WorkLifeBalance··on False Advertising for College Is Pretty Much the Norm
> "Too many people go to college"

This is complete claptrap, would you also say "Too many people go to secondary school"? How about "Too many people go to elementary"?

There is vast value in an educated workforce and "too many" is a nonsense reason for why university level education shouldn't be available for all.

WorkLifeBalance··on How I slashed a SQL query's runtime with two Unix commands
I don't know mysql/mariaDB that well, but I know in ms sql server that doing a DISTINCT on a Function([Column]) would not use an index on [Column].

In this case it would be much faster to have an intermediate table or column with that statistic that could then be properly indexed.

WorkLifeBalance··on Show HN: A map that shows you how far you can go for a given time or distance
Starting near London right clicking the map it then restricted to "France Only" (which I couldn't seem to change) and with 2 hours on a bike the result was a blob somewhere in the English Channel.

Interesting concept though!

WorkLifeBalance··on France bans smartphone use in schools
You don't need to read the news every day, let alone every hour of the day.

It's an addiction to the way news is currently produced.

It's entirely reasonable to spend an evening a week reading up on tech news. It's not reasonable to have a compulsion to check the news whenever you have a down minute.

I'm guilty of that myself, I'm currently writing this while a program compiles but I wouldn't wish this on a developing mind.

Besides, there are other places where news and the internet is available, why shouldn't places legislate away having that 24/7 on smartphones during school.

There is a "school mode": Off.

WorkLifeBalance··on Uber shuts down self-driving trucks unit
Does this work in jurisdictions such as London where there are extra checks that drivers must pass?

I can't imagine that a food delivery service could be competitive using drivers rated for safe person delivery.

Is the driver fleet for Uber eats even the same as the minicab fleet or is it really just another business?

WorkLifeBalance··on A History of Individually Wrapped Cheese Slices (1979) [pdf]
It's not altruism, they're just getting ahead of changes in the law.

The EU announced[1] they were looking at banning single use plastics. It was after that announcement that lots of companies annoucned they were making changes. By getting ahead of the law they can brand it as doing something they didn't need to do. (Much like how UK phone companies announced they were "abolishing roaming charges" because they did it a few months before it was an enforced law.

They get to advertise their 'green' credentials while not moving themselves to an uncompetitive position in the long term.

That polyfill relies on a third party which can then effectively gain analytics for your site. They store and keep the referring URLs and user agent combinations.
WorkLifeBalance··on Efficiently Generating a Number in a Range
The modulo approach is biased for all ranges which don't divide the full range but only a small amount of bias at small ranges rather than a large amount of bias at large ranges.
WorkLifeBalance··on New Yorkers Trying to Flee High State Taxes Find Moving Isn’t So Easy
I am happy if someone claims that something politically isn't possible in the US. (Gun control may be a good example) I can't claim otherwise, my issue is when instead of arguing that, someone claims that a measure wouldn't have the same outcome in the US or technically isn't possible in the US without any evidence of such.

It shifts the blame from the current politics which is something people can engage with to "reasons out of anyone's control", which just helps maintain status quo.

WorkLifeBalance··on New Yorkers Trying to Flee High State Taxes Find Moving Isn’t So Easy
Exceptionalism makes it really difficult to engage with conversations about US politics where you try to say, "It doens't have to be this way!" but get told that the US is somehow different to every other developed nation and couldn't possibly apply what works elsewhere.

This happens across the US political specturm, whether about their tax system, banking system, gun reform, electoral reform, and many other issues; it's a frequent refrain that the US is so different it can't learn from others.

As a US citizen who is resident elsewhere it is infuriating to watch.

WorkLifeBalance··on ‘Star Citizen’ Court Case Reveals the Messy Reality of Crowdfunding a $200M Game
Compare the process for "Star Citizen" to "Rimworld", another kickstarted project which is nearing a 1.0 release after years of development.

Rimworld had a public beta and has been iterating and incorporating feedback and while the end-result might not be as ambitious as someone with $200m might care to dream up (rimworld raised ~$250k) but it's a very fun game which most importantly actually exists.

In fact existing in some form allowed the community to write mods and extensions many of which have ended up patched into the game itself as it nears release.

WorkLifeBalance··on Twitch streamers who spend years broadcasting to no one
The corrollary of "you need to break the rules (such as view-botting) to get ahead" is that only people who are willing to view-bot "make it", which in turn really reduces the diversity of the content which ends up in the 'mainstream' (or main-stream for twitch, meaning front-page or top X when listing by game).
WorkLifeBalance··on The open-plan office is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad idea

WorkLifeBalance··on Show HN: Gurn – Use words, not bookmarks
I'd be wary of using a service built by a company (Gradient Ltd) that among other things provides, "Effective Attribution, Web Tracking, Analytical Insights".

From https://www.gradient.co/#products (scroll down 1 section).

"Attribution and identity stitching of users across multiple channels is complex and confusing – we provide a platform that does it all in one place."

"With Kintra you can prove how effective a social campaign was and visualise the full customer journey down to an identifiable individual – simple."

WorkLifeBalance··on OpenPDF – A free Java library for creating and editing PDF files
I was excited to hear about a PDF library not based on iText but alas, this is just another iText fork, in fact the full fork chain seems to be:

    forked from rtfarte/OpenPDF
    forked from kulatamicuda/iText-4.2.0
    forked from daviddurand/iText-4.2.0

WorkLifeBalance··on Django Newbie Mistakes
I doubt it's still the case but for a long time the default "Authorization" was effectively fail-open so a newbie mistake was to use that and then not customize it leaving your API vulnerable to any logged in user reading anything.

There was a bright red box effectively saying "Don't use this module without customizing it" in the documentation but that didn't stop newbies going live with it in place.

WorkLifeBalance··on Norwegian Consumer Council report on how tech companies use dark patterns [pdf]
I noticed Twitch is doing the same thing, if you "manage your choices" you get the banner to "manage your choices" on every page load, the only way to get rid of the banner was to "accept" which accepts everything. (I hope it was just a 'bug' but it didn't feel like it.)

I don't get it though, if companies are so scared of being fined 4% of revenue that they put up these banners, aren't they inviting the worse end of the punishment scale by trying to weasel around the law rather than just ignoring it completely?

WorkLifeBalance··on ‘You can't use Brotli for dynamic content’ and other misconceptions
I wish it wasn't, but IE11 is still a major browser, at least too big to just dump completely in my experience. The UK is worse than most countries in that regard though with higher than average IE11 usage.

WorkLifeBalance··on MyHeritage Says 92M User Accounts Have Been Compromised
From the "Steps we've taken" it sounds like they haven't forced a password reset on compromised accounts. I can understand from a business perspective that would be a harsh way for affect people to find out they were in the breach but it seems reckless to keep compromised hashes in the system.

I feel like Netflix is only in there to make the acronym, does it really belong?

It's an odd collection, the others are tech giants yet there's no microsoft and netflix thrown in. Netflix is big but it's not Apple big.
