Asking: Isn't the only true solution the one using Decibels for Addition? Because everyone else either just redefines or overwrites a value. Also addition of decibels cannot be disproofed as fake.

wow, these charts really look stylish! Good work :)

Cool, I only knew two from that list. These sources are surely really useful to follow to keep up with the field. Thank you!

X4··on Responding to the Explosion of Student Interest in Computer Science [pdf]
It's unfair to highly skilled people, because it would bore the hell out of them. That's how you weed out the top 1% and breed a normalized group of students. I truly understand why some of the super-skilled people I know didn't even consider going to any higher school, but still beat the shit out of the PhD's that I know, when it comes to a) knowledge b) theoretical and practical skill c) solid maths + formal verification. It doesn't mean that universities suck, but they polarize skills towards industrial demand and forget about the diversity of culture that arrived, they are about to eliminate for the greater good of the industrial market, which manifests in the number of graduates. But oh beware, that too many graduate, as if that would mean that the university is cheap and will loose it's prestige. Professors tend to hate it, when too many pass their exams and often times help to let some % of the students fail on purpose, to keep up their "prestige". If every single professor explained thinks like on Reddit's ELI10 and used interactive media to underline the structure behind a problem, then almost everybody would pass. So, does a high number graduations automatically mean that the university only teaches low-skill courses, resulting in low-quality students? I'd say no, if they teached students more efficiently.

X4··on Homomorphic encryption implementation
CHY872 is right. Who benefits most from this are governments, spy-agencies, military and a small a solid number of security-aware civilists. This is right as long as nobody enforces FHE to the government, but I doubt that it would occur in the USA at this time from that side. If it happens at all, which I also highly doubt, then it maybe somewhere in Europe.
X4··on Homomorphic encryption implementation
I also need an implementation, but my fellow crypo researcher told me that there is the problem that no FHE can exist until we don't find a way to write onto the encrypted container as often as required, without damaging it's structure after only a few edits. So basically all current implementation existing (known to him) were not able to really qualify as a solution, because the inevitable destruction of the data after a limited number of edits. Another point was performance, but that wouldn't be a deal breaker according to him.

But he also said, that if someone finds a way to truly create an FHE-Scheme that works for unlimited amounts of edits, then it would be truly a ground-breaking thing to the whole crypto community. It's highly welcomed, but he is not that optimistic about it for the near future.

Thank you so much for posting this now! I was writing a paper about this topic and this arrives just in the right time! Awesome.

X4··on Microsoft announces the Surface Pro 3
Ontopic:

I would buy it, if these criterias were met:

     1) I can install an unpopular Linux distro onto it (NO VM!).
     2) I won't get serious issues on Linux, due to no drivers being found compatible, overheating, hybrid-gpu switching problems, touchscreen issues, jumping stylus, battery dead in <3h
     3) UEFI isn't causing as much trouble, as I've heard.
     4) The keyboard is much better than the crappy colored plastic it looks like. I want a high quality keyboard with backlight. I would pay $200 extra for that.
     5) It has HDMI, USB3 and a way to increase the internal storage and ram.
@smrtinsert

Should, would, could. But they didn't, for about two centuries, sorry シ There is so much hope in your writing, hope that Microsoft recognizes where it erred and where it did it right. Alas, there might be no such plan, because they haven't found a way to directly capitalize on that yet, or political/strategical/management reasons.

I don't have any prejudices against Windows, OSX, Linux, BSD and alternative OS users, but I like all of them. What makes me and probably others turn off the ears are hardcore evangelists of any kind just as well as fanboys/fangirls. This is not directed to you, you're ok check ✊ . I just want to say that, there are such people whom you can innocently ask, why they've installed Windows onto their Mac (for example) and all you get is arrogance and hatred plus a bunch of prejudices on how one can question the superiority of windows. On another case I talked with a Windows Phone developer and she was such a hard knock evangelist, I was kinda feeling attacked, just because I asked how she plans on integrating with the back-end software we've developed to deploy the final app to various app stores.

