White_Wolf··on BBC resurrects shortwave broadcasts as Russia blocks news of Ukraine invasion
It's not exactly true that Russia was the cause of it. At least not fully. I'd share the blame between US, EU and Russia, equally.

Worth watching this for a background of how the whole thing started. The guy was pretty on point with it, and it checks out from other sources too.

White_Wolf··on What’s the hottest the Earth’s ever been?
Quality of life is one thing but what happens with the bottom 20%-30% earners? Would they be able to afford living after a sudden change like this? Everyone pushed for a change but I've never seen one(so far) that talk about those that can barely survive as it is.
White_Wolf··on German gov plans software company's liability for damages caused by vulns
I'm not so sure about that. Most likely, there will be a burden of proof on whoever makes a claim of this type. Just think about how many various lib's are involved in one application. If the problem lies in one of the libs, they'll hunt down whoever made it.

I have mixed feelings about a law like this but I can't say I don't agree with something like this as a principle for paid software. Maybe liability will reduce the number of backdoors in software that we pay for. As for FOSS projects on github and such, there is no contractual obigation of any kind as long as you don't see lic's or stuff like that. That being said... I've heard some horror stories that defy common sense so wouldn't be surprised by anything.

White_Wolf··on One more small step toward the right to software repair
You made me wonder if sharing a patcher that modifies the program files would be legal under the EU law.
White_Wolf··on New York City will make it mandatory for companies to post salaries on job ads
I did express my self poorly there. By "Sometimes they have no choice but compromise to pay their bills" I mean:

Some people will take a low paid job or crazy hours to stall for time until they finish a course or to save money for one. I did that back in the day too. That is why, at least some, I can't blame.

You are right on the second part though. Some people don't want or can't be bothered to try... and some or just tired of it. Either of these categories I don't defend in any way.

White_Wolf··on The burden of an Open Source maintainer
A social contract takes place when everyone contributes. If one does the work and others do the demands... it's not a "collaboration", which is a pre-requisite for a social contract.

You could argue there is a social contract between the repo maintainer and various submitters. Not so much between the repo owner and users/consumers.

White_Wolf··on The burden of an Open Source maintainer
I'm not sure about others but when I publish a piece of software or script it's because I needed it for something and I'm done working on it for my needs. If someone has different needs than mine they can DIY or pay someone to do it.

If anyone else needs it, they are free to copy and use it. If they find a problem that I think needs fixing or my stuff will cause me problems, I'll fix it. Otherwise, they are free to fix it and(if kind enough) submit it.

I have 0 obligation to fix anything that I don't personally need and anyone that copies it has 0 obligation to give me anything in return. I only published it to save someone else the time for the bulk of the work. I'm not doing it for money or cred. I do it because it's something I already finished(more or less) and it won't cost me anything to share. Anyone elses needs(family and friends exempt) are not my problem unless It's my (paid) job to make them my problem.

White_Wolf··on School closures led to more sleep and better quality of life for adolescents
1AM? you are tough mate. I was in bed by 10PM-10:30 in high school, broken in every sense of the word. If I was lucky I could actually pull off a 11PM but it was rare.
White_Wolf··on New York City will make it mandatory for companies to post salaries on job ads
I do agree that a person should "hunt" a higher reward (money + package) when they can and it's worth the hassle but...

Sometimes they have no choice but compromise to pay their bills.

As a side note: Some do get complacent and don't bother looking anymore, after a while. Stress, fear of rejection, repeated failure being some of the things that bring them down. One needs close to an Iron Will to push ahead.

White_Wolf··on New York City will make it mandatory for companies to post salaries on job ads
I reckon, among other things: ambition, determination, strong character
White_Wolf··on Swiss army restricts use of messenger apps for military purposes
If your budget is in the upper upper 5 digits range, it's trivial.

If a serious attacker is set on getting your stuff, it's just a matter of time and money. It's down to how much the data is worth for the attacker.

>suddenly without rights after being solid contributors to that society, sometimes for decades.

This is a stretch by any measure. I'm an estern european in UK. Once I applied for ILR(Indefinite leave to remain) I can go and come with 0 problems. Not sure what "without rights" you are talking about but brexit doesn't bother me in any way.

We have plenty at work that arrived in uk around 2-3 years ago and they continue their lives without problems, go home for holidays and so on. Some work for us as self-empleyer/contractors. Not even those have any issues.

White_Wolf··on Ask HN: Private Alternatives to Alexa?
Yes. Had them since WHF first started. We have different rules depending on the level of the meeting though.

40-50% of the meetings are low risk and they don't require removal or power off and these devices though.

For medium risk or higher we run random tests during meetings to see if they have google and alexa around. Nothing fancy or anyting. We just have they devices play a song like "Never Gonna Give You Up".

White_Wolf··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
that charging thing... I didn't think about something like that :( christ. It's becoming absurd but you made me realize that there might be other things I missed.
White_Wolf··on Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules
fixed it for you: "US announces funds to support <the right> independent journalism and reporters targeted for their work"
White_Wolf··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
You can, as long as what you are working on was already by management internally. Otherwise... you're right. Would only bring problems if/when someone is set on making your life hard.

Personally I don't use the comp laptop for my own stuff. I remote into my machine/network at home from my personal phone. DP over usb-c works wonders with a BT keyboard.

