Waterluvian··on Is mathematics over, or just graduating?
Gandhi’s argument seems flawed. It’s arbitrary to decide the needle is a primary need because it requires delineation of need vs. want. If we took a time machine back every 100 years, that delineation would be quite apparently different at each stop. Yesterday’s luxuries are today’s basic human rights. I probably wouldn’t have to use up much of my remaining thorium to find a century that laughs at the idea of a school being a basic human right.

He also seems backwards on the outcomes of things like what you listed. Those things all raised people out of poverty and serfdom.

It’s interesting, though, to see someone as revered as Gandhi having to add epicycles to his beliefs after having seen the other side of it.

Waterluvian··on Example.com just launched the biggest redesign in decades
This feels like a “falsehood developers think about localization.”

It’s always funny when I get French YouTube ads. As if YouTube is desperately trying to offload the adbuys anywhere they can by pretending that Canada must mean French.

Waterluvian··on US closely monitoring case of lab worker who possibly died of plague in Siberia
I see how this could be confusing for you. Note that we're discussing the response to a potential crisis.
Waterluvian··on US closely monitoring case of lab worker who possibly died of plague in Siberia
I suspect it will be similar to the current American regime's past handling of COVID: a lot of skilled people wanting to do the right thing, but having to fight an unnecessary uphill battle against the administration that was more interested in perception, economics, and politics than lives.

Waterluvian··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
That turns the focus to almonds and how insanely bad they are.

I like when a framing offers a bunch of equivalents. Then the reader can be distracted and horrified by a bunch of issues simultaneously.

Waterluvian··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
I remember 15+ years ago having to remove gigabytes of printer drivers from OSX. This was at a time where “drivers” were a whole, horribly frustrating thing and Apple wanted stuff to “just work.”

Lots of opinions for sure, but I’m curious how Apple actually tries to decide the cost-benefit of these kinds of things. Obviously they know they need added disk usage and some people will be upset. Do they have a model to estimate or do they just A/B test and see how it goes?

Waterluvian··on A map of every lighthouse
I like the idea. But it was a bit jarring that panning with my finger took ages and then pinching to zoom insta-faceplanted me into the Labrador interior.

If anyone wants to mount a rescue, I’m somewhere near a lighthouse.

Waterluvian··on The work by Valve's Timur Kristóf on improving old AMD GPUs on Linux
Maybe there’s a prestige angle to somewhat shame them into keeping up with nvidia. Though my sense is that they’re barely peers anymore in this space. :(

Is there financial incentive for them to bother?
Waterluvian··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
Is there a whole thing in the U.S. where it’s a no no with regards to cell data without a warrant? This feels like that.

(bear with me, this all comes from random podcasting over the past decade)

Waterluvian··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
I’m no American but isn’t it a 4th Amendment issue, and the problem is how the various local, state, federal governments are using a private contractor (Flock) to do an end run around this by pretending that it’s no different from any private citizen recording another in a public space?
Waterluvian··on Getting the most out of Opus 5.5 in Claude and Claude Code
Every time weird stuff happened this week it was because the model choice in VSCode got set back to “auto” and some other model was trying its best. 5.5 is what I just set it to. Even Fable feels worse for my use cases.

Waterluvian··on GitHub's new dashboard experience now the default
There’s an inbox view in github that shows me all the PRs I have to care about. It’s amazing.

Except I discovered that it just doesn’t include things sometimes. Items that show up in the “this month” filter disappear in the “last 3 months” filter for example.

This is one of those things where if it only works 98% of the time, it’s next to useless. I can’t just pretend a few PRs each week don’t exist.

Waterluvian··on cp: -r or -R?
As in the Pokémon, not the Philippines telecom company.
Waterluvian··on Using Opus 5.5 to discover a new eyewitness record of the dodo
This analogy may be too close to the real thing to work, but it reminds me of a Chinese room type situation where its entire understanding of the world is through messages of text.

You say that’s an error a human couldn’t do, but imagine if the human has never seen or touched the kind of item you were making and relied entirely on text descriptions to build its ontology. Off by 90 seems like such a believable mistake.

Waterluvian··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
I think what makes this resemble a moronic idea is it’s a thin veneer of an invention based on your personal stereotyped perspective.

The real challenge, if you wanted to work on the meat of the issue, is that we need to reduce crime without catching the innocent in the net, without having a chilling effect on legal behaviour and people’s rights, and without normalizing the mindset that we should just precrime people.

One of the core points of Minority Report is in the film’s title: that even if technology becomes 99.99% accurate, we are still damned by the destruction of due process and the presumption of innocence.

I think ideas like yours belong in the incinerator.

Waterluvian··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
They should just round up and imprison all the people who walk in my neighbourhood.

Some would call it discrimination but the majority of people who commit crimes in my area are people who can walk. I rarely see the wheelchair crowd pulling off B&Es.

Oh, or people who wear clothes. Criminals seem to like wearing clothes. Point proven: you never see nudists shoplifting Old Navy.

Waterluvian··on Pirating the Pirates
I’m absolutely obsessed with it. For me it’s driven purely from childhood nostalgia. In particular, Macintosh games. I want, and want others to have that warm excitement of nostalgia when they re-discover something forgotten.
Waterluvian··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
The legal system is meant to be a backstop, not a standard mode of operation. What I despise, and what makes me feel embarassed by proxy, is when the imagined solution involves using the legal system as a deterrent (to either the kids or their parents). I think there's a systemic cultural failure if parents are not emparting proper morals and imposing proper consequences, so much so that we need the law to be involved to protect teacher from harm.
Waterluvian··on SNL Weekend Update: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on A.I.'S Threat to Humanity [video]
Copyright might be part of this; I haven’t thought that through. But this restriction is about whose turf they’re trying to push their product on. SNL has to be pushed through a different distributor in different regions.