Wireshark, Deep Packet Inspection and similar might be terms you can look after to find out more. RFCs are what you need to understand the protocols (if they are public standards)

I thought linking to the source rather than to just the pdf would be more useful for you, as a) some might like to actually contribute and b) many would like to know what else the author made and lastly c) a minority of people isn't allowed to open pdf's from the internet, so they could build it locally (or just starr on github).
X4··on The Bro Network Security Monitor
I helped employ women over men, when I saw that they were eager to learn. The reasons for that were simple, I believe that diversity helps to increase the efficiency of a team and that large monolithic, hierarchical, homogenic teams should be abandoned. Why are people so sensitive about some words? I thought I can't understand until I heard about the word "no-homo" last week. THAT was the most absurd word I've heard in my lifetime. As a kid I had zero problems kissing my best friend (on the cheek), regardless of sex and I'm straight. There's nothing wrong about it, but "normal is relative and time-variying".

When I was in the position to scan and choose between many hundreds of job applications and even on a mid-sized start-up, where only a few applications went in. No I am NOT a HR Person, absolutely not, but they asked me to do it, so I did that too.

EDIT: Not sure why this earned a downvote, but to your information there is no law forcing companies to let a % of women in for example (in the country I live).

happened already ;) remember the guy who patented smileys? (it was unapproved later)

I don't know, am I morally wrong if I don't give a fu about patents, but honor and credit the original founder, IF I copy things? I mean like we've been thought in practice with CC

X4··on Amazon granted patent for taking photos against a white background
absolutely.. stop here! It's the system not a poor woman working for a giant money printing industry! Challenge the status quo instead of sniping out individuals.

This is my most loved favourite Game, yeahhh! This is so awesome, I'm gonna buy a new PC and smash Gentoo, or NixOS onto it! Hope I find out which Graphics-card and which Mainboard is supported well enough to play the game at max resolution.

X4··on How fast is PDF.js?
Can you link us to one, so we can do independent tests with it, please?
X4··on How fast is PDF.js?
I used the latest version from git and also stable releases. It would take about 3min to render (for this 11MB file only, all other pdfs, albeit smaller, load fast). It was the only PDF that was slow, all others were loaded almost instantly, however the other files were much slower too.
X4··on How fast is PDF.js?
I've reported it and uploaded the pdf, so someone on IRC responsible could debug it, but we didn't get far enough to fix it. Otherwise I wouldn't just add another PDF Viewer to a site. But it's only the downloads section and the preview there really is not for reading, but looking if it's the right document. Anyway, thanks for caring for the project. There's a reason Mozilla chose PDF.js over writing it in C++ and that's not just because of security I think.
X4··on How fast is PDF.js?
Honestly? I only have 2x1.3GHz, but it loads damn fast for files <= 5MB. How large are the files that you open that make your browser inresponsive?
X4··on How fast is PDF.js?
PDF.js is really nice and awesome, but for me it doesn't work for documents with a file size of 11MB. It was a catalogue and to finally get the thing to render faster I used pdf2htmlEX (html5) which slimmed the 11MB file down to about 2MB with no visible quality loss and text would still be perfectly selectable, even in old and crappy browsers like IE7. I'm happily using both on a customers site. The 11MB file rendered good enough on my Client's new PC, but they have an i7 ;) My own box is really slow :/ (saving for a macbook pro)

Currently I was about to write a service to autoconvert PDF documents uploaded via ownCloud into the said HTML5 document, but it seems that even though I've ssh, this server is managed and doesn't come with make and also has no poppler or fontforge libraries available. Meh :(

I'm thinking about compiling the binary with --prefix=~/.local/lib and copy the dependencies I've found to that directory on the server. Hope that works, otherwise I'll need to write an API for pdf2htmlEX on a server where I've root and upload modified & new pdf files to it, then wait for it to finish the html5 conversion and download the files to the right directory using curl. That'd be much more work than just dropping the binary onto the server and executing the service as cronjob for modfied or new files.

Any ideas on howto solve this cleverly?

X4··on Head injury causes savant syndrome
I have never told someone about this, but the opposite happened to me. I had been tested because I was different than any other child of my age. And was diagnosed with a very high IQ (you can guess how many friends I had), but after I was attacked and hit heavily at my head by some russians without a reason (for their pleasure), I have lost most of my ability to think as fast as before. I was in coma for 2days at the local hospital and have no memory of what happened, except of what friends told me. I can't explain how life depressing that was for me, but almost 7y later, I started to gain a little in my speed of thought. However I'll probably never be that smart again and it feels like a big loss to me. I'm still quite talented, but nothing comparable to before the attack.
X4··on Build Tools – Make, no more
Amusing indeed. (Functional) Reactive Programming [1] [2] anyone. That's the same thing we've learned during development to be profitable and of real use. And it seems that build systems also converge towards the same lesson learned, but slowly.
