Wouter33··on The first 30 days of my "iTunes for newspapers"-startup
As mentioned in the article, i'm also one of the persons who never paid for journalism before this came around. With Blendle i can browse through articles from all kinds of newspapers or magazines and read the ones i find really interesting. Perfect for a daily commute when you don't have the time to read a whole newspaper. In that way i think this is a really nice way to generate revenue for publishers. Cannibalisation is out of the questions here because i never generated any revenue for them before this.
Wouter33··on Ask HN: 6 months later, DigitalOcean still Sucks... Why do you use them?
Could be. But Digital Ocean does not provide you with a movable IP that you could point at a different load balancer when the old one becomes faulty. With a movable IP or a cloud based load balancer a single point of failure could be prevented. DO does not offer any of them.
Wouter33··on How To: Hosting with Amazon S3, CloudFront and Route 53
Isn't this as safe as just posting to an SSL page? If there is a MITM-attack they will just replace the contents of the iframe to another page?
Wouter33··on How To: Hosting with Amazon S3, CloudFront and Route 53
I'm already hosting a website with this setup. Works perfectly and is blazing fast. I recommend it for everyone.

The website is a static marketing front for a web app that is being served from a SSL subdomain on another cluster. The only thing i'm doubting about is that i want to offer a one input field e-mail signup on the frontpage, which of course, will be without SSL in this setup. What would you do? Skip this fast signup and put the whole signup on the subdomain or use the signup with a post to the SSL page (less secure)?

Wouter33··on Show HN: Self-hosted, open-source infrastructure monitoring and alerting
Yes, web hooks indeed.
Wouter33··on Show HN: Self-hosted, open-source infrastructure monitoring and alerting
That's monitoring. Alerting seems only possible via Email, Hipchat, SMS and Telephone.
Wouter33··on Show HN: Self-hosted, open-source infrastructure monitoring and alerting
Great! Have been looking for something like this lately! First impression is good. But what i can't seem to find is a http notification. I would like a http alert if something is down for a x number of consecutive pings. This way i can do some API calls or implement my own alerting.
Wouter33··on Ask HN: Email app: How to store emails for enterprise?
The most realistic solution is to start with basic functionalities on your own infrastructure. Store the emails on your (private) cloud. Of course try to maximize security. Then offer on-premise storage of emails as a premium functionality and build the functionality when your first customer wants to upgrade to this package.
Wouter33··on Hacker Bar - an open source RubyMotion Mac app for Hacker News
Looks nice and i intended to download it. But $ 4,99 is a bit high for such a small app without the possibility to testdrive it.
Wouter33··on US blogger fined 8,000 Euros by France for criticizing Société Générale
> Especially when it comes to crooked banks or politicians. France is a strange country that likes to give lessons about democracy to the rest of the world, but when you look at things closer, France is closer to a monarchy than a democracy.

Because a monarchy is something like a dictatorship? Absolute monarchies _could_ have similarities with a dictatorship but these almost do not exist anymore. Please dive into some background information about, for example, a constitutional monarchy like we have in the Netherlands [1]. No way this resembles non-democracy.

Wouter33··on Finding the right CDN for our startup
I have been using CDN77.com, you should check them out. Custom SSL is 699 dollars but the performance is really good.
Wouter33··on Ask HN: could an EC2 microinstance handle being on TechCrunch or front page HN?
And that is indeed the case. You only get a limited time of CPU, after that it's powers goes to somewhat like zero.
Wouter33··on Ask HN: could an EC2 microinstance handle being on TechCrunch or front page HN?
You are right about nginx and it's performance. The only problem is that micro instances don't only have low cpu power. But also only a cpu boost. If it's get hit with multiple request after each other, the cpu boost is exhausted and the requests will pile up.

For a static page, S3 hosting of the html file is way more efficient.

Wouter33··on Ask HN: could an EC2 microinstance handle being on TechCrunch or front page HN?
No, it would not handle the load. But you can use your AWS S3 bucket as a host for your index.html file. In route 53 you can easily point the index of the domain to your S3 bucket. This way you have a huge load capacity for the lowest prices.
Wouter33··on Ask HN: Social micropayment system for scientists?
A nice idea to disrupt the scientific publishing scene. One problem with your idea. I don't know if you have an understanding of the process of publishing a paper? But every researcher publishes his or her paper through a journal. These journals have panels of reviewers who check them and after that the publisher publishes them in the journal (or not). Getting your paper published in respected journals reflects on your status as a researcher. Most of the journals are owned by some big companies who put them behind a paywall.

So you can try to create a platform for paper publishing at a low cost. But researchers don't get the peer reviews they normally get and the publicity they get in a "big" journal. Uploading them to your platform as a secondary platform would not be allowed by the journals they publish to. So that's the flaw in your plan.

Wouter33··on Posting to HN is like exposing yourself to the eye of Mordor
Check. As a developer and entrepreneur i like seeing new and interesting projects from same-minded people. Most of the articles posted on HN are interesting. But sometimes i just want to see what is created by HN people to test it, support them or to get inspired.
Wouter33··on Show HN: Framebase.io, Video for Developers
Looks neat. Could be a service i will use in the future. Only thing i noticed is that you use flash to record the videos. In my case, this is broken because of the peper flash player from chrome. Is it not an idea to use the getusermedia API where supported?
Wouter33··on Desktop notifications in Firefox nightlies
You have to authorize every domain that wants to use the notifications. Besides that, it has to be a user action, the authorization. You can't automate this process without some hacking.

Love the notification API for my webapps. Wish there was a sign of IE adopting this technique so i can implement this mainstream.
