Roast

Spends so much time talking about EV charging that they probably have range anxiety while walking Claims to be security-focused but probably still uses 'password123' for their coffee machine So Swiss they probably organize their HN bookmarks with the precision of a Geneva watch

WelcomeShorty··on Was everyone stupid back then?
So very true. It is _us_ who changed and choose for the easy web experience. The cool, hard / exclusive part is still around.
WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: Have you stopped reading most news?
Gone dark for 25 years when I started to feel exhausted with a more than full time job, a beautiful wife and multiple small (<5yo) kids.

My doctor, and old horse, refused to give me beta blockers or other pills. Instead he said "Stop reading newspapers (yes, that was thing then) and drinking coffee. Come back in a couple months."

I did and boy, did it change my life for the better!

WelcomeShorty··on Noise cameras to be trialled in England to tackle ‘boy racers’
Depends on where you live I guess.

Trains, airplanes, helicopters & neighbours are my top 4.

WelcomeShorty··on Noise cameras to be trialled in England to tackle ‘boy racers’
You are talking about me, a 55 yo who got a pair of EarPods Pro from my kids only recently and man... the quality of life improvement is incomparable with anything I have ever experienced.

I have tried suppressing sound with more sound over the years but that is not even 20% as efficient (for me). Now may recipe for relaxation is EarPods in, Noice canceling on, a song on repeat and Bob's your uncle! Better than retalin even.

WelcomeShorty··on WiGLE: Wireless Network Mapping
Upload it to Wigle and flaunt your ranking to other war drivers :)

And demos. Get an audience, setup a PI with Kismet, show the audience their phones are permanently broadcasting ALL the SSIDs their phones have ever connected to, enjoy the stunned faces.

Pick one phone's list of SSIDs (make sure you agreed with the "victim" that this is ok) and map the list of SSIDs with Wigle to locations.

WelcomeShorty··on WiGLE: Wireless Network Mapping
What I do is get a couple of Androids (preferably different versions, not even necessary different vendors. The difference / efficiency in WiFi & GPS implementations are enormous.), install Wiggle and off you go.

No messing with GPSD, no tuning, absolutely nothing just supply power and you are ready to rock.

Additional benefit: you also detect cell towers & bluetooth if you wish to do so.

For extra good results, drive... slow... I use a scooter that allows me to comfortably drive 20km/h (15 in Freedoms) with a plastic case on the back with a handful of phones and can easily get about 80 / 90% of the SSIDs.

I VERY seldomly wiggle, am in the 600 - 700 range.

WelcomeShorty··on Hotel safety tips from a former intelligence officer
It happens to me that I wake up and do not know where I am (or why). The personal item helps me instantly knowing that I am on familiar ground.

Happens to many people who travel a lot.

WelcomeShorty··on Switzerland’s Museum of Consumer Electronics
Crypto AG is such a stain on our reputation, it is not even funny. Nor discussed much. The (incredible) limited political fall out is, in my opinion, the worst.

Cover up, delay, cover up, delay, trickle some info, delay more, wait till people have changed roles, pretend there is no records, fail to remember, the list is endless.

WelcomeShorty··on Switzerland’s Museum of Consumer Electronics
Might be since HN feels a little like home: opinions are appreciated but moderation is expected. Source: Swiss myself.
WelcomeShorty··on Hotel safety tips from a former intelligence officer
It is about the same routine I follow. Specifically the "walk the emergency routes" since muscle memory can help you a lot when under stress.

Missing one point: take a couple of business cards from the hotel with you. Whenever you need to get back, it most often makes it easier for people (cab drivers) to get you there without too much discussion and misunderstandings.

Other points: - To be sure you have some clean water in your room, bring a few small water bottles. - Avoid the in house WiFi - Do not order room service - Have a family photo / familiar item on your bed stand, so that if you wake up in a panic, you know you are awake and in "your own room" - Don't invite people into your room - Personally I like to unpack, even it is for a short stay, since it make me feel more comfortable and less "on the run" - Give the cleaning people a decent tip (if they are allowed to accept it) on the first possible occasion and make it clear who you are and what your room number is, and what you expect from them (clean / leave alone etc.) - Use the in hotel services like shoe polishing, tip them well. These people know everything going on - Order cabs via the lobby - If possible, let the lobby pay your taxi when inbound

I do not miss traveling professionally.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: How do you guys pick your usernames?
Thanks for Opgezwolle! New to me, like it already.
WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: How do you guys pick your usernames?
I have 2 methods: When I am an early adaptor, I use my standard (since 30 years) username.

For everything else I pick something that randomly comes to mind. Username here, loosely based on Get Shorty (the movie). I was probably watching that while registering at the time.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: Are you going to quit?
I did not make myself clear. I reacted to your "The worst part is that anyone who wants WFH can have it, but I cannot have what I need."

Which implies you want "me" back in the office to satisfy your social desires and NOT because of improved productivity.

You can have what you need, just not with me / your colleagues. But you seem not to want an alternative solution.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: Are you going to quit?
> I like commuting, I like smalltalk, I like dropping by people's desk to ask a quick question, and I don't mind it when people do the same to me. I like getting to know people, I like going out for lunch with coworkers, I like building relationships with people. I like knowing the identity of those I work with beyond a Slack pfp.

You can not seriously suggest that people who can do (and have done the last 2 years) their job remotely and want to keep doing that, come to the office to satisfy these... desires?

Why not get a job that gives that to you, naturally like a sales person or bartender or something.

WelcomeShorty··on SQLite is not a toy database (2021)
I found the key part of getting your application up to speed is 80% of the time, the query itself. Using stored procedures, bulk insert and the like, have speed up more "slow queries / databases" then anything else I've seen.

Of course, if your coder already knows and does this, your last resort will be moving the DB closer to the app (the last 20% of optimisation).

WelcomeShorty··on PGPP (Pretty Good Phone Privacy) Beta Launch
Since "one of the co-founders of this effort" seems not to grasp the realities of IMSI's & TMSI's and the reliance of network operators (read: billing) on these, I would strongly advice to treat this "solution" as experimental at best.
WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: Where should I move to meet interesting tech people?
Go to multi day conferences about topics you like.

Many people will be there for the subject AND away from home so they are willing to talk your tech AND have time to spend time with you.

Sooner or later you will find the place that suits your needs, cultural, social and technical.

WelcomeShorty··on My favorite iPhone feature was removed, long live its subpar replacement
For me the complete opposite: I LOVE the shuffling with their library.

Pick one song I shazamed and poof, I get to listen to "random" "identical" songs for hours. A gem.

WelcomeShorty··on Mega Millions ticket wins $1.34B lottery jackpot
Neither am I poor, unconnected or uneducated, but I play the lottery once or twice a year since I enjoy the prospect of ridicules "transformative wealth".

So I buy my tickets as long as possible before the draw, get to fantasise about what if and have a couple of weeks of happy, crazy dreams.

To me that is worth the 10 or so bucks, no matter the odds being so badly stack against me, I guess that is so for many people (who are not addicted to gambling).
