Roast

Spends so much time talking about EV charging that they probably have range anxiety while walking Claims to be security-focused but probably still uses 'password123' for their coffee machine So Swiss they probably organize their HN bookmarks with the precision of a Geneva watch

WelcomeShorty··on Tired of Dating Apps, Some Turn to Google Docs
I never got the whole dating app buzz but have found speed dating to be the absolute best way to meet people who want to meet people.

You meet physically, get to hear, see and smell each other, interact face to face and have an easy exit.

No filters, no yester year pictures, no catchy phrases except for those you've mastered.

Met some very nice people for some very fun times (not just sex).

WelcomeShorty··on “The Onion” founder explains his strategy for sparking creativity
> people tend to basically reject the years of hard work and cultivated skills you put in, ascribing it to a natural and magical talent

One of my pet peeves!

"Look at that person doing something amazing. That is talent at its finest!"

No it is not! That took years and years to learn and master.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: What is the most memorable game you played?
Battlefield 2.

Got sucked into organised play with an (very large, > 200 people) international group and spend a solid 4 years doing little else but organising and playing the most epic (6 to 12 hours) sessions.

There I've learned the power of gaming communities and anyone who applies for a job with me and mentions they've lead a bunch of randos online grabs my attention quickly :)

WelcomeShorty··on Car’s tires are swirling donuts of pollution
You are right about the fact EVs still use break pads but in normal circumstances it is absolutely minimal.

Source: I drive an Audi e-tron and see (in the dash) and feel / hear when the normal breaks are used. Only below 10KM/h and with emergency breaking. The scenario battery 100% full is a pipe dream :)

> PCI-DSS is an industrywide joke; it's a checklist audit performed by race-to-the-bottom consultancies

We ended up with a consultants from a former Eastern Europe country that charge less per hour then local cashiers make (which is NOT a statement to the quality of said consultants).

I (irregular) deal with PCI-DSS and never ever felt so close to quit my job and become a full time lawn mower.

WelcomeShorty··on Ban on recording without consent is unconstitutional, US court rules
Jein (German word joke that combines Ja & Nein / Yes & No).

The short answer is: they are allowed BUT. There are many privacy rules that prohibit the actual use of these recordings (not limited to publishing but in court as well).

The assumption of privacy is very strong here.

WelcomeShorty··on My startup crossed $2M/yr and now co-founder is going for a power grab
Oh yes, the power of success.

I am sorry for you this is happening, at the same time: it is to be expected as soon as people start seeing|dreaming a lot of money and a legal loop hole.

I hope there is something in writing about the ownership of your company otherwise you stand a change to get out completely empty handed. The fact your CEO wants to keep his hands clean is a major indication to me.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: What 60 folks can give career and general life advice for 40 folks
Treat your partner well, you got some daunting times ahead of you as a team.

Your children will (need to) leave the house. Prepare and assist them.

Your family home will be oversized, if you can, pass it to one of the kids who needs it most.

Moderate your financial fix costs.

Get your car / bike / sailing / paragliding licence now.

You are still a player in the "looking for a partner" market, go for it now or forget about it completely.

WelcomeShorty··on Everyone Was Wrong About Reverse Osmosis–Until Now
TL;DR

"In a study published in April, Elimelech’s team proved that the once-frustrating assumption about how water moves through a membrane is, indeed, wrong. They replace it with a “solution-friction” theory that water molecules travel in clusters through tiny, transient pores within the polymer, which exert friction on them as they pass through. The physics of that friction matter, because understanding it could help people design membrane materials or structures that make desalination more efficient or better at screening out undesirable chemicals, Elimelech says."

Cool engineering story.

WelcomeShorty··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
YouTube hit me worst: I rented my all time favourite movie "Where eagles dare" and got it voiced over in French...

Never again will I rent / buy anything from YouTube, ever.

Either Netflix has it, or down to pirate bay it is.

> There's this internet phenomenon (common on Reddit and other such forums) where you find high-quality discussions on a variety of topics and everyone seems so clever and informative, until you come across a thread on a topic that you are actually an expert on and find that every top-voted comment is objectively incorrect.

Sounds like the old days to me, where we would meet up , discuss the world and what have you, without any means to fact check anything online.

Changes there was a real expert on the subject in your circle was at best 20% So we just enjoyed / continue our life. No harm done as long as nobody took the discussion as gospel.

It is more a WHY do these things work and the reason is, that the whole "security" part of these networks are build to do one thing:

Make sure the operator of the network knows who to bill for what.

Nothing else. Not to protect your ID or the content of your messages. Just and only to bill correctly.

It is even forbidden for your phone to indicate IF and HOW your session is secured. Just to make sure you are not aware you're being MitMed.

WelcomeShorty··on A compilation of websites with dumb password rules
Swiss bank Cler is guilty of this too, in a way.

At (initial) password change they allow plenty of characters, but it is truncated without notice. After the password change, at login, it does not get truncated and you are not able to login, nor can you change your password ever again (until a password reset via mail (no email) arrives. Fun times.
