yes and that has been done already. I posted somewhere on this page links to it, in case you're interested.

Oh snap, thanks for reminding me of this. It's called ParallelJS. Here's a link to a demo video: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/research/intel-labs-r... :) I like the accent

I'd recommend checking the Ajaxian article[1] that sums it up. You can find the source on Github [2]. You can play around with the River Trail interactive shell [3] too.

Thanks for posting this here! Highly appreciated and relevant. I'll check this out, but why a Facebook Group?? Can't you just open an IRC Channel? I would definitely join and contribute back. I don't have a Facebook account and won't use it and I'm still very social. hmm, I guess many hackers don't have a FB account and hate using the Facebook Oauth Login on 3rd party sites.
X4··on Did these guys just reinvent the Web?
I prettified the code myself too, but it's really unreadable. Have you extracted the parts into a nice library? Mind sharing your efforts?

Honestly, without going into the source code, I was like, this is matrix transformation, this is matrix transformation.. then I saw matrix3d and I was like yeaah!

I believe that no software can excel without a good mathematical foundation. What I see coming is that this approach will be extended by P2P Load-Balancing. Similar to what Bitcoin Hackers [1] were doing and still do [1].

X4··on Inspired by the 180 websites I will understand 52 academic papers in 52 weeks
Why don't you make it a business model and monetize laymanizing/summarizing papers by request? Just thinking, you could, you don't need to. If you consider that, you could invite colleagues to do the same on a distributed platform/blog. So that every new scientist can just connect and add value, without getting vendor-locked. Who knows, maybe there is a market for selling the results of "peer-review" ;)

You know what? I wish that you get rich with that! Everbody would benefit from more openness in Science. I hate that many many publishers squeeze scientists out like parasitic worms and also cash on us and other scientist who just want to read the paper. They rip us off in the range of $5-$300 per paper and do that with mostly keeping 100% of the profit.

Their industry damaging business model: A←parasite-publisher→B

Breaking Bad: With an open business model: A←→B←→C←→D …

X4··on Ask HN: Want to experience Remote Work. How to?
For the World

1) Think about a project that you would love to work for.

2) Now search a FOSS equivalent of that project on privatelee.com or google

3) Read the contribution & coding guidelines, setup your IDE/Editor accordingly

4) Fork the project and start contributing, connect to the core developers through their prefferd medium. IRC/Mailing-Lists/Forums or plain Email.

5) Credits & Honor.

For a Company

1) Ask yourself what you want to change in the world, if you had power & money. Think about it seriously and flabbergast yourself, by finding out what you really wanted to do all your life.

2) Hunt companies actually doing that on privatelee.com or google

3) This will be the first time you can be really honest about why you want to work for this company. Keep that in mind when you're writing your job application. Send it by Email and add tracking to it, so you can see, if and how companies read your CV etc.

4) Wait for a response for 4 days and remind the person, cc another responsible person. You can hunt anyone's email address easily online.

5) Be yourself in your job interview. Easy. You always wanted to do that and it's your dream. Everybody wants YOU in their company. For me it wouldn't matter if such a candidate had failed school or not, when he had the skills and intrinsic motivation to help the company go forward.

6) $$$

I also thought about implementing a language that bases on this, a language that sees the world in all it's shapes as raw numbers, a matrix, renderable as graphs. This is so freaking awesome, that I cannot stop thinking about the crazy new ideas this injected into me and suspect that I'm probably becoming a numberphile.

Interestingly, I was just reading the Book (hardcover) with the recursive Title: "The Fractal Geometry of Nature" by Benoit Mandelbrot. And this brings an entirely new meaning into my world view after combining the ideas behind this and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multifractal_analysis#technique...

X4··on Two-laser boron fusion lights the way to radiation-free energy
I would like to say that contrary to software engineering, physical engineers tend to use quirks more often than software engineers, but the reality is that in both worlds quirks are heavily used and accepted. Hence MVP and other quick and dirty delivery models are popularized...
X4··on Two-laser boron fusion lights the way to radiation-free energy
2) It's a very rare [1] and expensive material, but has lots of awesome properties. There is only a little boron on earth and 63% of that is in Turkey, many have died fighting against outselling it there, but politicians sealed the international deals anyway, that's a widely ignore fact.

It is a low-abundance element in both the solar system and the Earth's crust.

Somebody should invest a lot of money and time into finding synthetic Boron, because I really believe into this technology. Without synthetic Boron, it's a waste of very rare resources that we have on our earth crust.

Side note: Interestingly there was even a "reference" to Boron known as Boronite in Star Trek that could be synthesized into one Omega Molecule that looked like a Fullerene [2]. The Omega molecule was known to be the most powerful substance known to exist.

X4··on Ask HN: Would you hire a coder just by looking at GitHub contributions?
@jedberg is totally right! It's like judging people by the way how they pack their suitcase. To be perfectly honest, you can obtain metrics from Github that have nothing to do with coding, but behavioral analysis. I'll not go into details, because I think it's an unfair advantage.

