WhiteOwlLion··on Show HN: Search code in GitHub repos using regular expressions
How about the ability to search code on forks? GitLab allows it. At least have feature parity? Thanks.
WhiteOwlLion··on New AMD EPYC-based Compute Engine family, now in beta
The pings times may not be as good to France (or Europe in general), but the bandwidth provisions are much more generous than the USA. They have peering agreements with other ISPs, so hopefully a lot of the transit of that bandwidth ends up being "free" to them. Even on a 100Mbps line, I was able to push 30TB a month, so it is possible if you there is enough demand for the data.

Most likely 10Gbps shared pipe.

Euros is not the same as US Dollar

WhiteOwlLion··on What is the best way to accept payments in Latin America countries?
PayPal is the more mature product and is accepted in more countries. You can opt to keep funds in the native currency, or perform the cross border conversion when the payment is received.

Stripe is supported in fewer countries.

It really depends on what you realistically need.

You also need to be aware of how refunds work. Also be aware of fraud and chargebacks. You lose a lot of visibility using a third-party service with fraud detection so you either rely on their tools or rely on the 3rd party to perform the due diligence for you.

Fees are also higher to accept globally, so you need to factor that into your pricing.

WhiteOwlLion··on Ask HN: What are some interesting projects to reuse your old devices?
I have about 30 Android smartphones I am using for volunteer distributed computing (BOINC). Most are running Android 4.x
WhiteOwlLion··on Store the proof of a webpage saved with SingleFile in Bitcoin
You could use Bitcoin SV to store the actual file on the blockchain, but SingleFile creates an enormous HTML file. So, you're better off printing the page as a PDF, encode in the blockchain, and only spend 10% of what you would have spent (250kb SingleFile vs 25kb PDF).
WhiteOwlLion··on VS Code Issue Tracker Meltdown
This was actually taken seriously. How many Christians have actually died for Christmas as well? Have a fuckin' spine Microsoft.

WhiteOwlLion··on Launch HN: Got-it (YC W19) – Bluetooth labels for tracking things at work
Do you have to re-apply the labels each year? If the battery dies, this wouldn't scale well for the labor involved to replace the labels each year?
WhiteOwlLion··on Show HN: I made a minimalist tool to automate approval workflow via Google Forms
I was looking at HelloSign too. I volunteer with a non-profit that has forms for adopting orphans abroad. The amount of paperwork is insane. Being able to leverage same data points (date, name, address, etc) and apply it to multiple forms is a good idea. HR would benefit too. New hire paper work. In 2019, you'd think this would be all online and digital, but there's still paper involved for regulatory/legal reasons or because the old dinosaurs will not retire yet.

WhiteOwlLion··on No-one understood our idea, but now it's worth over $1bn
Filemaker had a real opportunity to become an easy to use web based database SaaS but they just couldn't make the transition to web in a meaningful way I feel. I know so many casual business users misuse spreadsheets (Excel, Sheets, or even LibreOffice) as a database, there's a need for row integrity that Airtable fills nicely.

We had a fundraiser using Airtable Pivot function to record and display lap times, completed laps, and average lap time in real time on site and on the web. Who needs IBM, when you have Airtable?

WhiteOwlLion··on Ask HN: Unsuccessful one-person online businesses?
I ran a online ecommerce shop selling electronics. It ultimately failed because I couldn't scale up. You need buy with cash directly from China and order at least a container at a time. If you can't do that, then you're relegated to drop shipping or working with "wholesalers". The margins are too thin to have middle men.

Got offered a stable job after marriage and reprioritized my marriage over a failing dream of running my own business. I apply many lessons I learned from running my own business every day so it is a valuable experience. I encourage anyone to take a leap when you're young and without commitments.

WhiteOwlLion··on Ghost 3.0
Ghost used to be available on Softaculous but the requirements changed: https://www.softaculous.com/news/scripts/ghost-support-to-be...

That's likely one of the biggest reasons you can't get a shared host to run this.

WordPress is still installable via Softaculous.

WhiteOwlLion··on Ask HN: Isn't GBoard basically a key logger?
They've stated GBoard is local only and predictive suggestions are generated from usage history within the device itself.

https://www.macworld.com/article/3070767/googles-gboard-does...

Obviously GIF suggestion and G searches from GBoard is not private.

WhiteOwlLion··on Bank of America's CEO says it's saved $2B per year by building its own cloud
If you already have IT staff in-house it ends up being a duplication of roles and an added layer of complexity. I get some servers and/or resources can benefit from autoscale. USGS gets slammed after a major earthquake so having autoscale capability is important. Or you want to co-locate some servers (payroll) for disaster recovery purposes. There are some legitimate uses cases, but often cloud just feels like renting servers that you could own and manage in-house.

WhiteOwlLion··on Show HN: GetGit, a simple Gitea hosting service
"Create as many users, organizations, and repos as you want."

Sounds like unlimited to me. What happens when someone actually creates 100k repos and stuffs them with 5GB each?

WhiteOwlLion··on Discovered How to Check If Your Reddit Post Was Removed

There are services that track deleted comments.

WhiteOwlLion··on What3words: 'Life-saving app' divides opinion
I don't appreciate English words being used as a standard. How many people around the world do not speak English as their native tongue? It is just another form Western digital imperialism. I'm getting behind Plus Codes (https://plus.codes/) instead.
WhiteOwlLion··on Pain Points of Web Development with WordPress
If GitHub Wiki could get image pasting like issues, or GitLab Wiki could make it your own domain name, something simple like the wiki could be really useful for non-techy crowd that wants a simple web presence where they can insert/update/delete content.
