Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What is the most significant small thing that changed your life?
* My brother bought me an external battery pack to charge my phone during travel, that has certainly given me some peace of mind and it's lasted about a decade.

* I try to tell my family I love them more now. I was pretty obsessed with work in my twenties, now I'm 33 and my folks are 65. One day I realized I didn't have many more years left where they'd be able to ski and bike with me I try to take moments to truly appreciate our time together.

* Waking Up App. Work stress and frustration has been my excuse in the past when I was a shit partner to my (now ex) girlfriends. I've been trying to work on not getting as angry when I get DM'd on Slack, or a bs email comes at off hours. I need to be a better version of myself.

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What was the turning point in your meditation journey?
I switched from Headspace to Waking Up. Sam Harris's app goes much deeper into what the "self" is / consciousness etc. That deeper understanding of the theory helped me in terms of motivation and really committing to my practice every day.

I've only been doing it for about 20 days, so no turning points yet. Curious about other responses to this question.

Wonnk13··on Embrace slow productivity
I'm going to add an emoji reaction to this comment so that everyone on Slack sees that I'm online and "working". </troll>

Fake productivity is absolutely why I will never ever work in any other white collar sector other than tech. The "butts in seats" culture of consulting and banking is so outdated and cannot end fast enough imho.

Wonnk13··on What are Nerds daily routine?
I've been using Sam Harris's Waking Up app for about 10 days now and enjoy it much more than Headspace. I love that he includes theory as well as guided meditation.

Another item I just started is Monk Manual. I enjoy the monthly, weekly, and daily formats. TBD if the habit sticks once the novelty of an "analog" diary wares off.

Other than I just try to drink water every hour or so and do some pushups/pullups when I enter/leave my workspace.

Wonnk13··on LastPass says no passwords were compromised following breach scare
There was some speculation over at /r/sysadmins that this was a dump of passwords that came from the compromise five years ago. I have no way to confirm/deny that.

I have MFA enabled with the google auth app- has there been any discussion that accounts with two factor auth are pwned as well?

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What are the best tech books you read in 2021?
This and Database Internals. I'm more of a sales engineer that continues to flirt with moving to engineering full-time. These two books have really opened my eyes to both better system design and implementation details.
Wonnk13··on The Importance of Price Signals
I've seen this domain submitted in the last year or so. Who or what is Lynalden? Are they an economist, or a blogger, or both?

Not that credentials are the be all end all, but what's different about this person vs anyone who's posting at SeekingAlpha, or any of the investing sub reddits?

Wonnk13··on A 1,300 sq/ft house in Sunnyvale, Calif. has sold for $823,000 over asking
It's like Chicago doesn't exist in the collective conscientious of the east and west coast white collar class. ILL is a dumpster fire of a state, but the COL to quality of life ratio is pretty excellent as far I'm concerned.

Minneapolis, Madison, Milwaukee, Detroit are all fun cities too. I say this as someone who went to college in Boston/NYC and lived all over the Acela corridor and London.

Wonnk13··on Why Not Rust? (2020)
I just replied to your other comment further up thread, but yes this is my anecdotal experience as well. You couldn't walk ten feet without tripping over C++ and Java. Never myself saw Go checked into corp.
Wonnk13··on Why Not Rust? (2020)
Welcome to the Xoogler club :D. Just curious what areas did you work in, generally speaking? I never saw a line of Go in close to three years working around the Ads products.

Obviously it's a massive company and I saw maybe 5% of it, but I joke with my friends that I had to leave goog to get real exposure to Go and borg/k8s.

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
Whoa. timeout. If I'm reading your post correctly your manager gave you a NI as a noogler (first review cycle)?! WTF. Do NIs make it harder to transfer? sure, but it's not impossible.
Wonnk13··on DARPA has caught a Gremlin drone in midair
in the for-fun / i'm such a shitty person i can't believe i hacked this together sense :)

the rest is... classified. but quite boring.

Wonnk13··on DARPA has caught a Gremlin drone in midair
great point- I think it's strongly correlated to budget. JSOC? probably 10 years ahead due to unlimited/black budget.

The average gs-13 commuting to the Pentagon? Bottom of the barrel tech.

Wonnk13··on DARPA has caught a Gremlin drone in midair
If this is in Defensenews just imagine all the shenanigans out at Dugway that are still classified... probably five years ahead of this.
Wonnk13··on TimescaleDB vs ClickHouse
Perhaps I'm wrong, but "timeseries" databases are typically some combination of LSM style append only logs and eventual consistency. In an ACID relational database, i'm not sure you can simultaneously write and read millions of rows per second? If you can I'd love to learn something new :)
Wonnk13··on Google's infamous internal 2010 “I just want to serve 5TB” video now public
One of the few things I miss about my time there...

