WhisperingShiba··on Ask HN: What's something you changed your mind about this year?
Related: Technology can save us.

Nope. Only we can save us from ourselves. Technology is a non-specific amplifier of the energies and values of humans.

WhisperingShiba··on What job hunting has been like as a 2020 graduate so far
I graduated 2020 and its been rough. I've just been programming and working stupid jobs. Lots of free time for creative projects, and I feel like an open source software God, so I won't say there is no upside to graduating 2020.
WhisperingShiba··on Cryptocurrency 'rug pulls' cheated investors out of $8bn in 2021
I hope this reaches mass internet consciousness, and people start consolidating their time and effort into projects that won't make them 1000x, but will bring society more efficiency and durability, instead of wasting times memeing shit coins in and out of existence.

Also, data like this gives educators a good opportunity to discuss the importance of trading volume and float. I keep having a hard time getting this concept into people's heads, the price of the stock doesn't matter at all if the float and volume are tiny.

WhisperingShiba··on I found that college fails to live up to being “The Great Equalizer”
I for one, will never kiss the corporate ring
WhisperingShiba··on Dodge Is Cancelling the Hemi V8
I was just salty I got down voted or 'Flagged' or whatever. I completely believe the turbo's higher combustion efficiency means higher temp downstream of the >Turbine<

Was I pedantic? Yes. Still salty though.

WhisperingShiba··on Dodge Is Cancelling the Hemi V8
'hot' vs 'hotter'. Unless I'm fundamentally misunderstanding physics, when flowing gasses do work, they decrease in temperature. They might increase in velocity, but they decrease in temperature.
WhisperingShiba··on Dodge Is Cancelling the Hemi V8
I tend to agree, but not acknowledging how others feel is a one way ticket to no progress. We have a human problem caused by fear, in my evaluation. The solution isn't fear, its something closer to "tricking fearful people into embracing a future that benefits everyone instead of holding onto fear". As opposed to "Changing peoples fear from war and scarcity to climate change and scarcity".

You feel me?

WhisperingShiba··on Dodge Is Cancelling the Hemi V8
I acknowledged that this could still be true in my comment, but that I would have to actually do some analysis. However, what the parent comment said is wrong. Your gas is going to lose internal energy to shaft work as it moves through the turbine, which then compresses the inlet air.

Not saying its not hot or hotter, I'm saying the air is not moving through a compressor (which /would/ heat the gas as it does work on the gas to move it to higher pressure), it moving through a turbine, which is recapturing the internal energy of the exhaust gas to improve the efficiency of the engine.

Because this site always needs ""SOURCES"" https://www.theturboforums.com/info/article/why-are-exhaust-...

>EGTs are usually measured close to the head. This provides a much quicker response time as well as a more accurate reading. In fact, the temperature of the exhaust gas following the turbocharger can be as much as 200 to 300 degrees lower than the temperature upstream of the turbo. Air resistance caused by the turbo itself can also cause increases in the temperature upstream that would not be detected past the turbo.

WhisperingShiba··on Dodge Is Cancelling the Hemi V8
Exhaust gas runs through a turbine, hence 'Turbo'. Typically this cools exhaust. Whether or not the higher combustion temperature from the compressed inlet gas makes up for this is not known to me.

To be fair, we know it will be a problem, but we don't know if will actually be a big problem or a small problem. Will we have mass migrations? Total environmental collapse? Deserts everywhere? Or will something bigger than climate change roll around to wipe out civilization, like a mass psychosis or WW3?
WhisperingShiba··on Microsoft employees are sharing their salaries to push for more fairness
I imagined something completely different from 'sharing their salaries'
WhisperingShiba··on Why U.S. Infrastructure Costs So Much
So how do we go back? If our problem is human nature, perhaps we just have to survive long enough, and the human organism will self-correct.

I want to overtake small cities and make an escape rout for people who feel trapped in society, like me. The problem is that you need money in order to make jobs in those cities. Basically we are just stuck waiting for culture to change again.

WhisperingShiba··on Why U.S. Infrastructure Costs So Much
Uh oh things are not looking good for our fair nation.

Fortunately it seems like China isnt doing the best either, but in other ways. Hopefully we fall together.

WhisperingShiba··on The $11B Webb telescope aims to probe the early universe
I thought about this a lot while I was designing my own amateur liquid rocket. You would almost certainly save a lot of money across all launch programs from the payload, just by spending the effort upfront to qualify a new heavy lift system like a Saturn-VI or Starship.

I think its just such a difficult thing to justify huge upfront costs to congress, especially if you see how long it has taken SLS to get anywhere. IMO, ULA, Boeing (solo) and Northrop's cultures couldn't possibly cut it for developing another amazing vehicle at any appreciable speed without the Euphoria and meaning that the Space Race provided.

