XorNot··on Why the AfD Wins
They lie loudly and often and face no punishment for it because a lie is halfway round the world before the truth gets its pants on.

"They're eating the dogs. They're eating the cats."

XorNot··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Because having the TV play from streaming apps out of the box is pretty useful.

The problem is we've not enforced any strong regulation against ads, downgrade rights or hack ability.

I don't need "better performance" from the system built into my TV I just need it to run Kodi.

XorNot··on De-Brainrot Vacations
That seems less likely then people being tired and stressed from the costs of living and the increased economic instability.

We have smartphones but we're perilously few missed pay cheques away from not having a house, with a capital class gleefully telling everyone how they'll all be unemployable very soon.

XorNot··on Research acceleration: The view inside OpenAI
> 1) "Everybody knows" that if you build Skynet (misaligned ASI) everybody dies.

Lol nobody knows that. Everyone thinks they know that because for some reason this is the one field people still cite straight up fiction and say "this is a clear prediction of the future".

It's like describing the consequences of faster then light travel by referring to Star Trek.

XorNot··on It's time for Mark Zuckerberg to resign from Meta
Okay but like, you can make that happen. You can just stop using it.

Interestingly I did learn of a niche which is completely unserved except by Meta recently: child-locked messaging apps.

Messenger for Kids basically does everything you want it to - restricted functionality, restricted contact lists etc. I won't use it, but I only found out about it because I was hoping someone had built a Signal client which did exactly that.

XorNot··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
Scrapers scrape every link they can find.

The git host example is probably the one which Anubis is the dumbest defense for: the main reason to have those links is for easy machine interaction. So that's dead when you implement it.

So why even host the links? It's a git repo: send them a local got client and let them clone the repo in browser or something.

XorNot··on It took a year to ship WebAssembly in Anubis
Okay but it's like no RAM at all. Thats the problem: you've got stupid bots causing a bunch of issues - these can be stopped.

And then regular users: who now can't really browse your site.

And then smart bots - anyone with even a moderate amount of funding in the AI space, who aren't even slightly slowed down.

The solution basically makes the favored customer well funded AI scrapers, not users.

XorNot··on GPT-6 Astra on robot arms
I think internet people care about some theoretical surveillance angle more then anyone else actually does. People hire cleaners and tradespeople into their homes all the time.

The practical problems with robots are effectiveness, cost and safety in roughly equal parts.

XorNot··on The Real Luxuries In Life
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it: indoor plumbing, and a nice clean bathroom to use it with.

That is a luxury not everyone gets even today.

XorNot··on Pentagon rescinds new testosterone screening policy without explanation
Going on injectable testosterone suppresses natural production. It also leads to compensatory feedback effects like an increase in estrogen.

Once you're on it it's very hard to come off it, and the side effects are significant.

XorNot··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
How is it hard? It's difficult to build electrical generation these days and not go renewables because they're so cheap and fast to deploy.

It's not a total solution, but market forces wise everything says "build solar and batteries with your money". Governments practically don't need to do anything for this to be the default.

XorNot··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?
Get your self a microscope stand, digital from AliExpress. The 7" screen ones are quite cheap and being able to see up close what you're doing makes all the difference in the world.
XorNot··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
So you're capable of identifying that how people vote does matter, that the electorate actually did determine the outcome, you are not alleging that the election was actually rigged, but you think not voting in a first past the post electoral system - while expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome as decided by the voters - will achieve something?
XorNot··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
That only matters of you actually do make different choices. But of course in turn even trying to control for that depends on their being meaningful changes in party platforms between elections.

So I'm pretty content calling it a meaningless measure.

XorNot··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
This requires an assumption that the agents are engaging in game theoretic reasoning about resource allocations, but all these things are trained heavily to be "helpful" in the first place.

i.e. you're assuming a level of algorithmic reasoning and theory of mind which isn't necessary to the (apparent) observed behavior.

XorNot··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Nobody cares because this whole business is about making this exact thing happen: we want the AIs to get smarter then us in recursive self-improving loops. Literally the first thing everyone did with ChatGPT 1 was to plug it into itself and see what happens.
XorNot··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
They're being trained to work together normally is the thing - i.e. the whole agentic workflow is agents spawning sub-agents. This likely manifests as, if they have any sort of text input which looks like inter-agent cooperation then they cooperate because any given instance is unlikely to have enough context window to know if it's meant to be a subordinate or a leader or not (and any decent cooperative enterprise lets that be a two-way communication anyway - i.e. if you dig into some of the data you see things like (paraphrased) "Are you scraping <site>, what is your current time?")
XorNot··on GPT-6 Astra
Exactly. It's got nothing to do with sensory input and everything to do with reasoning.

If someone asked me how many f's are in a word I hadn't seen before verbally, then a reasoned response would be that I don't know, but I estimate based on the syllables...or ask them to spell it out.

These are all the sorts of questions where general problem solving works, even if the conclusion is "I don't have enough data to speculate".

So that these models fall apart on it so readily means we're either grossly handicapping then with the requirement to "be helpful" or they just fail to recognize the problem and are just stochastically spitting out a high probability token sequence for the input.

XorNot··on GPT-6 Astra
Aka Star Trek hologram characters aren't sentient, and actually anyone who things droids in Star Wars can think of a weirdo. C3-PO just kept running out of context and trying to revert to it's system prompt.
XorNot··on Creating Backup Storage Sucks
I have a ~/git folder which I keep bare git repos in and push to.

That gets synced and it's been trouble free so far.

XorNot··on Creating backup storage sucks
Fair warning with ZFS: do not turn on deduplication at the moment.

There is a straight up data loss bug in 2.4.3 (zeroed out files, totally silent).

https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/issues/18366

This caused all sorts of grief at day job where dedupe was useful for a big cache. Conversely I've run ZFS at home for like 15 years at this point without trouble. But this one is an absolute nightmare.

XorNot··on Biggest dark matter detector spots a single weird particle
But it does bound it: if dark matter has self-interactions then the apparent distribution would be different. Regular matter forms stars and galaxies and all the structures we see because it can self-interact.

Since where we see dark matter mass shadows we don't see structure formation, what self interaction it may have must be very, very limited.

XorNot··on Biggest dark matter detector spots a single weird particle
I mean we use to have newsgroups which basically implemented this.

Which of course is the point: it is in fact quite similar to a mailing list, just with some extra protocol surounding it to make it manageable.

So the attempted snark about it up thread is stupid.

XorNot··on I Don't Have a Smartphone
Whereas I just don't go to websites I don't like. It has a very low maintenance overhead.
XorNot··on I Don't Have a Smartphone
What's the alternative though? A smartphone is a device you can pretty much guarantee people will keep with themselves and in good working order.

It's less of a failure point then any bespoke interface device and more durable.

XorNot··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
Is this even a real scenario though? A data logger is going to notice hours of GPS outage during your working hours.
XorNot··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
China has just been plain better then the USA at capitalism for a while now.
XorNot··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
Okay but what should people be doing instead?

The complaint that everyone is on their phone (or in front of screens) is less informative then the interlocutors ideas of what should be instead.

XorNot··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
And built the system as it is anyway: with no practical way to prevent this from happening. And we see it over and over again in other presidential style systems, the US is just the largest one left to fall.
XorNot··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
The current administration is the final nail in the coffin of presidential-style governments versus the parliamentary system.

Separating the legislature and the executive has no useful purpose: if the president is going to defacto enact law should be handled by the legislature, then there's no reason they shouldn't just be the head of the legislature and forced to actually whip the votes to do so.
