Waraqa··on The Wi-Fi Revolution (2003)
I still remember the shock when my father told me he had connected his laptop to the internet without a cable. I'd heard of wireless networking but didn't know it was a standard feature in laptops at the time and all you need is to find a wifi point.
Waraqa··on Old Stockholm Telephone Tower
Does that mean the quality of the voice calls in that era was better than later systems? Since it's logical to have loss of quality when a weak signal is amplified.
Waraqa··on iPhone 17 chip becomes the fastest single-core CPU in the world on PassMark
This is great news for the entire ARM ecosystem. The fact that ARM is now exceeding the best x86 CPUs marks a historical turning point, and other manufacturers are sure to follow suit.
Waraqa··on A platform-jumping prince – History of Prince of Persia's 1990s Ports

I saved the page as mhtml and it was only 24.4 MB

Waraqa··on Download responsibly
IMHO in the long term this will lead to a closed web where you are required to log-in to view any content.
Waraqa··on How I, a non-developer, read the tutorial you, a developer, wrote for me
It was moved to a new path so you have to create symlinks in both locations to the new path under /usr/lib/newlib1.2/newfile.so otherwise, You can download a script that will make that for you but it will only work if you have all the dependencies for that script installed and their version numbers match the ones that the script owner had when he wrote the script.
Waraqa··on How I, a non-developer, read the tutorial you, a developer, wrote for me
You are right but the fact that it will be harder to distinguish between human written and AI written text means that we will be looking for signs that indicate a human written text and will tend to prefer humanly mistakes over AI perfect tutorial.
Waraqa··on Escapee pregnancy test frogs colonised Wales for 50 years (2019)
It's the only one that's not very good at hiding itself.
Waraqa··on The best YouTube downloaders, and how Google silenced the press
There is an official download option inside the app. If they limit the download speed to the watching time, it won't be useful.
Waraqa··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
>very energy efficient

If your server has a lot of idle time, ARM will always win.

Waraqa··on Elements of C Style (1994)
The page style doesn't look so bad even though it's using very simple HTML elements of the era. Just looking at it reminded me of the early days of HTML.

edit: It uses CSS which was invented in 1996 (according to Wikipedia). That means it was updated at a later date.

Waraqa··on Disposable Code Is Here to Stay, but Durable Code Is What Runs the World
It can only be categorized as durable after careful revision from human experts and extensive testing. This is what the article is about.
Waraqa··on A desktop environment without graphics (tmux-like)
It would be useful if there are a comparison for their resources usage especially for people who need them in constrained resources environments.
Waraqa··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
I wonder why his karma is less than the points of the post. doesn't karma follow the total points of one's posts and comments?
Waraqa··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
Add to this the ability to make it cross-platform executable[1] that has no dependencies to get the perfect file format.

Waraqa··on Oldest recorded transaction
I assume an integer field is sufficient since mostly it's only the year that they know not the exact date.
Waraqa··on Show HN: Writing Arabic in English
Are you referring to the language examples in the article? Could you please give an example of what you mean?
Waraqa··on Atlassian is acquiring The Browser Company
"Arc isn’t just a Chromium fork. It runs on custom infrastructure we call ADK — the Arc Development Kit. Think of it as an internal SDK for building browsers (especially those with imaginative interfaces). That’s our secret sauce. It lets ex-iOS engineers prototype native browser UI quickly, without touching C++."

Waraqa··on 1981 Sony Trinitron KV-3000R: The Most Luxurious Trinitron [video]
Do you wish CRT manufacturing would start again? Let's suppose there is enough market demand for that. What advantages could they bring back that we have since lost?
Waraqa··on The value of hitting the HN front page
This means that there is one more piece of advice: "If your post didn't hit the front page in the first attempt, try again later".
Waraqa··on LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises
They aren't surprising when you are dealing with new knowledge. But when hallucinations occur with something you are familiar with, it will be surprising and might be funny. Remember when AI was asked: how many rocks should I eat per day.
Waraqa··on LLMs tell bad jokes because they avoid surprises
The fact that any surprise used in the wrong place is considered hallucination and a downside for that LLM. I guess a good starting point to improve that is to add an experimental "Surprise Mode" which will try to guess the right kinds of surprises rather than minimizing them and get the feedback from the users. Over time, it will learn what kind of surprises users like so that they will be used in future training datasets.
Waraqa··on Open office is giving you secondhand ADHD
The title is misleading. a slight modification could help such as adding 'Your' at the beginning
Waraqa··on Lessons learned from buying an open source repo
Maybe it's because the project is MIT licensed, which means there is no point in buying it other than acquiring the original repo
Waraqa··on Show HN: SuppScanr – Search supplements, build stacks, check interactions
I just registered to try it. A good thing is that the process is easy and email activation is not required to start using it. When I started writing the supplement name and deleted it to restart again, the whole text field disappeared. I have to refresh the page every time I start writing again. After I entered 3 supplements to check their interaction, no results appeared. When I clicked submit again, I saw the results but I had already lost 2 out of 5 free usages available. This happened, even though the results say that there is no information about the interaction between the supplements I entered.
Waraqa··on Welcome to url.town, population 465
With the rise of these retro-looking websites, I feel it's possible again to start using a browser from the '90s. Someone should make a static-site social media platform for full compatibility.
Waraqa··on HTML-in-Canvas
I just tested this demo and it noticed it doesn't support Arabic text rendering (the letters should be connected) which is a main feature of Harfbuzz