WhisperingShiba··on A few things I’ve come to believe in my years in music tech
nice.
WhisperingShiba··on A few things I’ve come to believe in my years in music tech
Who is going to host the actual content? This seems like a missed opportunity to create a decentralized music hosting platform, where artists get paid in proportion to bandwidth used. Something like file coin.
WhisperingShiba··on Ask HN: What are these low quality “code snippet” sites?
So why was google more effective before? Is this is product of the financial struggle of our society, or do you believe it is an inevitable consequence of a dominant search engine?
WhisperingShiba··on Ask HN: What are these low quality “code snippet” sites?
It does give me pause, but do you really think there is no way to have both open algorithm and good results? What is users assessed sites as they used a search engine, and then this was broadcast back to the engine?

I have a feeling there is a way to introduce randomness to this search engine in a way that smooths out the game theoretic arms race of gaming an algorithm. This goes against our natural urge to have a fully deterministic algorithm which always brings the most pertinent sites right at the top. However, because humans are trying to bring order to things for their own benefit, throwing in chaos could prevent people from even trying to game the algorithm

WhisperingShiba··on Life as We Made It by Beth Shapiro asks: is “natural” always best?
A lot of my comfort with the old way of growing crops comes from the time it took to grow the crop, and see it change slowly over time. The other part of it was that these new human prompted crops were open for people to use, and once you got the grain from the farmer, nothing stops you from planting it yourself.

Also, when we discuss food scarcity, why do we insist that technology will save us? It wont, the food scarcity problem is an socio-architectural and political problem more than a technological problem.

WhisperingShiba··on The Weirdness of Government Variation in Covid-19 Responses
You still trust what the Chinese Government says?
WhisperingShiba··on The Weirdness of Government Variation in Covid-19 Responses
Thank you for giving the reduction to absurdity, for the above line of argument.
WhisperingShiba··on Plunge in lithium-ion battery costs
From what you know off the cuff, do LFP or LTO batteries have advantages in number of cycles or discharge depth? Both of those being even marginally higher would make them superior for home batteries, since the power density wouldn't matter nearly as much.

E: Wikipedia says low cost, less rare earth metals and longer lifetime. Sounds like a big technology.

WhisperingShiba··on Space debris forces astronauts on space station to take shelter in return ships
I like the energy you are trying to give off, but mentally disabled people don't typically have anti-satellite ballistics. Its a shame that most disabled people are considered scary. I worked with autistic children as as school requirement some years back. In many ways, they are not nearly as scary as intelligent people, but there was still cause for concern if they picked up a sharp knife, just from the unpredictability.

Regardless, this case with Russia is like your very technologically advanced friend who is destroying your art project with his reckless movement of his project around the shop. Its not cool, because if you have the ability to build a hyper-ballistic missile, you have the ability to predict the debris scatter.

WhisperingShiba··on Ask HN: Do you think planned obsolescence still exists?
Did you remove your post on

Or were you removed? I think you are onto something, low key. But it maybe suggesting foul play is grounds for removal on this site now.

WhisperingShiba··on Is there such a thing as good taste?
Upper Middles selling Upper Middles and Middles fake status symbols, but really elevating the esteem of a singular Upper Middle, and making themselves stand out as fake Upper Middle class.

Fascinating meta gameplay here.

WhisperingShiba··on Ask HN: Messed up my education, now 30 and regretting it. What to do?
I did great in university, learned a lot, did projects, and the cool jobs still feel so far away. I think the best course of action is to just do what you love and find a way to get paid for it later. That's my strategy. I eat beans, grains and vegetables, live frugally and iterate slowly towards a future I would want to live in.

I think if your problem is that you don't like your day-to-day but your pay is ok, the best way out isn't through university. I think its by dedicating yourself to passion projects through great effort in your free time.

WhisperingShiba··on Members of Congress Violate Insider Trading and Conflict of Interest Law
I keep beating this drum; The consequences for not accumulating wealth at every moment feels too high. This society is horribly sick with a case of prisoner's dilemma.
WhisperingShiba··on Glass is the hidden gem in a carbon-neutral future
The company who is able to get away with making the cheapest bottles which breaks the most, still benefits from other companies which are contributing to a recycled glass availability pool.

The incentives are such that companies are trying to make the crappiest, least recycled bottle from virgin material, since there is no guarantee they will get a bottle they manufactured, back at the plant.

WhisperingShiba··on Open-source automated insulin delivery system given approval by team of experts
Its not at all misleading, you just have a strict view of what it means to give approval.
WhisperingShiba··on Glass is the hidden gem in a carbon-neutral future
Just make the bottles stronger. I understand there will be some game theoretic problems with that though, which seems to be a big problem right now...
