XiS··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
Thank you for giving some insight on your experiences I practice with that amount of devices.

I have a zigbew network running with around 55 devices current. Ever since matter over thread I'm wondering whether I should start making the switch.

Tell me, what made you start migrating to Matter? General availability of hardware, latency, stability, something else?

XiS··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
`establishing it as a more robust foundation for larger and more heterogeneous deployments.`

Based on.... 6 devices?

Quite honestly I would have been interested in measurements with more than only 6 devices. Maybe upto 50 or so,even better if they'd mixed different hardware nodes for a more realistic scenario

XiS··on LineageOS Statistics
I agree on the locked down part. Ever since I bought my first smartphone (HTC Desire) I've been flashing custom ROMs pretty much the day I bought it. In the beginning it was a hastle, then it became much easier. In 2021 and 2023 I bought a Xiaomi and it required registering before bootloader unlock was allowed. I didn't like I had to register, but did it anyway.

The real problem for me were the hard to come by blobs that needed flashing after certain updates. And the fact no official supported LineageOS build as available. That last one is mostly on my part for not checking before buying. But still, in the past pretty much any popular phone had one or more official builds supported on XDA. Nowadays you need to venture into Telegram groups scrolling over endless linear conversations of people asking the same issue over and over again. Maybe I'm just getting old, but what was wrong with using a (well structured) forum?

For me, I'm not that concerned with having contactless payments work. Although I did switch banks just to not have the Google Services/wallet requirement. That was short lived though, pretty much every contactless payment now only works with Google Wallet (ridiculous), I just gave up on it and pay by card instead.

I just want to get away from the fact Google Services is integrated into everything you do on your phone. The fact Google Wallet has access to not only the payments you make using NFC, but also the last x transactions on you bank account 'for fraud detection purposes' is quite insane if you ask me.

That's why I just run plain without Google Services (not even the sandboxed one by GrapheneOS) and accept the fact certain conveniences just isn't available for me.

I don't even miss rooting, which I mostly did in the past to have (non VPN based) add blocking on OS level. I just replaced most apps by their browser-based alterantives and use an add blocker there.

XiS··on LineageOS Statistics
It's quite sad to see these stats. It used to be the defacto standard for custom ROMs. These dwindling numbers make me think either people aren't as interested in custom ROMs anymore and using the (bloated/Google) factory ROMs or maybe there's some new standard.

Didn't these numbers used to be much, much higher in the past?

NB: Since I'm on GrapheneOS now I haven't looked back

XiS··on Identity verification on Claude
`Persona is contractually limited in how they can use your data: only to provide and support verification and to improve their ability to prevent fraud.`

Right.... So training a better facial recognition model improves their ability to prevent fraud?

Strange, I'm on 2.4.1 already. Oh wait...this isn't about ZFS.

XiS··on Instabridge has acquired Nova Launcher
Honestly... I just wants a launcher with tabs to sort apps in categories (no not app groups).

Nova Prime almost gone, before that Apex Launcher...

And every other launcher seems to just love to just present a search bar to find your apps and use some magic sorting algorithm to sort your apps...

I want predictable, user ordered apps in tabs so I can open one by heart with my eyes closed.

XiS··on Hardware Touch, Stronger SSH
Been using ed25519-sk with Yubikey for a few years now. Key is stored in KeepassXC and loaded in my SSH agent upon unlock.

It makes my SSH key pretty portable across devices

XiS··on SmartTube Compromised
Although it's very unfortunate this happened, and it shows a lack of security practices, this could happen to any all developer. Compromising other apps you do install.

On my TV the app vanished and after some searching, it was disabled. I was kinda afraid Google had finally (ab)used it's Play Services power to ban it. But luckily it was because the developer marked it as compromised. All and all impact was minimised this way.

I doubt your statement about requiring a Google account to be connected, as you can also import subscriptions instead of granting access to your account.

This guy on YouTube made several videos reviewing these and also doing some WireShark analysis, also on NanoKVM.

Personally I'd never use these on an interned facing network. But they can still be handy for local only.

Drivers licenses aren't ICAO 9303 compliant. For EU documents a separate spec is being used (NEN-ISO-IEC 18013-3). Small pointer: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CEL...

Context: Made an implementation for reading these when Dutch drivers license model with NFC first came available (model 2014 if I remember correctly)

I tried this last year. It works though it's pretty slow.

I really hate having to also support the Apple ecosystem. Development, CI/CD integration is really poor without having to buy the hardware.

Tried this a year ago, it was a real mess, barely worked and broke often.

Hopefully it changed a lot in the meantime because I would really like this to be integrated into NextCloud.

He uses an Aqara Wireless Mini Switch, which isn't water proof. I'm searching for a (reasonably priced) waterproof button for my front door. Until I find one, I'm still sticking to my ESP3389 which acts as a MiTM notifying my HomeAssistant over MQTT.