Never did get Java readability :(

Wonnk13··on Timescale Announces New Database Cloud
Influxdb was doing a project in Rust/Arrow as well right?

I think the lesson might be- be careful who and when you take funding from. All these managed services smack of VCs looking for ARR growth and a big exit...

Wonnk13··on Secret military aircraft possibly exposed on TikTok
Maybe on base is different. I've never ever been allowed to take my phone into a SCIF.

I'm curious how "secret" this aircraft is if any random base personnel can snap a pic in open air.

Wonnk13··on Google to Buy New York City Office Building for $2.1B
I think this is Ruth shifting cost structures moreso than any indication about in office work culture. I believe they were already renting, so someone probably did the math and realized they'd come out ahead in the medium to long term. Google isn't leaving NYC anytime soon.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Do you still miss your RIM BlackBerry?
I think you're spot on about the keyboard being rubbish, but overall bbm was great.

Everytime I upgrade my iPhone I find myself removing more and more apps. At this point all I really want/need is google maps, iMessages and... yaknow a phone. idgaf about anything else.

Wonnk13··on In goodbye message, Chaillan unloads over DoD’s technology culture, processes
> Living in Maryland, I've met several young people who put in a few years at the agency (including TAO) who then left for industry. Millenials don't care about a government pension, especially when you're in a windowless SCIF hacking Perl.

> The US Government as a whole has a massive talent retention problem. Only the mediocre will stay at NSA / CIA now and we'll probably see more of these leaks / hacks.

That's a verbatim comment I made on this site back in 2017 and it's still relevant. I don't mean to toot my own horn as much as to highlight the braindrain out of DoD / the alphabet soup agencies and into other sectors. It HAS and WILL CONTINUE to bite the United States in the ass.

Wonnk13··on Sacklers granted lifetime legal immunity in opioid settlement
Man if you're Andy Fastow or Jeff Skilling you must be kicking yourself right now. Post 9/11 I can't think of many white collar criminals actually doing jail time. I guess we'll see where Holmes ends up.

This whole thing is just so infuriating. I feel powerless to affect change against an entire system that increasingly feels like it was designed to protect families like the Sacklers.

Sorry for a political rant on HN...

Wonnk13··on EmacsConf 2021 Call for Proposals
100% this. I learned Emacs in college for LaTeX and R (pre RStudio). I used it off and on for years after college to be a contrarian if I'm being honest.

With LSP and the various client implementations I'm legitimately more productive in Emacs writing Python, Go, or Rust than whatever flavor of the month IDE thingamajig. Magit and Org are the cherry on top of the sundae.

That said I don't push my beliefs on anyone in my team and I try to learn JetBrains products to make pair programming easier for folks that don't use Emacs.

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What are highly paid areas in CS/Software Development
Those pay well if you're in a front office position and coding algorithms that are directly affecting trading strategies and making the firm money.

If you're doing back office work / stuff that just keeps the lights on you won't be paid any better than any other random dev job.

Wonnk13··on ToyDB: Distributed SQL Database in Rust
Wow - I just started my Rust journey this weekend. Any good projects that are even simpler than this to learn. maybe a basic k/v store?
Wonnk13··on My app just got removed with no prior warning
Does anyone have advice on how to safely "decouple" your personal @gmail.com account from your Android and GCP developer account?

I'd like to delete my GCP and Android developer account, but I'm worried the process will inadvertently delete my personal gmail as well.

Shame on me for using it to login in to these types of accounts in the first place :(

Wonnk13··on Thinking in Events: From Databases to Distributed Collaboration Software [video]
His lectures are also on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEAMfLPZZhE&list=PLeKd45zvjc...

I've been trying to watch snippets while also watching the MIT 6.824 lectures as well.

Wonnk13··on C++ Is the New Python
+1 Lospinoso is the real deal
Wonnk13··on Apache Heron: A realtime, distributed, fault-tolerant stream processing engine
sometimes I poke fun at the front-end folks and all the new frameworks they're constantly chasing.

Lately it's been starting to feel the same for distributed systems. How many streaming engines are there now under Apache? Four?

Wonnk13··on Plants that change our consciousness
Tim Ferris's recent interview of Pollan is excellent, definitely check it out: https://tim.blog/podcast/

I think I might finally have the motivation to read his earlier book How to Change Your Mind