Github is mostly used for personal projects. You can find a lot of dotfiles, frameworks, many smaller and some larger projects done for a hobby/friend/school/course or out of frustration/boredom.

What my Professor did is the way to go! Just hire that guy for a project, see how it's going and come together in a meeting to talk about the code, the solution and rationale behind the thinking. Then either conduct another team project to understand how he integrates in your company, or just hire that guy. Simple as that.

X4··on The 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

X4··on Google is Exploring an Alternative to Cookies for Ad Tracking
I also made the switch after many years with Chrome. Chrome becomes very sluggish when you have too many tabs open, I guess this is why so many people like OneTab.

Today it's normal to have 10+ tabs open, to read the articles and then leave the best ones open for a later usage. That said I can easily have about 400 tabs open in various Tab-Groups, which is a killer feature.

But honestly, one Firefox addon is so important that I believe that it should be a core feature, it's called UnloadTab [1]. This addon frees up the memory unused tabs allocate, after a defined period of time. It helped a friend with a slow 800MHz Laptop with just a little RAM to finally start clicking links without being afraid that the machine locks up.

People who enjoy the TabGroups feature like I do, should definitely checkout the TabGroups Menu addon.

X4··on Apple just updated without asking and locked my iPhone
I upvoted, because I find it funny and the blame is on us, because we don't complain about mad enough.

Apple just goes along with this, like with many other "technical errors", do you sincerly believe that it's technical error that they collect data of every move you do and sync it with itunes, or that they accept nothing but credit cards, or that they update your phone without asking, or even remove an app that you bought? I could find references to each of these claims, but it's not worth it, because you decide.

But don't get me wrong, as much as I was amused by this, I'm that much sorry for you too on the other side. Because you dear Hackerfriend are getting treated like shit [1] by Apple so much that even cartoons start joking about it. The bad thing is that you can't do much about it other than buying into the other "do not evil" Android phone.

X4··on Swiss to vote on 2,500 franc basic income for every adult
In September 1848 Joseph Charlier published in Brussels "Solution du Problème Social" (Solution of the Social Problem), a remarkable book [1]

The permanent income hypothesis was formulated by the Nobel Prize winning economist Milton Friedman in 1957 and can be read in his Book [2].

Just as an understatement, you can see which country has the highest backing of entrepreneurial activity [3].

For those who don't know what the idea behind the unconditional income is: I'll briefly explain it. Imagine you work hard and only get enough to live on the edge. Now imagine you're not even the average joe, but feel that you could really change things on the world. You haven't to be a genius in order to do that, but you need to be creative, innovative and willing to work without the command to work. Now let's get an eagle's perspective on what would happen, if encouraged people would not have to spent their entire lives working for the bare minimum that keeps them slaves of the economy and industry.

You would essentially create the startup-country #1. Everybody could now cherish their dreams again and make them real. You don't believe it right, that's "stupid eastern communism thinkblarg", right? How comes you Sir, Madam believe in Kickstarter, Crowdfunding, Bitcoin, P2P, Wikipedia.. and the individual freedom, so to say the american dream, when you actually have to rely on the mercy of the rich and your leading political party? Isn't that a wet dream reserverd for the 1:100.000? Let's chill and put into retrospect on what would happen if you were getting a salary that allowed you to get your basics needs fulfilled. You would be less sick, stressed, worn out. You would now be able to do what you always wanted to do in your life. Hey admit it, you wanted to buy a house at some time and have a wife and children and you knew that you'd have to work hard, the half of your life to get there. Believe it or not, but giving people freedom doesn't mean blindly trusting them. You are only one and the community you live in that government that likes to keep you locked into boundaries called country, consist of many of the smartest people on the world. Why not let them free, who do you trust if not them? We're far from a Star Trek world, where anybody get's free access to medicine and any food or resource he needs.

Dear patriots, don't be afraid that your Governments managed it to go bankrupt, they've managed that already and not for the first time. It's time you your friends, families understand that the people you thought were the cause, aren't the cause. It's your Government stupid. I don't say hate Governments, but do you blindly trust a complete stranger to care for your baby? Certainly not.

For those who're not still convinced that an unconditional income is a good idea:

Why do you blindly trust your Government word-by-word to judge on your and everbody else's life's? When these people cannot even cooperate with just a few hundred other politicians? You see how wrong it is to not trust all people, but a selected few. Let's get over the indoctrinated prejudices and get to know each other again. Hi =)

X4··on Show HN: Linux activity recorder
Good input, yeah after seeing the demo I've also noticed that the anomaly detection monitoring cannot be solved by simply pointing to a process.

I'd suggest aggregating the data of vmstat,ps,lsof,nc etc. into a simplified and abstract summary by incorparating a structure based AI model, like HTM.

You could build rules and action lists and anomaly type lists, then let the AI categorize anomalies by pattern and structure detection. Heck you could go much further, ie. building an NLP query interface.. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to smoke your brain, it's just what I would do. Keep working on it!
