WayneDB··on Chomsky praises Snowden and condemns US hypocrisy
Sorry...what does colloidal silver have to do with it?

Did you read the author's bio? He's no slouch - Yale grad, litigator with experience in the Supreme Court, writes for HuffPo...but I guess we should write it off immediately because...colloidal silver? You tell me because I don't know anything about colloidal silver.

WayneDB··on Ask HN: Where do you host your NodeJS applications?
I love those cheap refurbished IBM X servers. I use the tower models as workstations.

He is a great intellectual, but he MAY also be acting as just another control mechanism, a gatekeeper:

(Has the mention of this simple possibility offended you? If you think it's impossible, tell me why.)

Nitpick: Why use a whale as the logo when the tagline says that it's a "lightweight" container system?
WayneDB··on Samsung overtakes Apple as world's most profitable mobile phone maker
You're right that apps are a definite factor in the success of a platform. I think we can both be right here, so +1 yourself buddy :) Without any good apps, I think a more open hardware strategy is worthless - but a more open hardware strategy can translate to lower prices which make up for poor application performance, bugs, etc.

In any case, I hope that everyone can get what they want. For me personally that means: Give me absolute control over what is running on the device.

WayneDB··on Samsung overtakes Apple as world's most profitable mobile phone maker
I think you got it backwards. Windows only obtained the lion's share of apps because Microsoft had the right hardware strategy.

When Apple released their graphical OS, Windows had zero market share. Windows wasn't even a product, but even when it was - people didn't buy it to run DOS apps, they bought it to run Windows apps. It was cheaper and it worked well enough.

That's why Android is comparable to Windows here. It was released later than iOS which already had market share, any hardware vendor can integrate with it, like Windows...and it's more developer friendly, like Windows (compared to the Mac OS). It's also better than good enough, like Windows. And those will be the direct reasons that will eventually let Android overtake iOS as an application platform.

WayneDB··on Samsung overtakes Apple as world's most profitable mobile phone maker
Here's how:

Android = Windows = An OS that runs on many different brands of hardware.

iOS = Mac OS = An OS that runs on exactly one brand of hardware.

Does every facet of the Android/Windows ecosystem have to match for this huge similarity to have major effects on the market? No. How can you deny that this makes a difference? Where would Samsung be without Android?

Not that it matters, but - Google does profit from Android (directly, indirectly - who cares?) by giving support and early access only to those device manufacturers who play ball by installing certain Google apps by default.

WayneDB··on Chinese firm Huawei controls net filter praised by PM
"Crazy" conspiracy theory - China is under the control of the same group that has utter control of the US and the UK and to keep control, they create much of the chaos that we experience.

See: Mao Zedong (Yale graduate) and Every US Ambassador to China is a member of Skull and Bones.

The best way to predict the future is to create it. :)

WayneDB··on Native vs. HTML5: looked at objectively, the debate is over
I guess we'll have to wait and see. It is going to be interesting to see where we are in 10 more years.
WayneDB··on Mono 3.2
So, which platform independent kit do you use where every framework is kept perfectly up to date for every platform?
WayneDB··on Major upgrades to Xamarin’s platform: Async is here
I hate their pricing too and I hope they make their products a little more accessible to the developer who is just starting out in mobile.
WayneDB··on Native vs. HTML5: looked at objectively, the debate is over
I'd like to agree with you, but I don't think HTML5 is going to change anything unless they get rid of the HTML part.

I don't every want to layout my UI by saying "div div div div div div div". I want to say "window menubar toolbar grid treeview datagrid statusbar" and then I want it to show me the native representation of those things.

WayneDB··on Native vs. HTML5: looked at objectively, the debate is over
I will concede that in the current non-ideal environments in which we work and play - there are all sorts of reasons that I don't want to use a native application. For instance - I will never install a social network application even if I belong to the network. I'd rather go to the site in an incognito browser tab.

