little paranoid

But I admit my conspiracy theory assumption was written as a statement, sorry about that !

Xoros··on How to conduct a good programming interview
Those white board stuff reminds me when I was a CS student in the beginning of the 90's in France.

We had our exams on paper. And believe me, writing LISP on paper, knowing if you forgot one parenthesis you got 0 point ("if I type it on a computer, it fails !"), was pretty and unnecessary stressful.

So I relate with candidate facing that. Dude, on your day to day work, you WILL have a computer to check those !

How can you decently check those skill on a white board ? I totally agree with what's stated in this post.

Xoros··on How Facebook Changed the Spy Game
> Any solution that we create will require a balance between national security interests and constitutional rights

As I, as a European citizen, perfectly understand that FBI mission deals with internal US, and so the OP option is an internal point of view, wouldn't it be also wise to deal with it on an international way ?

Of course, with Putin and Trump, two strong virile personalities, dialog might seem hard, even impossible.

But any way, instead of trying to deal with it internally, "forcing" (and I honestly have no idea how it should be possible) American social media companies to be more transparent could be a breath of fresh air in this situation ?

Candid question.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure I get it.

Is it like the apache mod_php for php for example ?

Thanks in advance for your answer

Xoros··on How Fact-Free Parenting Policies Rob Kids' Independence
Yes, I read something about that subject in a recent HN post, with the religious opinions for homeschooling.

But in France, that's really irrelevant. All the recent terror attacks have been perpetrated by persons with a public school education.

So short sighted politicians could also claim that it's the fault of the public schooling system ! And that also be irrelevant.