As a side note: I don't publish anything. My wife on the other hand does. It's been like that for over 10 years now.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I ended up doing this after a previous employer wanted to grab a load of VBA modules. Big pain the back side. My luck was that my wife actually did work with me on them. Saved my back side big time.

White_Wolf··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
tbh I wouldn't mind the peed limit being higher but introduce some sort of driving lic and exam for it with periodic re-testing. Also re-testing should be mandatory for car drivers too. Both theory, practical, reflex testing.

I ride a bicycle, bike and drive a car and the ammount of crazies on all sides leaves me speachless sometimes. I see cyclist cutting off cars and shooting into a roundabout just because cars will avoid them. I actually had a crash becasue of a retard like this and I chased him until I caught him. Took him to court and won.

On the other side of the coin - I see cars taking turns without checking their mirrors, overtaking while in a queue without making sure no cyclists are passing by. Smashed a bike to bits because of 1 twat. His insurance paid for the bike and treatment.

P.S. I'm not a perfect driver but people these days lack consideration and defensive driving(even the notion of it is foreign now)

White_Wolf··on Six Palestinian organizations hacked with NSO Group’s Pegasus Spyware
Here's some research(2018) on the topic that involved a lot of countries. While this place is pretty tame is comparison with others, I wouldn't be suprised if that would actually be true. https://demtech.oii.ox.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/93/201...
White_Wolf··on Six Palestinian organizations hacked with NSO Group’s Pegasus Spyware
Exploting bugs to gain unauthorized access is a crime regardless of who does it. If the crime happened on EU grounds they have to asnwer to EU. That particular company should have trading sactions imposed on it just like the country it belongs to. We do the same for Russian hackers so it's only fair to apply that to everyone else.

EU is the modern equivalent of Soviet Union and it behaves like that. They do a ton of stuff wrong and they take decisions without any regard for the local culture and people. This has nothing to do with illegal access to other peoples devices.

White_Wolf··on Decline in effectiveness of all three US Covid-19 vaccines over time
He does have a point though. Recurrent income is a lot better than 1 sale in any business.

Scientists can have all the good will in the world if they are not allowed to publish by those sponsoring the research or not even given the funds to do the research in the first place.

White_Wolf··on How credit cards make money
I remember going to a restaurant in Belgium-Bruges(in 2015) that had the fees listed at every table. They were charging you the table cost + whatever fees were listed for your card. While I can't remember the fees I do remember that is was enough to make me decide I want to pay cash.

I don't know if it's legal or not to do that but I found it an interesting quirk of the times we're in (and maybe the owner was pissed off).

White_Wolf··on Our self imposed scarcity of nice places
"and leads to increased pricing. " ==> I can see the effects efficient capital allocation and no limits on properties owned had on the price of properties in the past 20 years.

Don't take this the wrong way mate but this is exactly the sort of mentality that led to this situation in the first place.

Keep in mind this comes from someone that owns 8 fully paid off flats (going 9 next year) and a good sized house(enough for a family of 6-7) in the country side with 50HA of arable land+forest. I am not complaining about the current laws or that it bothered me in any way. I'm saying that current laws+ speculation are keeping youngsters away from owning a property in a reasonable ammount of time. The way I see it, they live with a chain around their neck for 1 lousy house with cardboard walls.

"The market pays investors" ---> Stakeholders pay investors for sucessful speculation(in other words - investment)

White_Wolf··on Our self imposed scarcity of nice places
The role of investors in the economy is ultimately to finance new development. ===> False. The role of investors is to make money.

If you build more, rents will go down. ===> In theory True. In practice self builds lower the pricing. The barriers set by bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy are the problem and they cause property prices to go up. EDIT: Restrictions set by bureaucracy is what creates artificial scarcity(think diamonds market)

"They provide valuable liquidity to the market" ===> False. It's long term value storage and/or speculation. The same properties would be bought by new families if they were closer to a realistic price. You'd get the same if not more cash movement if it would be affordable. By affordable I mean: A young couple with minimum wage should be able to pay it off in 10-15 years with no problems. Not in 35-50.

As a sidenote(IMHO): Ideally, property ownership should be limited to 1/+18 year old to prevent/reduce speculations. Maybe 2 if we're talking about adding a holiday home(yeah. I know it's a strech). Companies should not be alowed to own residential properties unless they are a developer. In that case, they can own the newly developed properties for up to ?5? years.

White_Wolf··on Man left shocked as his house is 'stolen'
mate.. it's a matter of perspective. for people that have nothing left... prison doesn't sound that bad. If I have to choose between ending up on the streets again or prison... I'm pretty sure I'd chose prison this time around. I was young and lucky the first time. Now...
White_Wolf··on Man left shocked as his house is 'stolen'
I second that. If I'd end up losing my house to something like this... Let's just say nobody would get it by the end of it.
White_Wolf··on Trolls will be jailed for ‘psychological harm’
I'm happy i'm too old for this s*t.

White_Wolf··on Universal Android Debloater
excuse the pun but it's not practical to support some devices if the manufacturer keeps placing road blocks. THeya re simply not worth the effort when there are so many great options that make it easy to unlock and flash. Some even give you unbrick tools in case you kill the bootloader.

If you want a devices that can be easily customized, just buy one of the ones that have the OEM unlock option in the dev menu. For power users, those are the only ones worth buying and supporting.

Vote with your wallet.