In my ideal world, I'd prefer a native app for all things. The web sucks in my opinion. Honestly, I wish there were a browser that dealt exclusively in native GUI elements and other computing resources. I'd also want some very finely-grained native resource permission controls.

WayneDB··on Google Launches The Chromecast To Bring Chrome To The Living Room
At my house we have a full Windows 7 PC or laptop attached to every TV and a wireless combo keyboard/trackpad. It's been that way for over 5 years and there's nothing we can't do with them.

We didn't spend much to do this either - these are all old or leftover computers except for the one in my wife's room because she wanted a quad-digital-tuner Windows media center (so I built her a tiny shuttle box with a Ceton tuner).

WayneDB··on Native vs. HTML5: looked at objectively, the debate is over
OK...but for actual applications that perform some specific functions? In other words, not news/article websites pretending to be apps...

Some examples: A voice recorder. A calculator. A camera application. A compass. A drawing program. A photo editor. A program that auto-tunes your voice. Games.

As a matter of fact, even for those non-app websites that offer an app - I find the app usually offers a better experience compared to the site, but like you - I'm not installing a separate app for each one of them.

WayneDB··on Native vs. HTML5: looked at objectively, the debate is over
I didn't even know there was a debate. Doesn't everybody prefer native apps when they can get them?

I think the only people debating this are web developers who don't want to learn anything new.

WayneDB··on Linus is wrong about being a jerk
> No way in hell would I do it for free.

Now you're starting to sound like Linus :)

WayneDB··on The anti-virus age is over
That's right. I was not specific. How then could you have possibly derived that very specific accusation from my own non-specific offering?
WayneDB··on The anti-virus age is over
No. I am not. Read my original post again where I said:

...if you know what you're doing.

Where did I imply anything remotely close to what you just said?

WayneDB··on The anti-virus age is over
And I hate the "I can't imagine how to do this, so it's not possible" argument.

We have syslogs going back 7 years. You want to come audit our network? I'll bet you all of the money in my bank account that you find nothing.

> with the usual suspects--Java, Flash, Adobe Reader, etc...

Nobody in my house runs those.

> It's all about staying on the machine, and staying silent.

They have to communicate over the network at some point though. Otherwise, it'd be useless.

So yeah - as far as I know - and that's pretty damn far.

WayneDB··on NSA Chief: Terrorists Using Leaked Info [video]
Nothing new was even revealed though! There were articles in major publications over 5 years ago about the NSA putting boxes on mirror ports at Internet backbone sites. That's when we started hearing about the CEO of Qwest.
WayneDB··on The anti-virus age is over
I've been running Windows without AV for over 10 years, so it's not even really necessary if you know what you're doing.

The only anti-virus measure that I take is to upload unknown executables to http://www.virustotal.com/

WayneDB··on Making a better, prettier, more functional Windows Command Line
Wow, that's impressive! I just couldn't imagine working that way, so thanks for clarifying.
WayneDB··on Make Crap
I like the idea of single message websites and I've thought about doing one.

My idea was more like "multiple open letters directed to a particular company, about their technology products" but then I thought - eh, first world problems, not worth the effort. Maybe it's just more fun to imagine it.

WayneDB··on Making a better, prettier, more functional Windows Command Line
> Cygwin is my primary means of interfacing with Windows...

Could you explain that a little more? For instance - say you want to browse the web or read email - you're doing it in a Cygwin terminal?

Do you use it as your launcher to launch Windows apps or do you only run text interface applications? Or, do you just do most of your dev/sysadmin work in Cygwin and use normal Windows apps for the rest?

WayneDB··on Making a better, prettier, more functional Windows Command Line
I think a lot more people run Linux as a guest than the other way around.
WayneDB··on Enough with the JavaScript already
He didn't say it's unusable, he said it's a bad tool...and it is. That's why a whole industry was born to work around it by transpiling to it.

It's a bit ridiculous to say that anyone who complains about JS doesn't know it.
